Measure Your Bathroom...

and draw it to scale

This is the first step. Take some time to measure and draw a diagram of your existing bathroom. Using squared paper can help a lot here, as it will enable you to draw to scale very easily. Be as accurate as you can with the measurements and the drawing because you will use them a lot later on. Click here for free graph paper

Measure the distance between opposite walls on both sides of the room in case the room is wider at one end than the other. Measure floor to ceiling and the position and size of windows including the depth of the window. Also measure the size, position and shape of any irregularities in the room such as pipework.

Draw a floor plan of your bathroom from above and a plan of each wall. When you've finished you will have 5 drawings and a set of measurements. Make sure that you take these and a tape measure with you wherever you go because you will need to use them often.

Forget about bathroom showrooms and magazines for now

Bathroom showrooms and home improvement magazines will be important later but to begin with they are trying to sell you something and can confuse and divert you from the task of deciding what you really want. Leave them alone for the time being.

Put your digital camera to good use

Photograph everything you see

Take a digital camera with you whenever you're in bathroom design mode and use it to make a visual record of everything you come across. Note down what each image is about and file it away carefully on your computer for later. This is an excellent design technique and most people don't do it.

Call your friends

Your friends are often the best resource for bathroom remodeling ideas that you have available to you. Go and visit each and every one of your friends and ask them if you can take a good look at their bathroom. Most people are more than happy to oblige especially if they have recently had their bathroom rebuilt.

Ask lots of questions to find out what their ideas were before they remodeled, how their ideas changed while they were doing it, what they like about their bathroom and just as important, what don't they like about it. Make good understandable notes while you are looking around so that you don't forget anything.

You will probably find that most of your friends will have either redesigned their bathroom in the last few years or they will know of someone who has. If they do know of someone who would be willing to show you around see if you can arrange to go and take a look.

Make use of real estate agents

Make them work for you

Real estate agents in your area will arrange for you to go and view properties for sale and if you tell them that you are looking for a great bathroom they will try and find them for you.

If you feel uncomfortable about this because you think that you have no intention of purchasing a new property then I suggest that you get over it. It's a fantastic way to get ideas for your own bathroom and you never know what might happen when you start looking. You wouldn't be the first or the last to do this kind of research and then end up buying a new property instead so don't feel bad about it.

Visit the bathroom showrooms in your area

You have to do it sooner or later

If you think that you know what you are looking for now is the time to visit the showrooms in your area to find out what is available and start matching your ideas to items that you can buy. Make notes and take pictures with your digital camera of everything that you find interesting.

Pick up brochures from the showrooms

Find as many brochures as you can get for free from the showrooms. Make sure that you have the manufactures brochure for everything that you might be interested in. If you don't see the paperwork them be sure to ask for it.

Good luck with your bathroom-remodeling project.
