French Guiana - Learn, Explore and Travel
Ranked #3,506 in Travel & Places, #108,892 overall
A passion for adventurous traveling? Then you should visit French Guiana.
Geography: Northern South America, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Brazil and Suriname
Climate: tropical; hot, humid; little seasonal temperature variation
Terrain: low-lying coastal plains rising to hills and small mountains
It is the only portion of mainland South America still governed by an overseas nation.
Capital of French Guiana is Cayenne
Languages: French, Guianese Creole

Cayenne: In 1643, Cayenne was landed by French traders and its french roots have become engrained in the city. From the architecture, to the cafes, to the french-style restaurants, the city has a decidedly french flair. The Place des Palmistes is the best place to meet or sit and relax watching the crouds while surrounded by palm trees, and a trip to see both the Musee Departemental and Fort Ceperou are worthwhile. Otherwise the french and creole cuisine is good and the markets can be bustling, especially on Saturdays.

European Space Agency
First settled by the French in 1604, French Guiana was the site of notorious penal settlements (collectively known as Devil's Island) until 1951. The European Space Agency launches its communication satellites from Kourou. It is the only portion of mainland South America still governed by an overseas nation.

Taki-taki
French is the official language of France, although Creole is widely spoken. The majority of the population speaks French while few understand English. However, some officials, police, and gendarmes may speak English. Because of the presence of many Brazilians and Dominicans, lots of people understand basic Portuguese and basic Spanish. On the Maroni river, Taki-taki is often used
