I can hardly believe what's out there nowadays... I love writing/composing on piano - but don't write out the notation very well (I can barely write out the basic notes, just so I don't forget what I've composed). I wish I could hook something up to my piano and just have IT transpose everything I've done (while recording it also of course!) :) Nice list of tools! Thanks! :) Kath

    Hello,

I am trying to find a link to an early Microsoft Music creation software. certainly pre 2006.

I used to use it to write 'theme' music for slide shows - and I've lost it over the years.

Can you suggest how'where I might find it again.

    Thanks you
  • JosephFosco Jul 6, 2011 @ 9:10 pm | delete
    Hello Barrie,

Sorry it took so long to reply. I am not personally familiar with the software you described. I did find a reference to a product Microsoft was trying out. It was called Microsoft Music Producer. Microsoft abandoned this program shortly after making it available. There are still people, not unlike yourself, that still like this program. If you search you can find a download. I do not want to post a link because I do not know if the downloads are clean or are a virus.

Here, however is a website that describes the program.

    http://www.oocities.org/vienna/1153/comp_music/music_producer/index.html

If this is what you are looking for, now you know what it is called.

Again, apologies for the delay in answering - it took me quite awhile to find this information.

    Best wishes.

Hi - what a great site of free software! I'm looking for something along the lines of Cubase with VST instruments that you can use to write music rather than samples....what would you recommend? Thanks!
  • JosephFosco Jun 15, 2011 @ 2:22 pm | delete
Hello, It depends what platform you are working on. For the Mac and Linux Ardour is probably the most popular program. On Windows I would try Kristal. Some of the other packages might not support VST plugins, but they do have other ways of incorporating software synths. I hope this helps. Please email me if you would like more information.
  • tienlove May 18, 2011 @ 3:44 am | delete

What software program would you recommend for a novice that gives you results like jamstudio.com?
  • JosephFosco Jul 10, 2011 @ 1:47 pm | delete
Hello Patrick, Sorry I did not answer this sooner. Still, I'm not certain how to answer this. What are you looking for that JamStudio does not provide. Is it too complicated, if so in what way? Also, what kind of music are you trying to create in terms of style, instrumentation, length etc.... ?Do you have a specific platform in mind - Windows, Mac, Linux, Web?

Perhaps if you can provide a few more details I might have some suggestions.

    Best,
    Joseph

Thanks for gathering all this information for us. I found you in 1st place on a google search for open source music and recording software. That's 1st of 245,000 web pages. Wow!

My husband will have a lot of reading and studying to do. He wants to find out if there is software that produces sounds that really sound like the instruments do. We have a 30 year old electric organ with foot pedals and all that, but no way to transfer that music directly into the computer. Its different switches mimic various instruments, not perfectly, but definitely not like the synthesizers that the rock bands use.

My husband wants to find out if there's any software that produces music that sounds "real" to our "old" ears. Do you know if anything like that exists?

    Thanks again.
  • JosephFosco Jan 27, 2011 @ 9:17 am | delete
    Hello,

Trying to find realistic sounding computer instruments can be a challenge. Look into sampler type instruments. Samples use short recordings (samples) of the actual instrument they are imitating. These often times provide the most realistic sounds.

In the list above you might try the Independence Sampler, E-MU Proteus VX, or the Native Instruments Kore Player. These do not work alone, but work in conjunction with another program such as a sequencer or something like VST Host to "play" these instruments.

Let me know if you have any further questions - it can seem quite complex to getting started with this.

    Best,
    Joseph

Thank you for this lens. I've been looking for a way to record my stuff, without having to use YouTube as my only source. I've used Audacity in the past, been looking for something new. So this is the perfect list for me!
