Ellacoya Networks, a communications equipment company, that says that Google's YouTube accounts for nearly 10% of all traffic on the Internet.

That is a massive amount! My last article was about using youtube to get traffic - It wasn't made by me, and was obviously an attempt to use youtube - to promote his site... which is kinda the point.

So... do you think it's at 10%? As far as I know, Ellacoya Networks didn't really show where they gathered their stats from, so it could be made up - but 10% is a whole lot of traffic! Can you imagine the hosting requirements???

Social Networking has become extremely popular over the last few years. It
is one of the newest ways to gain free traffic to your website. MySpace is a
service that allows members to communicate through photos, user profiles,
web forums and groups. Face Book is also a similar service but not as big as
MySpace. By using this advertising method, it is a great way to advertise
your services to mass groups of people.

When you first sign up for a new account, your advertising ability is very
limited. If you want to succeed using this method you must have lots and
lots of friends in your profile. There are various strategies you can use to
increase the number of friends in your profile and hence the number of
people in your advertising network.

Building your friends list on MySpace can be tedious and boring. The
advantage of having thousands of friends is quite simple, you are able to
access and give messages to people almost instantly. In most cases you will
be advertising your services. The bulletin feature allows you to tell people
what is happening on your site at a particular time. If you want to take it
further you can post individual comments on your friends profiles, but the
larger your network the more time it will consume.

The traditional way of increasing the amount of friends in your profile is
to spend time each day searching for people with similar interests to yours
and asking them to become your friend. In recent developments, there has
been software released such as Friend Adder that has the potential to add up
to 500 people per day to your network. There are even programs that will
automatically send comments to your friends.

This tactic also known as MySpace advertising can be a great way to increase
exposure to your website and increase earnings weather you are selling an
individual product or service or if you have a site set up specifically for
AdSense. As with any way to get free traffic, the more time you put into the
project, the better results you will achieve. I have know many people that
have successfully used this method and they all believe that the time it
takes to increase your social network is definitely worth it when they
notice more traffic flowing into their sites.

So... for those of us who got in too late to snag all of the cool website addresses - the next best thing, on a zero budget, would be to get a free email account that half decent.

I have trafficbunnies@hotmail.com, yahoo, gmail and AIM - just so that it's easier for members to remember. This works great for the IM systems, eg gtalk, msn, yahoo etc - and gives your clients an easy way to contact you.

Sure - still use your email accounts that you get through hosting. When emailing people the whole diggydog59@hotmail.com just doesn't cut it. Use the admin@yoursite.com - but register the free email versions too ;)

various options available when it comes to banner or link exchange. You can
either join a network or come to agreements one on one with other
webmasters. Whatever type of exchange you choose, make sure you advertise on
similar sites to yours to increase the number of people that would be
willing to click on the link. This method of increasing website traffic
would be one of the most well known and most used strategy among webmasters.

If you choose to join a banner exchange network the first thing you need is
an attractive banner. You can make one easily in Microsoft Paint or you can
use a more advanced graphics program such as Photoshop. I would avoid using
moving or flashing banners, they may get the visitors attention but most
flashing banners bring spam sites into people's minds. You may want to
include the name of your site or use a humorous slogan but choose one
relative to your niche. Putting your main keywords in the banner has worked
well for me over the years.

When you sign up for a banner exchange website, you are required to place a
banner on your own website. The greater the number of times the banner loads
on your site, the more often it will be displayed on other peoples websites.
You need to be cautious because banner exchange services can make your site
look unattractive and sometimes repels visitors when they find out you are
using free services.

If you are not quite into banners you may prefer link exchanges. They will
not only bring you website traffic but also increase your ranking on search
engines such as Google. It is quite common for webmasters to have "partner
links" somewhere visible on their website. When you are starting off you
will have limited traffic and a low page rank, this option can be tedious
and slow and also the quality of links that you exchange for are often poor.
However once your website has been around for some time, you will have a
decent Google page rank and some good traffic sources. The higher your page
rank, the higher quality of sites you will be exchanging links with. If you
don't mind spending a bit of cash you could consider buying some cheap
directory links.

