HERE'S WHAT I THINK
Friends Don't Let Friends Buy Dell Computers
Dell sells inferior computers and doesn't honor the warantees, well not without a huge fight. 18 months ago I purchased a top of the line Dell laptop. It has been a nightmare. Cost $1700.00
My 8 months with my bottom of the line Apple laptop have been a dream. Cost? $1000.00
1. After one day they had to replace it. To their credit, they didn't argue about that, but it took a week of my being without a computer!
2. When I did have other problems (and there were many) I spoke on the phone to people who were half the way around the world. If I wasn't satisfied with them, there was nothing I could do but be frustrated.
(When I did something dumb to my Apple and it had to be repaired I called and spoke to someone in California. Very nice, much nicer than those far away guys, no need to complain. He suggested that I might have to replace the part, since it was clearly my fault. But, he gave me an appointment, that afternoon, to go to the store, I walked to the back of the store, the guy was very friendly, teased me a little about "making my CD slot 'smile'", took it to the back and in ten minutes brought it back, it wasn't smiling any more. He demonstrated that it was now working! Wow.
3. After months of not having it work right I finally convinced someone on the on line forum (if you insist on Dell, don't bother to call, do the one line forum) to finally agree to their promise to send a repair man to my house. Nice enough guy, but he didn't fix it (he did install the wrong operating system). Each time I needed him again, I had to beg for him to come back. He took it home for a couple of weeks (no computer during that time) He lost all my photos from France.
Apple: Well, there is that walk to the back of the store. If you are curious about getting an Apple go to a store, hang out there and notice the happy discussions. Friendly techs who fix things quickly so that the customers are happy.
4. I finally after months got them to let me send it back to them to fix it in their shop, whereever that is. They sent me a box in a couple of days. I returned it, and waited for it to come back. It was a little over a week, but they said I would have to reinstall everything myself. It did come back mostly installed, but somethings weren't and they won't work when I try.
That is when I decided to stop this nonsense, swallow my loss and go to the Apple store, I haven't looked back since.
YOUR TURN!

Yes, you're right! Dell Is Horrible and Here Is Why
snakesmom says:
UGH! Don't even get me started about Dell Computers... they are horrible!
rgasperson says:
I'd Rather buy a $400 computer from one of the Office Supply Stores and replace it when it needs to be replaced. Of course I don't need anything bigger than that, I am not a gamer.
skiesgreen says:
I have a dell Spiron desktop and must say I did not like the keyboard (letters faded) and when they replaced it the same thing, The printer is also a dud and I had a lot of problems in the beginning which I was putting down to the Vista program on it, Now I have a Toshiba laptop and so far no problems.
Built to order computers says:
I'm a small business owner, I own www.builttoordercomputers.com and for legal reasons i'm not allowed to slander the competition. But i hear this all the time.
All i have to say is this.... 97% of machines that i repair are either Dell or HP, It's been years since a Mac has hit my shelves for repair. The evidence speaks for itself.
If a particular manufacturer or model keeps coming back for repairs, then there's something wrong with that manufacturers model. It's as simple as that.
On a lighter note, I actually thank Dell, because they make the machines that keep me in business.
But on a serious note, I pride myself on building machines for people that last, I Guess that's why i'm still a small Business hahaha
But all i know is that in 6 years of business, Not 1 single machine that i have built has been returned for repair, I'm sure one will eventually, that's inevitable, but they haven't as yet. hahaha
apple4life says:
ill never buy a dell again even for cheap!
the support sucks i had to fix my dads numurus times for bad parts support sucks they dont help on the forms its bs apple for me ands building for me and laptops anything but dell or hp dv models
No way, Monkeybrain! I Love My Dell and Here Is Why
ECPComputersMore says:
After working several years with computers, I would say Older Dell computers were built well - as far as the newer Dell Computers, its sort of hit and miss. But despite Dell's not so stellar performance on reliablity, HP is by far the worst of the baddies. Cheap mother boards, cheap power supplies, and ackward case designs all equate to a big piece of junk,
grandmamarilyn says:
OH, no! I hope I don't have that problem. I am taking it to the Walmart I bought it from and see if they can fix a problem. I hope so. That line across the bottom of my screen is driving me crazy. The reason to go to Walmart is that I bought their service plan.
ElizabethJeanAllen says:
I bought a new computer this summer. It's the first time I didn't buy Dell. I've had really good luck with my Del laptop and desk top. I never had to deal with the service department. My son is now using my 5 year old lap top. No problems to date...
poddys says:
I have had good service from Dell on the other hand. Unfortunately everyone experiences different levels of service with all companies. My laptop cost $1,800 3 years ago, it's also top of the line, and bought to last. When the HD went after 3 years, they replaced it immediately, and since I went out and bought a larger one to replace it myself and reinstalled everything, I was only down for 2 days. They also last month allowed me to extend my warranty for a further 2 years, and to transfer it to the UK, since I have now moved. I am getting ready to have a keyboard problem looked at, which they will do at home too. Sorry to find you had problems with Dell.
Dell to North Carolina and the United States: "*&%*# You"
Think That Sounds Harsh? Read On:
Another kind of reason to stop buying DellNorth Carolina spent $318 million to get Dell to open a factory in Winston-Salem to give jobs to displaced furniture and tobacco workers. Now, one can argue that that was not worth it to get 905 $14 an hour jobs, but the workers were glad to have the work and the money.
But Dell took the deal that cost North Carolina all that money. 4 years and 2 days after Dell made the deal, the Americans who own Dell announced that $14 an hour was too expensive for them and they were moving to Mexico. They didn't announce how much they were going to pay the Mexican workers, but my guess is that it will be a whole lot less.
Link: North Carolina Fights Back
"We made it very clear to them (Dell officials), and they already understood it quite frankly, that every red cent of incentives money had to come back to the people of North Carolina," Gov. Beverly Perdue said this week.
Dell promised, "We will continue to comply with the agreements that were structured. If there is money to be repaid, we will," Dell spokesman David Frink assured Friday.
But it is looking like they won't repay any of it. Its expensive to open new plants in new countries, you know.
Link: Dell gets millions in tax dollars to open plant in North Carolina, then closes plant to move to Mexico, leaving taxpayers with nothing

