Frequent Flying

Frequent flyer programs are a great way to get free airline flights, hotel rooms, mileage upgrades, and more. This lens lists the best frequent flyer programs and ways to get miles.

What is a Frequent Flyer Program?

All about frequent flyer programs

A frequent flyer program (FFP) is a loyalty program offered by many airlines. Typically, airline customers enrolled in the program accumulate points corresponding to the distance flown on that airline. Accrued points (also known as frequent flyer miles) can be redeemed for free air travel; for other goods or services; or for increased benefits, such as airport lounge access or priority bookings.

Getting More Frequent Flyer Miles

The fastest way to get more frequent flyer miles

There are many ways to get frequent flyer miles, but one of the fastest ways to get more is with a frequent flyer credit card. Frequent flyer credit cards give miles when they are used (usually one per $1 spent). In addition, they often give a sign up bonus for just being approved for the card--sometimes enough for a free flight.

If the card gives one mile per $1 spent, then, for example, spending $500 would net 500 miles. Most frequent flyer programs award a free domestic flight at around 25,000 miles. If a frequent flyer credit card is used often, the miles add up fast and a free flight can be reached fairly quickly.

I use mine for all of my expenses--cell phone, cable bill, gasoline, etc. It won't be long before I have a free flight.

Northwest Airlines Worldperks

Northwest Airlines Frequent Flyer Program

Northwest Airlines has their 'base' in the airport I use most (Minneapolis/St. Paul), so they're who I use the most when flying. I have had a lot of good experiences with NWA, and haven't ever had really any trouble.

They have a credit card available, the Worldperks Visa Card, which gives one mile per $1 spent. There is even a sign up bonus.
