Freelance Writing Online

Let's face it. 2011 hasn't been the best year for online writers. Google's constant algorithm changes have thrown a few wrenches in the machinery, but that is no excuse to give up.

The secret, of course, is to leverage yourself so that you will succeed despite Google's attempts to clean up its search engine results.

Writing Sites

If you are new to online writing, writing sites - now called "content mills" - are a good place to start. This allows you to get the experience you need writing for different clients and learning to alter your writing style to meet their needs. I'm not going to lie to you - the money isn't great. But, when it comes to leveraging yourself as a writer, money isn't the only consideration. Think of it as building a foundation. It takes a lot of work, but without it you have nothing to stand on.

Blogging

Starting your own blog gives you experience writing to your preferred audience in your own voice. Although it may feel a little weird at first, with continued practice you will soon begin to develop a following of readers. Monetizing your blog with adsense or affiliate links provides you with some income from blogging. Many claim to earn a good income from blogging, but like everything else, it takes a while to buildup the income stream. Don't expect to get rich over night. With patience and commitment you can develop an income stream from your blog.

Quality Work Every Time

Producing quality work every time is key to your success as an online writer. Resist the urge to think that if you aren't getting paid what you think you should that it's okay to produce low quality work. It's not. Once you publish your work online it is connected to you forever. Make sure the work you put out there is your best and is something you can be proud of. Believe me when I tell you that many of us have made the mistake of thinking it didn't matter and have lived to regret it. Learn from the experience of others and strive for quality in every piece you write.

Private Clients

Private clients are by far the best source of earnings from your writing - but they probably won't come knocking on your door any time soon. To find private clients, you'll need to think outside the box and approach them with your work. Look for businesses and websites that need the services you can provide. If you write in a particular niche, seek out organizations that relate to your niche. Have references and sample work ready - links to published work online is fine - but for brick and mortal businesses a portfolio of your work may be a better choice.

Social Networking

Social networking benefits online writers in several ways. It keeps you in touch with other writers, allows you to gain exposure for your work and can even be a source of leads for new writing gigs. Signing up for Twitter, Linked In and Facebook builds your visibility online while connecting you with others who share your interests. Online writing can be a lonely profession as you learn to work in isolation. Building a social network with others who share your concerns can be motivating, too.
