The very beginning

Originally created by Pop Cap Games, a company created in the year 2000, free online Bejeweled Blitz first started out as a game called Diamond Mine. However, there was already a game that was available to the public by the name of Diamond Mines, so Pop Cap's partner, Microsoft Zone, suggested the name Bejeweled.
Bejeweled began to be hosted on other platforms such as Windows and Xbox where it was called Bejeweled Deluxe.
Bejeweled became one of the very first games that was available for downloading from the iTunes Store for the iPod in early September of 2006.

Gaining interest

In 2004, Pop Cap released the little known sequel to Bejeweled calling it Bejeweled 2.
A year later, in early October of 2007, Pop Cap released Bejeweled 2 for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 2 game consoles.

A year after that, a very popular web page called WoW Insider, a fan page for World of Warcraft players, shared with the world that Pop Cap would be offering a free version of Bejeweled 2 as an extra feature for WoW's interface available for download. With World of Warcraft being one of the most popular PC games ever made, Bejeweled Blitz quickly became even more famous all around the world.

Pop Cap revealed the third installment of Bejeweled in late October, 2008. Before Bejeweled Twist was released, players had been matching gems in pairs of two similar colors. The game had now become more difficult, forcing its players to create matches of 3 similar colored gems.

In late December of 2008, Pop Cap released the game we now know as free online Bejeweled Blitz. It was first available to the public as a Facebook application which allowed players to compete for high scores with their online friends.

As Bejeweled Blitz gained popularity on Facebook, Pop Cap decided to create a Bejeweled Blitz add on for the Apple iPhone in Early November of 2009. A week later, Pop Cap and Square-Enix revealed Gyromancer, a game that combines elements of both Bejeweled Twist and RPG games. This game became available for Xbox Live Arcade as well as Microsoft Windows. About a month later, Bejeweled Twist was released for the Nintendo DSiWare.

The free online Bejeweled Blitz games were becoming so popular that in early February of 2010, Pop Cap announced that every 4.3 seconds, a copy of the Bejeweled franchise was sold and that in total, over 50 million units had been bought. Bejeweled had become of the top ten best selling video games ever.

In most recent news, Pop Cap released Bejeweled 2 for the recently available iPad in the UK.
