Ever wonder about what type of oyster lives in freshwater and produces a pearl. Well actually they come from mussels that live in freshwater. Freshwater pearl cultivation started around 1914 in Japan. Because of pollution in the specific lake they were cultivated in, Lake Biwa, freshwater pearl cultivation was moved by the Japanese to China. In the early 60's, cultured freshwater pearls started production in Tennessee.

The cultured freshwater pearl production in Tennessee has since ceased production and now operates as a tourist destination. The sole source of cultured freshwater pearl production is from China.

Cultured freshwater pearls are produced similar to cultured salt water pearls. They were once produced by the cockscomb pearl mussel. A single mussel could produce up to 50 pearls. But they were of low quality. So production was shifted to the triangle shell mussel, which produced fewer pearls, 20 to 30, but the pearls produced were of higher quality.
