M Pokora

French Pop/R&B Male Singer

Squidoo French Songs, M PokoraM Pokora

Here's "En Attendant La Fin" ("waiting for the end"), a sensitive single from M. Pokora, who I'd describe as a French Justin Timberlake. He specializes in club bangers and R&B ballads with Pop appeal. Check out his new album, A la poursuite du bonheur.

Jali

French Acoustic Folk Singer

Jali

The Belgian, Rwandan-born, French-speaking singer Jali has a unique style that incorporates elements of Folk and Gypsy Jazz. From his debut album, Des jours et des lunes, here's "Un jour ou l'autre."

Thomas Dutronc: Jazz Manouche Singer

Thomas Dutronc

One would think the son of 60's French pop icons Francoise Hardy and Jacques Dutronc would aspire to Pop notoriety himself, but alas, Thomas Dutronc stepped out in a totally different direction -- embracing Gypsy Jazz (jazz manouche).

Dutronc was inspired by the 1930's gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, and at 34 years old, put out his first solo album, Comme un Manouche sans Guitare (like a Gypsy without a guitar), which enjoyed strong sales in France.

Now he's back with his second album in the same vein, Silence on tourne, on tourne en rond. Here's the second single, with a wacky video to boot, "Turlututu."

Gerald De Palmas

Top French Male Singer

Gerald de Palmas

I really like de Palmas because he sounds more like an Indie Pop/Rock singer than a typical French crooner. (He doesn't do that talk-singing thing that I hate). From his greatest hits album, Sur ma Route, here's "L'etranger."

Everybody, sing along with the English chorus!

Julien Dore

Julien Dore, BichonJulien Dore

Here's another tres bizarre video from Julien Dore's new album, Bichon. I don't quite understand what's going on in "L'ete Summer," but Juilen dances in the video, which makes it alright with me.

I love this happy little song by French singer Dave Dario. He's got a Jason Mraz kind of vibe. Check out "Je Cours."

Benjamin Biolay

Benjamin Biolay, French SingerBenjamin Biolay

French singer Benjamin Biolay is regarded as "le nouveau Serge Gainsbourg," which is precisely why he's not one of my favorite vocalists. I just don't like that talk-singing style. It's just not a turn-on to me. However, I thoroughly enjoy his production, which is why I always give his new music a listen.

So here's the deal. Biolay starred in a French film this past summer called Porquoi tu Pleures?, and he released a jazzy, melancholy album of music "inspired by the film." It' not an actual soundtrack, per se: Some music from the movie isn't on the album, and some music on the album never appears in the movie.

There are duets, guest vocals by actresses from the film, and a lovely Cole Porter remake, so be sure to give the whole album -- even if you don't care for Biolay's singing style. You're sure to find something you like.

From the album, here's "Si tu suis mon regard."

Corneille

Corneille, French SingerCorneille   (Available in Europe only)

Here's "Le jour apres la fin du Monde" (the day after the end of the world) by Corneille. I think he strikes just the right chord with this upbeat love song from his latest album, Les Inseparables.

What do you think of "Grandes Ames" by S. Petit Nico? It has a hint of hip hop flavor, yes?

Christophe Mae: Popular French Singer

Best French Male Singers

Christophe Mae, French SingerChristophe Mae

Christophe Mae is my favorite male artist for acoustic French Pop. His sophomore album On Trace la Route, spawned five hits: "Dingue, Dingue, Dingue," J'ai Laisse," "Je Me Lache," "Pourquoi C'est Beau," and "La Rumeur."

Now he's back with a live album of these hits and a new track, "Un Peu de Blues."

Talk about today's French Male Singers

I wish I could have included all of them, but who's your favorite among the French male singers featured here?

  • JaguarJulie Sep 9, 2010 @ 7:18 am | delete
Well, I am picking Tete ... French Troubador ... I am truly blessed that I have such a wide appreciation for music and singers. Thankful to mom for having played so many styles of music when we were kids!

All your French Music lenses are beautifully done, and this one on male French singers is certainly no exception. I love all your personal insights into the French music scene. Leaving a well-deserved ~*~* Angel Blessing *~*~

Thanks so much, Nicki. J'adore French music!

I'm not familiar with French male singers, but this is certainly a nice review of an interesting group of them.
  • AddaptAbilities Mar 24, 2010 @ 1:52 pm | delete
I liked Thomas Dutronc the best, but I'm biased toward jazz. The fusion of gypsy jazz and pop is really cool. If it swings, I can get behind it!
  • prosperity66 Mar 24, 2010 @ 1:43 pm | delete
I only love Thomas Dutronc in the list presented above. Not only because he liked and was inspired by my fellow Django Reinhardt but also because he definitely found and created a style that is his own and not something copied here and there...
    Dom.

Thomas Dutronc is definitely doing something unique. I think Tete is also. I like happy, upbeat pop music, which is why Christophe Mae and Pierre Guimard's songs appeal to me. It's the same kind of stuff I listen to in English. Thanks for visiting and sharing more about why Thomas Dutronc is so cool.
