The Versatile French Easel
French easels combine a sketchbox, an easel, and a canvas carrier all into a versatile, portable, fairly lightweight painting easel, often used outdoors for plein air painting. They come in a fairly wide price range and have enough features to suit most artists who have limited studio space or like to paint outdoors.
They often come with a palette, you can store your paint supplies inside the sketch box, and your canvas easily attaches to the easel. They can be used for watercolor painting too. You simply keep the cover closed to keep your watercolour painting horizontal. If the easel surface isn't flat, you can attach your paper to a canvas or a board such as untempered masonite.

Prefer a pochade box?
The pochade box (a.k.a. cigar box pochade) is a wooden box, often mounted on a tripod, that stores paint tubes, art mediums, and the painting palette. The canvas or other painting surface attaches to the pochade box lid after it's opened, where the artist then begins the painting. Some types of painting surfaces can also be stored in the box in slots or in a separate compartment which helps to protect the finished painting.
