"Great art is precisely that which never was, nor will be taught, it is preeminently and finally the expression of the spirits of great men."
A John Ruskin quote - English writer, art critic and social reformer
(1819 - 1900)
Have You Been Wanting To Paint ?
Have you been wanting to learn how to paint? Wanting to try your hand at creativity with a palette, brushes and paint? I've always liked this quote by Pablo Picasso: "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."
Painting is a relaxing pastime. Webster defines the word pastime as "something that amuses and serves to make time pass agreeably." And in today's busy world it is nice to find some time to relax and, with a favorite hobby such as learning how to paint and creating pictures of favorite subjects, the time will pass agreeably.
A few guidelines should be followed to get started. There are many books that can be ordered with basic information about supplies and about the necessary first steps in starting with a good sketch. It isn't necessary to make a complete drawing beforehand, but the areas of importance and other considerations should be lightly indicated on the painting surface before applying paint. If you are painting a landscape you will learn about colors and which ones to use to give the effect of distance in your painting.

ART LESSON ONE
First Consideration - Know Where You Are Going
Before starting the painting, the artist should determine what the area of interest is and where it is located on the canvas. This should be indicated with a lightly drawn pencil mark.
When this is determined, he should then decide the direction of the lines of other details in the painting such as branches or roads so they lead to the area of interest. An initial sketch can then be drawn which can be just a few lines to indicate direction or it can be a detailed drawing, depending on the subject matter of the painting.
.
A Lundy
Five Steps in Creating the Initial Sketch
Sketch just a few lines - or a more complicated drawing
2. You will want to have a center of interest, also called the focal point, where viewers can rest their eyes as you bring them into your picture. A general rule is to place the focal point about 1/3 of the way in from any outside edge of the canvas but not at the center line of the canvas, either horizontally or vertically. The focal point is the area of lightest lights and darkest darks which will help draw attention to the area.
3. Be sure that any lines in the picture generally lead to the center of interest. This can refer to roads, paths, fences, edges of water or flower beds. Lines should be broken, using shrubs or grasses.
4. The direction of the light source should be determined and shadow areas indicated.
5. Have a basic knowledge of perspective. Items are smaller in the distance and a simple understanding of perspective will help you to correctly draw the direction of lines as they recede, especially if you are including buildings in the picture.
No skillful application of paint will produce a successful painting if the initial drawing is incorrect.

A Simple Look at Perspective
What's all this talk about perspective? -
Aerial perspective - from Webster's Dictionary:
"The expression of space in painting by gradation of color and distinctness"
Sometimes called atmospheric perspective.
In a nutshell - As objects recede, color appears more blue and objects blur.
Linear perspective - Parallel lines converge as they recede

Perspective Without Pain

Read the Reviews
Foreground objects, such as rocks, appear larger as they come forward which adds to the sense of distance in the landscape. The colors are rich and warm, where receding colors appear bluish and somewhat gray in the distance. Therefore, the lightest lights and the darkest darks are used in foregrounds but care should be taken that the foreground features do not dominate the subject matter and take away from the center of interest, thereby allowing the eye to be brought into the picture..

Color and How to Use It
(Artist's Library series #05)

Read the Reviews
For the areas in a painting to have the correct relationship with each other, an understanding of color is necessary. The warm colors, the yellows and oranges, come forward. They are the first to fade out as they recede. Colors in the distance take on the blue of the atmosphere. Edges of objects become blurred as they recede and colors fade. Background trees ae bluer, grayer, lighter and less distinct.
To have an understanding of color and how opposite colors on a color wheel will gray a color and the effect of adding white to a color, there are many helpful references with basic information.
Know Your Art Supplies
It is important to use the best quality of art supplies that the artist can afford, but when starting to paint, a limited number of paints and brushes can be chosen. As the artist progresses and begins to develop his own painting style, he will add more colors and more sizes of the brushes that he prefers to use and expand his basic art supplies to more personal selections.
Brushes
Flat synthetic brushes are a good choice. Brights are short, flat bristle brushes. Filbert brushes have oval-shaped points. For Rigger or Liner Brushes, sable brushes are preferred by many artists, using Size 1 or smaller for fine line work and larger sizes for tree branches, etc. Clean brushes after each session. If using acrylic paint, do not let the paint dry in the brushes. Wash acrylic paint from brushes with soap and water.
Palette knives
Palette knives are used for mixing paint on the palette. Trowel-shaped painting knives are also used for removing paint from palette or canvas.
Palettes
When using oil paints, a wooden palette is preferred. Clean off the palette at the end of each session. For acrylics, use a plastic surface or paper palettes.
About Acrylics
Acrylics date back to the 1950's. They dry very quickly so they can be painted over without picking up pigment from previous layers of paint, maintaining clean color. Acrylics are water based and are thinned with water and the brushes are cleaned by washing in soap and water. Because acrylics dry so quickly, a retarder, which can be added on the palette, will prolong the drying time for a short period allowing for blending and otherwise manipulating the paint.
Choosing Your Painting Surface
Canvas boards are less expensive than stretched canvas, they are lightweight and take up very little space. As you progress, you may prefer the resiliency of stretched canvas.
Easels
When using either a tabletop or floor easel, the canvas or canvas board should be tilted to avoid light reflections on the painting surface.
Oil Paints
Oil paints have been used by artists for centuries. They can be used with much versatility, thinly or thickly, and applied with brushes or painting knives. They dry slowly, allowing time for working the paint on the canvas and even scraping the paint off and starting over again.
Special Mediums
When using oil paint, special mediums are required for thinning the paint, for using the paint in special ways such as glazing, and in cleaning the brushes.
