African American Artist

New Interpretations

Works by Zoya Taylor
Zoya Taylor, was born in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. She spent her early childhood in Germany and moved with her Jamaican father and Canadian mother to Kingston, Jamaica when she was eight. Her academic career includes a Masters degree in International Social Work, and teaching experience at universities in Canada, Jamaica and Norway. She is essentially a self-taught artist, but has taken classes in painting, sculpture and drawing.

She enjoys gallery representation in the USA, Germany and Norway, and has had a number of solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Europe and the Caribbean.
She currently lives in Oslo, Norway.
New Works by Tamara Madden
Tamara Natalie Madden was born in Jamaica and migrated to the United States as a teenager. While battling a life-threatening disease as a young woman, she turned to painting as a lifeline. She survived and continued to paint, she says, "in remembrance of other survivors".
Her work is influenced by her vivid memories of growing up in rural Jamaica. As she says in her Artist Statement, "Some of the specific influential memories that appear in my work are those of the working class; the stern elders; the dutiful children. Women appear frequently in domestic situations, just as I recall: care-taking, manufacturing, protecting and sharing wisdom with youth. My creative expansion, however, has allowed me to incorporate elements of religiosity including pieces that focus on the study of the human figure and black female/male spirituality and love".

Madden has exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions and her work can be found in private and public collections including Vanderbilt University, TN; and Alverno College, WI. She was a recent recipient of an individual grant from the Puffin Foundation for her project "Never Forgotten" which focuses on combating poverty.
Bob Martin Artist
a native New Yorker, surrounded by art, jazz, dance and basketball as a youngster and nothing has change in over 50 years. I discovered for myself the world of Cézanne, Degas and most importantly Modigliani. Also noticed the relationships between Duke Ellington and Gershwin, Miles Davis and Beethoven, Romare Bearden and Proust. All of these artists have influenced my approach to how I view painting and the world.
KERRY JAMES MARSHALL Black Romantic at Jack Shainman Gallery
His work often deals with the effects of the Civil Rights movement on domestic life, in addition to working with elements of popular culture. One work, "Rythm Mastr", is a superhero comic book based on African mythology and art set in an urban environment. His first major solo exhibition, which traveled throughout the country, was organized at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago in 1998.
Barkley L. Hendricks
Barkley L. Hendricks (born 1945, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a contemporary American painter who has made pioneering contributions to black portraiture and conceptualism. While he has worked in a variety of media and genres throughout his career (from photography to landscape painting), Hendricks' best known work takes the form of life-sized painted oil portraits. In these portraits, he attempts to imbue a proud, dignified presence upon his subjects, most frequently urban people of color. Hendricks' work has been noted as unique for its matrimony of both American realism and post-modernism.
