Freshbooks: Bookkeeping For People Who Hate Bookkeeping

Why Would A Bookkeeper Want A Simple Bookkeeping App?

Although I use a lot of user un-friendly apps to get the job done everyday, my own bookkeeping needs are quite simple. I was looking for a streamlined app to invoice my bookkeeping clients, preferably something online that I could access no matter where I was.

I ran across Freshbooks in 2009, but then revisited it in 2010 after hearing about them in the book "The Referral Engine". I decided to give it another shot. Instead of just quietly testing it out, I decided to run a feature on my website, and do a month long experiment. During the month of June, 2010, I used Freshbooks exclusively to test it out. There are links in the lens pointing you to that series.

I will be constantly adding to this lens.

Why Freshbooks?

There are so many options out there. Some are cheaper, and some offer more features. So, out of all these choices, why would I choose Freshbooks.

SERVICE!!

Everyone at Freshbooks is genuinely concerned about their customers. I have had many interactions with the staff, and I have yet to come across another company who has treated me so well. Sure, I could save a couple bucks by going somewhere else, but I know that if I ever need any help that they will be there for me. And, they'll actually know who I am when I call.

5 People Who Would Benefit From Using Freshbooks

1. Freelance Writers/Bloggers

  • Easily bill out your clients for the work you've performed.

  • Track the time you spend writing.

  • Record the money you spend on supplies, online courses, and memberships.

2. Squidoo Lensmasters

  • Record the revenue your lens has generated.

  • Keep track of the time you have spent working on the lens, to see how much you are earning per hour.

  • Record your expenses related to running your lenses (internet connection, related software, etc.)

3. eCommerce Retailers

  • Freshbooks can link directly to several shopping carts, such as ZenCart, Shopify, or Magento.

  • Print out reports to see how well your business is doing.

4. Web Designers

  • Send out estimates to potential clients before you start work.

  • Let subcontractors (graphic designers, etc.) bill their time directly to one of your Freshbooks projects.

5. Other bookkeepers

  • Track the time you spend on each aspect of the project (bookkeeping, meetings, research, etc.).

  • Generate tax reports at year end for government filing.

  • Keep track of which clients still owe you money.

Great Book on Business Referrals

This book is the reason I decided to give Freshbooks another try last month (May 2010). I had used them very briefly before, but John Jantsch's profile of this customer-centric, Canadian (very important aspect) company made me want to go back and give them another look.

If you run any type of business, you will not regret buying this book. It has such good advice on how to build up your customer referrals.

I enjoyed learning about Freshbooks, a new product to me. I've been looking for something simple that I can recommend to clients to at least give me a starting point when I'm working on year ends. Software like Quickbooks or Simply are too complicated for them. Thanks for the idea!

You're welcome. You're right, Freshbooks is a great tool for clients. It would be even better if it and QB would work together, so the client could work in Freshbooks, I could do the heavy lifting in QB, and then send reports back to their Freshbooks dashboard.
