I like to add a little vanilla extract as well as fenugreek seasoning. The fenugreek gives it a maple flavoring.

French toast is a delicious weekend breakfast treat for me. I like to use fresh challah bread and a mix of honey and maple syrup for the sauce. A little dash of cinnamon gives it a nice little kick too.

  • prosperity66 Apr 15, 2011 @ 5:35 am | delete
My secret is that, as a Belgian, I prepare the original recipe: milk, beaten eggs, frying sliced bread is a very small amount of butter and then spread icing sugar on the fried slices. That's it.
Why do they add butter on the sliced once cooked? It's horrible! And so bad for the health!
By the way, the original recipe is called "pain perdu"; which could translate into "leftover bread" or so ;)
    Excellent recipe page!

I love French Toast, and even though it's easy to make, I don't make it often. Love your photos - made me hungry too. ;-) Not sure I'd be adventurous to go outside the classic goodness, though I would try the blueberry syrup. Yummy lens!
  • Squidster Sep 13, 2010 @ 3:06 pm | delete
I'm hungry now! For convenience' sake I use those frozen ones from the grocery during the week, but nothing beats the scent of freshly made french toast wafting through the house on Sunday mornings.
  • hlkljgk Sep 9, 2010 @ 1:23 pm | delete
i like to add cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. and of course, being a new englander, pure maple syrup is the only way to truly enjoy french toast. :)
  • lemonsqueezy Sep 9, 2010 @ 12:56 pm | delete
Stale, dry bread soaks up the most batter? Wow... I didn't know that. I always try to use fresh bread. Thanks for the tip.
  • WindyWinters Jul 23, 2010 @ 2:05 pm | delete
Wow! I didn't realize there was actually a recipe for French Toast. I just wing it and add milk, eggs and sprinkle with cinnamon. The flat griddle makes sense and would probably work a lot better than a frying pan. I will have to try some of these recipes! Thank you!
  • puzzlemaker Jun 10, 2010 @ 5:53 am | delete
