Fringed Tulips

Fringed Tulips are perhaps the most unusual tulips of all, with their candy colors and frothy edges. They are still quite rare and not, it has to be said, universally loved. They are gaining in popularity though, especially some of the new single color double varieties.

Fringed Tulips are sometimes called Crispa Tulips.

Fringed Tulip Facts

  • Until recently, all Fringed Tulips had singles flowers. Today, double fringed tulips include Tulipa 'Maroon' and Tulipa 'Matchpoint'.
  • Height and flowering period depend on a variety's parentage. For example, many fringed tulips are related to Single Early Tulips, so they flower at the same time in late Spring.
  • Height ranges from 8" to 30" (20-75cm).

Tulipa 'Cummins' flowers in May. Try it with the equally frothy Aquilegia Nora Barlow.

Tulip HoneymoonA good one for the back of the border, Tulip 'Honeymoon' is tall, fringed and pure white when open. Height is 18" (45cm). Great for cut flowers too. It flowers in May. If you're looking for even more froth, pair it with white Parrot Tulips.

Tulip LingerieTulip Lingerie is a gorgeous new pink and white fringed tulip. Flowers appear in April/May, and height is 14" (35cm).

Tulip Swan WingsThis is a wonderful new fringed tulip, which bears fragrant pure white flowers in April to May. Try it with a pastel Fawn Lily, such as Erythronium hendersonii.

Tulip Blue HeronThis is a striking lilac and violet tulip, with a silvery fringe and a deep violet ring enclosing a white throat. Foliage is glaucous in spring, aging to green, and height is 24" (60cm). It flowers in May.

Great for borders and vases, glistening flowers are long-lasting and fragrant, and Tulipa 'Blue Heron' is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.

Tulipa Burgundy LaceThis is a gorgeous magenta fringed tulip, with silky, crushed-edged petals. Flowers are long-lasting, and appear late April to May. Height is 20"-26".

A new introduction, Tulip Queensland brings a unique froth of peach, pink and yellow to the already colorful world of fringed tulips.

It flowers in April/May and grows to about 45cm (18").

    I planted some Burgundy lace fringed tulips a few years ago but one of them comes up Burgundy and white with a fringe. It is quite striking and I am unsure if it is a hybrid. I can't find anything like it online. i have a picture but am unsure where to send it....Mike

    I love fringed tulips but the don't seem to last very long here in Iowa. Maybe the winters are just a little bit too harsh. Lovely photos!
