To freelance or not to freelance ... that is the question
Do you long to free yourself from the clutches of the corporate world, to fly free and write for Vanity Fair?
I make my living as a freelance writer (I'm also a personal growth advisor, and I love both of them equally). I've learned a lot on my journey to freedom. Read on and decide if freelancing is right for you!
Why do you want to freelance?
And what to expect ...
For that freedom, you are going to have to provide and pay for all of your own benefits, market yourself regularly and deal with financial unpredictability. You're also going to have to be a self-starter. After all, no one will be making you get up each morning and choose looking for clients over watching Oprah. (And watching Oprah can be pretty enticing some days!) Oh, and don't forget, you're also going to have to do pesky things like accounting and billing.
Still think you want to be a freelance writer? Great! Read on ...
If you do things like the masses, you'll get their results: mediocrity
Be willing to do things differently!
1) Declare it! Don't dabble. Make it your firm intention to be a successful writer. You're either in it 100% or you're out. One of the greatest reasons for my success was that I had no safety net. Hopefully, you'll have some money saved to fall back on during those potential dry spells. But if not, you can do it.
It wasn't until I really declared to myself and to the world that I was a successful writer that everything fell into place for me. I got up one morning, and started living my life as if I already had a full roster of clients; as if I already had that publishing contract.
And you know what? Within six weeks, I was fully supporting myself. That was a year ago, and I've worked every single day since on projects of my choice. (This actually has to do with something called the law of attraction. See my lens www.squidoo.com/Law_of_Attraction_Mentor for more details.)
To attract clients into your freelance world, you're going to have to have total faith in yourself and in the universe that success is on its way. When I first started freelancing, I was way outside my comfort zone. For one thing, I hardly had a portfolio. For another, I'd never been published. One thing I did to convince myself that I was actually a successful writer and journalist was to go up to musicians after concerts, give them my business card, and ask if I could possibly interview them. Do you know what? Nine out of ten would say yes on the spot. This helped me believe that I was a successful journalist.
It's the BELIEF that's key. Once you believe it, you begin to attract what you need to be successful. The saying should go: When you believe it, you'll see it, not the other way around!
I know this may sound strange, but it's true. It's about ENERGY. Most freelancers go broke. So don't do things like most freelance writers. Be willing to try my way ... I am your proof that it works!
Do everything "on purpose"
Essentially, every writing project I consider working on has to fit within that life purpose. Why? Because I am DONE doing work that is meaningless, lacks purpose or I don't enjoy. When I left the corporate world, it was because I was sick and tired of the lack of fulfillment. Why would I be my own boss, yet still take projects that I feel terrible about doing? Don't declare yourself in a certain niche, like most freelancers. Simply develop a purpose, and only take work within that purpose.
See, when you love what you do, you become happy. And when you're happy, through the law of attraction, you attract more things into your life that match that positive energy. Really.
But how can you turn down work, you say? You see, I have a firm belief that the universe is filled with abundance and that there is plenty of work to go around. So that's what life brings me.
Recently, for instance, I released myself from a long-standing client in order to make room in my life for more purposeful work. Without that client's revenue, I can't cover my bills. But you have to MAKE ROOM for abundance. I felt a small amount of fear, but mainly I felt totally confident that life would bring me what I wanted.
Three days later, someone contacted me wanting me to edit her book. I read three sample chapters and asked myself, "Does this fit within my life purpose?" It was a light-hearted chick lit book, so its purpose was to entertain. So, yes, it fits within my purpose. Someone else can now take the project at my old client's office -- someone whose life purpose is to do that work. See? This project is so much more enjoyable!
It's very important that you examine your core beliefs before you embark on freelancing. You can find comprehensive information about this in my free mentoring program. It's at http://www.thequantumcoach.net. Core beliefs drive everything in your life, including your success or failure.
Go into freelancing with this belief: I am a successful freelance writer. My life has unlimited possiblities and the universe has endless abundance. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Over and over and over.
When you believe it, you'll create the freelancing life of your dreams.
