WEC 32 Odds and Analysis
LIVE ON VERSUS 9 P.M. ET/6 P.M. PT
WEC is the best organization, without a doubt, and this event helps prove my point. The three headliners on this card are all great at different MMA disciplines. Who strikes better than Razor Rob, submits slicker than Condit or wrestles better than Beebe?
It seems like each WEC event has a fighter on the card that creates an internet swell, last time it was Gandulla, Yahya before that. This time it's Carlo Prater? Nothing against Prater, but he's been around and never quite made a break through. Sure, he had an avenging win a few months ago, but was completely lackluster in victory. Well, he gets another revenge shot against Carlos Condit. While I rate revenge very high on the motivational totem pole, it's more important to have the talent necessary to beat your opponent. Condit is a better fighter than when he previously beat Prater, who's slipping a little since. Prater's caution first, plodding style is perfect for lay n pray wins over weaker opponents, but I don't see any way to lay on Condit for three rounds without getting choked out, arm barred, gogoplatta'd or something. Condit deserves to be -250 or more. If our boy Nick post the line under it, jump on it.
Chase Beebe could be the best fighter you never heard of. All cardio arguments end here. Beebe has the best cardio since Lance Armstrong. Oh, he's a decent wrestler too. Beebe could have lost to Yahya in his last fight, but he escaped some very serious submission attempts, worked his way into good positions where he was able to control his opponent. It was an impressive win. He could be susceptible to a quick, crisp puncher who has excellent takedown defense. That's not Miguel Torres. Torres is an accomplished fighter with only 1 loss, this is a big chance for him to step it up. This fight will eventually end up on the mat (Torres was taken down easily by Bedard, who is nowhere near the wrestler of Beebe) where Beebe will be tough to beat. Beebe will probably be listed around -300, which is too high for my taste. Condit is a safer play at a better price.
The classic matchup of a puncher vs the wrestler, that's the story with McCullough and Varner. I see McCullough at about -200 or so. His intensity level and explosive striking should be the determining factors. If Varner can take him down it's game on, but McCullough has the agility and foot work to punish Varner as he attempts to shoot in. I feel the talent level at the top in the WEC not far from the UFC and this fight could make or break the theory. Although Varner has competed well in the UFC, Razor Rob is a "cut" above.

Understanding Mixed Martial Arts Betting Odds:
Tim Sylvia -270
Randy Couture +210
The negative number is always the favorite. Sylvia is -270 which means you must risk $270 in order to win $100. The positive number is always the underdog. Couture is +210 which means you must risk $100 in order to win $210.

Let's Pick the Winner of a UFC Fight:
Mixed martial arts is a difficult sport to consistently pick a winner. This is because of the various styles of fighters and the relative lack of knowledge surrounding the sport. With more than 10 years of UFC and other MMA fighting evolving in the US it has become obvious that a fighter's success in mixed martial arts is based on several key components. By analyzing a fighter's strength in these components and comparing his opponent strengths, it is becoming easier to determine a winner.
3 Dimensional Fighting: A fighter needs to have a three dimensional approach to fighting. They need to stand up and strike effectively to inflict damage while defending against takedowns. They must control or escape their opponents while clinching and inflict damage while in close quarters. They must defend or defeat an opponent on the ground by submission or ground and pound.
Well Prepared Professional Athlete: Steady, consistent training and fighting regularly are positive signs of a focused, motivated and fit athlete. The fighter's fitness level obviously needs to be high, but this is an aspect that needs to be watched closely in MMA fighters. There is a persistent belief that heavier is better and the fighters very often cut large amounts of weight prior to weigh-in, which leaves them physically and mentally tapped when they should be at their peak. It also shows a lack of preparation, both short and long term.
Streaks: Winning and losing streaks are very important factors in a fighter's confidence and if they are improving or possibly declining. These athletes go thru a lot so look for signs that point to rapid decline or a possible breakthrough performance.
Training Environment: Who is the athlete training with? Success breads success in MMA. Top level experienced fighters and trainers can mentor and place young athletes into successful situations. Good competition within camps develops top fighters. Watch out for fighters that take bouts on short notice hailing from Miletich or American Top Team.