This Is Not Your Older Brother's Mac!
Ten years ago someone got me to buy an Apple and I hated it.There was very little software and what there was was not as good and more expensive. For example my accountant wanted me to buy Professional Quicken. It cost more and didn't do everything she wanted. Ugh!
It was also hard to translate things to PC people.
Not any more. As I stated above Apple has great software, BENTO being just one example. Its cheaper and better than those made for PC's. You can even buy Office for Mac although I don't know why you would want to , I find IWork so much better. I am making more use of it than I ever did Office. Of course those classes might have something to do with it!
The Way Its Supposed to Be:
My Favorite Apple Goodie: (Better Than the Best Apple Pie!)
The Apple One to One Training Sessions! You know the saying "If its too good to be true, it probably is"? Well, forget it in the Apple store.
He offered me 52 or once a week one on one training for a total of $100, yes you read right, $100.
Now, I don't have to tell you that when you buy a PC you are on your own. You might find the right course cheap enough at your local county college, but you have to be there when the class is. Some computer stores offer classes, I looked into them years ago and they were $200 for 10 classes where I sat with more than 10 other people and learned what everyone learned.
With One to One I could come in once a week for a calendar year and sit face to face with a trainer who asks me what I need to learn, or when asks, will tell me what he or she thinks I would like to learn. Its up to me which.
The system has changed since I bought. Now you have the year, but can come in as often as you like. I have had several weeks with 2 sessions. All those years of owning PC's and I didn't know what they could do!
When I bought, the contract was that I could re-up once, now it is twice. I would have to buy another computer to be eligible for the 3 re-ups. I joked with my trainer that the classes are such a deal that it would be worth buying a new computer just to get them. Then I stopped joking because at $100 a year for the One to One, thinking what that would cost outside the Apple Store, the classes would be much cheaper and I would be getting the new computer basically for free!
Oh, and they also teach you how to use all the software. The basic computer has just about everything you would need. However, once I wanted to learn some data keeping for business. She told me how, but then suggested their $49 BENTO might be something I could use for the need. WOW. Its a great program. My PC friends are envious AND while it is pretty easy to use I am getting one on one instruction on everything it does!
But I have never had anyone push a software. I have had many, many sessions to learn how to do photo editing (the t shirt below is something the trainer helped me do!). The basic, comes with the computer program was very good, but I wanted more. The trainers went over all the possibilities and then showed me how to down load the free trials. They then taught me how to use them so I could decide which ones were best for me! Thank goodness because one just wasn't right for me and thanks to my trainer, I didn't have to buy it to find out .
But what is best is the trainers themselves. One is better than the other. They are patient, good teachers and know so much.
At first I would get attacked to one, then be disappointed if I got someone else the next time. However, I soon learned that that is great. They each know something the other didn't. Or have different ways of doing things, I can learn them all and decide which is best for me. This has worked out especially well for the photoing.
If you are a member, they also have daily groups sessions. If you have a project that you would like some help with, you come in with a few others and work on your project with the instructor there to help. These are three hour sessions and great once you have the basics and are ready to go, but know you will have questions.
No matter what you think you know, for $100 I would recommend this benefit.

- When buying a computer, simply do the research before buying. Thats really all it takes to get a great computer over a lemon. Make sure you know that every component going into the machine is reliable and not some off brand chinese junk that may last a year. If the computer has a questionable motherboard, hard drive, ram, or power supply: Don't Buy It! simple enough....

- I have a Dell purchased 2 years ago and like it well enough, although have been having a lot of virus attacks, despite anti-virus software. Fixed recently, but still a bit 'wonky'. Don't have much to compare it with -- never used an Apple (although my son & daughter swear by them). Have had a local 'build from scratch' computer and a Gateway before this Dell. Don't have a lot of computer experience to date, so don't have a solid opinion. :)

- I have both a dell desktop and a Toshiba laptop and only use the laptop now as it is far superior. But it also has Win 7 which is a better operating system, I agree that Apple make great computers and at University that's all they have. However, I switched to IBM supported comps as the programs are better, cheaper and more flexible. My son just bought an Apple and I think my next one will probably be one as well. I won't buy fromDell again although my daughter has just purchased one. Now I am feeling guilty about whether I should have talked her our of it, Nice debate
