Further along the Artist's Way - and looking for fellow artists!

Two years ago, I did The Artist's Way and all the fantastic work it entailed. So now I'm about to take another step and do the 12-week set of projects in Julia Cameron's book "Walking in This World".

We now have a group of almost 30 people doing the exercises in this book together. I will be posting weekly updates here corresponding with each chapter of the book, and we can help each other. Week One will begin January 14. I am no longer accepting newcomers to the group. If you have the book and want to play along online, that's fine, and I welcome you to comment or join the flickr group.

Here's to a super-creative 2007!

Some Basic Core Concepts

Morning Pages, the Artist's Date

Morning Pages
You will need to do 3 pages of free-form writing every morning. These are not to be over-analyzed, corrected, agonized over, or shown to anyone. You wake up in the morning, roll over, and dump what's in your brain onto the paper. Every single day. No skipping. It's been noted in The Artist's Way that at about 1.5 pages in comes "The Moment of Truth" - where you start getting to the heart of what's really on your mind. You also do not need to be a writer to do this - whether you sing, paint, cook, or dance, you have to do the morning pages.

The Artist's Date
Once a week, you let your inner artist out to play. You go somewhere that's fun or interesting for you. You go ALONE. Go to the stationery store and pick out silly stickers. Go to the library. Go to see that movie nobody else wants to see, but YOU do. This is all about entertaining your inner artist and answering to nobody.

Trust me, I have three kids 4 and under and a job, and if I can manage an hour to myself, so can you. Please note also that these things have nothing to do with MAKING art. This is about refilling your well so that when you do want to paint, write, sing, act, whatever, you have this source to draw from. Don't overthink them. Just do them.

Week One:

Discovering a Sense of Origin
