Web Hosting. Using Free Hosting Services.
The downside of free hosting is that advertisements will be placed on your site by your host. You have no say in the matter, you cannot delete them. Also, when the servers are down for any reason, your website is down, too. The hosting company will first work with getting the paying members sites back online, before yours. Plus, your space in bandwidth is limited, meaning that you're only allowed so many visitors, and you can't have a lot of images and graphics, etc. which will exceed your bandwidth allowance. Doing so can cause your site to be suspended. The same policy applies to a hosting provider, outside of ISPs, regarding free site building and hosting.
If you decide to use free hosting, look for hosting services that will give you a percentage of profits from the ads being placed on your site. Such an example would be here at Squidoo. Squidoo is the only company I know of that pays you a percentage of profits from the ads of sponsors placed on your free hosted site. You can get started building a site in 60 seconds or less. The more sites you build, the more profit shares you earn.
The "build a site free" with free hosting is now becoming more popular among the ISPs and HSPs.
Web Hosting. Paying For Hosting Services.
There are many of you who want to pay for hosting. There are a variety of rate plans to fit your budget. You can pay by month, or go ahead and buy for the whole year, which is recommended. It's not as expensive as you might think. In some cases, to pay for hosting for the entire year, at the lower end is around $60-$100. In that way, you don't have the uh-oh! dreaded monthly payment coming around. The benefits of using paid hosting is obviously, no advertisments on your site. But, it is to your benefit to place PPC ads on your site. You are paid when people click on these ads. You can apply to Adbrite, Google, Yahoo, and other paid to promote companies to set up a campaign designed for your website. Also, within your hosting provider's site, you have access to free services such as live support, website builder, email accounts, ftp, domain and content management, and marketing resources, including tracking visitors to your website.
With some hosting providers, they also include up to $100 free Yahoo or Google PPC(pay per click)credits to help you get fast and targeted traffic to your new site. Also, you're guaranteed that the server experiences minimum outages. This works to your advantage especially, if your site is your, bread and butter, one of your sources of income.
Types of Webhosting
Free to least expensive.
- Free Hosting.
- The provider hosts your site on their server for free, but advertisements from different sponsors will be placed on your site.
- The user's site shares one web server with hundreds or thousands of other user's sites.
- The costs are shared too, but, still CPU and Bandwidth usage is limited.
Least expensive to expensive:
Managed Hosting.
- The user gets their own server, but does not have full control over it, neither owns it.
- Changes made to any data content, can only be done remotely through managements tools, such as ftp.
- The hosting provider does not allow full control to keep the user from making any changes to the server, which could lead to configuration problems, on the whole hosting server.
Unmanaged Hosting. - The user has system experience to manage their dedicated server and has full control to customize configurations.
- The user gets to control an entire server, not shared with anyone. Even though he has this control, he still doesn't own it.
- Full admin access is available.
- The user is responsible for the maintenance and security of the server.
Shared Hosting
Dedicated Server.
Operating Systems/Hosting Help and Support
Unix Hosting. Unix is one of the two major operating systems used in web hosting, the other being Windows. Within, Unix, is Linux a free operating system, with source code that is freely available to everyone. It offers some unique capabilities that doesn't exist in Windows. Most web hosts use this free version or Unix(Linux)over the Windows system.
Reseller Hosting. A person who acts as a middleman or agent selling web hosting server space on the behalf of the hosting service provider.
Co-Location Hosting: Also nicknamed Colo, is when a company moves it servers and network equipment to another location. This is done in order to decrease the extremely high costs associated with housing their own equipment. Data Centers, called colocation providers now become responsible for the equipment. The data centers also provide hosting, and most of the time internet connectivity.
In closing, depending on the type of website you want hosted, whether it's personal or business, will be the deciding factor to lead you to the most favorable type of hosting for your needs. Hosting possibilities are endless, and if you have the time and patience you can use trial and error to find a pretty good hosting service, or, eliminate that hassle and just follow other's recommendations and reviews to what works.

- Free websites are great if you're just starting out and you can make good money on Squidoo and other revenue sharing sites. But as you gain experience you should buy some domains and host them on your own account. I think using both is a good strategy for building your online portfolio. Great lens!
