Free Skull Cap Pattern

Crochet Skull Cap Pattern

Crochet a lovely skullie for yourself or for someone else.

The only stitches you need to know are a half double crochet and then with that same stitch 'cross over' the next stitch.

Sounds a bit confusing at first but once you get it You'll be making lots of these.

Materials You Will Need

Yarn, Hook and Stitch markers

For this pattern I used a J-Crochet Hook. If you want the hat to be smaller just use a smaller hook. You can visit Crochet Hats to view the Common hats Sizes.

If I use acrylic yarn I usually try and use Lion Brands Vanna's Choice yarn because of all the acrylics out there they seem to be softer and drape better.

For this hat I used Lion Brand Vanna's Choice 1 skein of Olive and a darker color for the trim.

To keep track of your rounds you might want to purchase a stitch marker or use a contrasting piece of yarn to mark your rounds.

A tapestry needle is also needed to weave in stray ends.

Softer than Most Acrylics

When I must work with acrylic yarns - my budget is a tight one - I choose Vanna's Choice because it is softer than most acrylic yarns.

It does not have the 'plastic' sound when your crochet with it.

It also drapes well for hats, scarves, and shawls.

A really cool feature about this series of yarn is that all the colors were designed to complement each other. So no matter what project you choose or what colors you have on hand, they will work - it's designed that way.

Important!

Pattern Notes

Do not Join Rounds - You are working in a spiral
(M) means to move your stitch marker [first stitch in each round]
SC - single crochet
HDC - half double crochet
SlSt - slip stitch
Increase - 2 stitches in same chain/stitch

How many hats do you own?

Inquirer minds want to Know

I have never been much of a hat person, that is until I learned to crochet.
I believe i have crocheted near 200 hats since I learned in 1999. Some of the hats where for me but mostly they were for the local shelter.
I now wear a hat in the California winters - the funkier the better.

I liked this pattern but when i did it the hat came out "too short" and not tight it wouldn't stay on my head at all I don't have a small or big head. I think I'm going to add more onto it hopefully then it'll be usable it would be a shame to rip it all out now when I've been working on it for hours.

Ever since I inherited a kindle I have really been blessed by the offerings in the Amazon Kindle store. A lot of what I read are free downloads but the best purchases I have made have to be the Crochet Patterns.

You might think the quality of the pattern would be bad but it's not. The pictures [although not in color] are clear which makes it easy to follow.

The best part is I can take it anywhere without having to print the pattern out. [which I could do if I download it to my PC]