Digg is one of the most popular and commonly used social news site. there
are plenty of alternatives around but in recent years Digg has outcompeted
many different sites. When a visitor first arrives at Digg they can view
articles and search for topics that interest them. Once the visitor finds an
interesting topic they can click on the link that will redirect them to the
website where the article was originally found. The very few people who get
their articles on the front page of Digg can receive thousands of unique
visitors in a number of hours.

There is a theory that once you have worked out the system it is very easy
to get your article on the front page. Many people that have got on the
front page of Digg have got it more than once. The most important strategy
you can use is to write interesting and unique articles with attractive
headings that will want people to click and read the entire article. The
articles do not have to be long in length but long enough to make the
visitor spend a reasonable amount of time at your site. You should check all
spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting your article.

The two biggest social bookmarking sites are digg.com and del.icio.us.com,
both use the fundamental concept of centralized bookmark management.
Although the sites look different they are the same and many different ways
that are not visible just by viewing the site. Some people argue on the
quality of visitors from these sites. If you use primarily Google AdSense,
you will find out that the clicks by these visitors are worth near to
nothing.

To succeed in this type of online marketing you must understand what people
are like and what they will click on. By using words such as "How to" and
"Top 10" has improved the number of visitors I have received in the past.
Also be away of the time zones, you should try to post at the time where
there is most people online to give your article the best chance of reaching
the main page. The most important tip I can give you is to offer "fresh
"articles and make sure the article contains up to date information.

Forum and blog posting is one of my favorite forms of free internet
advertising. You would probably be aware of what a forum is so it does not
need explaining. Out of blogs and forums, I find that forums are more
effective. You may have already tried this technique but there are many
different ways to increase the traffic you receive from using this tactic.

When you post on a forum, most offer the opportunity to include signature
links whenever you post, usually underneath. You should not make the links
in big lettering or bright colors. By posting useful and interesting posts,
other members will want to find out more about who you are and they will
click on your signature link to see what websites you own. Also the more
posts you make, the more exposure your links will receive.

You have probably seen on many blogs the option to comment an entry. By
mentioning your website in your comment you can gain visitors to your
website, especially with the larger blogs. You should choose blogs that have
something to do with the niche of your website and possibly offer something
for free such as an eBook or tip. I have found that with half an hour of
blog posting per day I can receive 200-500 unique visitors depending on
where and how I post. With forum posting I have once received 800 unique
visitors but that was with nearly a full day of posting. After a while you
will lean where, how and what to post to gain the most visitors.

Forum posting will not only generate visitors to your website but will also
increase your number of back links. The more back links you have the better
you will rank in the search engines so it can be said that forum posting is
not only for short term development but for also long term development.
After a while of forum posting you will find various strategies to use and
you will increase the number of posts you will be able to make in a set time
period.

Have you taken the time to list your site at DMOZ.org? It's a valuable few minutes spent. You should do it now - because it can take upto 6 months for approval.

Make sure your site is established first, and then ensure that you have applied for submission in the correct category.

When your site is approved in Dmoz, google and other search engines look upon your site with more 'favor' and will boost your search engine ranking - so that when someone is looking for your key word phrases, the chance of your site appearing closer to the front pages is higher :)

Most people underestimate the impact that a blog can have on your site. Yeah, sure - you might sell bicycle parts - but add a blog to your site, and will increase web traffic like crazy!

I would recommend installing Wordpress. If your hosting uses cpanel, most of them allow you to add it via their one-click install system.

Update it, by adding content at least once a week - and you will have people finding it - via Search Engines within a week or so.

If you have a mailing list on your site, make them aware of the blog - and encourage them to drop in and post a comment or two. If you can get them to comment, it's less fresh content that you need to think up!

An oldie, but a goodie. The search engines thrive on fresh content, and the more specific to your site, the better! Write good quality, unique articles, don't just regurgitate something that a million other sites have done.
