The 2010 French Open Tennis Tournament
The French Open is renowned for being one of the toughest grand slams to win. The unique properties of the clay surface contributes to long rallies and mens' singles matches routinely go to 5 sets.
It is not unusual for tennis stars who have won the other three Grand Slams to finish their careers without having claimed a French Open title.

A look at what's to come and who to watch at the French Open
The French Open promises to deliver a festival of intriguing clay court tennis. In the mens' draw the 'King of Clay', Rafael Nadal, had his dreams of a second consecutive Grand Slam title and his fifth consecutive French Open title dashed in 2009.Roger Federer, meanwhile, will be hoping to win another French Open title this year.
The womens' draw of the 2009 French Open promises to be highly competitive, with the indomitable Williams sisters likely to face stiff opposition from the likes of Dinara Safina whose clay court wins have put veteran players under tremendous pressure. Venus Williams has also been eliminated from the tournament.
Players to Watch
- Fernando Verdasco: Fernando Verdasco came within minutes of upsetting Rafael Nadal in a tense semifinal at the 2009 French Open. Verdasco, like Nadal, is at home on clay, and has the stamina and skill to go all the way in the 2009 French Open.
- Venus Williams: The elder Williams sister has never won a French Open title, coming closest to winning the title in 2002 when she lost to Serena in the final. The French Open will be her chance of winning the tournament for the first time.
- We've got our eyes on Dinara Safina at the moment, she has been on fire with her excellent clay court season and is proving to be quite a tough contender for the women's singles title at the French Open.
French Open History
The French Open can trace its origins back to 1891 when the Championat de France International de Tennis was first played at Stade Francais in Paris. Entry to the tournament was originally restricted to French players and was played on lawn courts.According to French Open history, the French Open moved to its trademark 'clay' surface in 1912- with courts made of crushed red clay. By 1925 the French Tennis Federation had opened the tournament to foreign players, and top international amateur players began competing in the event on a regular basis.
In 1968 the French Championship made history by dropping restrictions on professional players participating in the tournament, becoming the first Grand Slam to go 'open'.

2008 French Open Highlights
The tennis world was rocked by the shock early retirement of four times French Open champion, Justine Henin, just two weeks before the Paris spectacular got underway. Henin's absence, along with that of Maria Sharapova, threw the women's draw wide open, allowing rising star, Ana Ivanovic, to claim her first grand slam title. The men's draw wrote the first chapter in what would turn out to be a brilliant year for Rafael Nadal. The young Spaniard powered effortlessly into the final of the tournament, where he met with arch-rival Roger Federer. The Swiss maestro proved to be no match for Nadal on his favourite surface and was eliminated in straight sets, as Nadal took his first major title of the year.
