Basic Catch and Throw
"How do I start practicing freestyle frisbee?"
The fundamental pillars of Freestyle Frisbee is throwing and catching the disc; many athletes before becoming Freestylers practiced the common "Catch & Throw" with friends. This give them great control on the disc in comparison with whom started the art of Nail Delay and/or Airbrush. In fact, I always recommend beginners to practice a lot of Catch & Throw before proceeding to other steps for three main reasons:
1 Become familiar with the disc (movement in air)
2 Become familiar with the partner (positions)
3 Become familiar with the space/gravity
How to throw
"The first movement in the game"
We'll start analyzing the throwing because with a good throw you'll have a good catch, but with a bad throw you can have serious difficulties to catch the disc.Very often, in Freestyle we can see different kind of throw compared to other disc disciplines and, approaching Freestyle, you'll understand this.
Most of the throws show us 4 important aspects:
1 - Snapping the wrist
2 - Muscular looseness
3 - Direction
4 - Focus on coordination
1) A good snap of the wrist is important to create spin on the disc and you will understand by practicing that it's inversely proportional to the coordination (+ hit of wrist = - control on the throwing), increasing the margin of error. Acquiring more experience you'll increase the precision and at the same time you'll throw discs with such spin you won't believe yourself!
2) Muscular looseness is maybe underestimated by beginners but it's key to the game, especially practicing the throws. The more relaxed the muscles are before a throw, the more spin the disc will have when it's released. You need to "feel" the disc, "follow" its movement with the body and then release the frisbee with a fast and loose snap of your wrist/elbow/shoulder; the term "whipped" should be enough to explain what the motion.
3) The direction of course is so important that if it's bad, you won't reach the target. Before throwing the disc watch how you are holding the disc and try once or twice the body motion in slow motion, so that your muscle memory record that into your brain. The motion should create an imaginary line: that line should enter an imagery tunnel from you to your playing partner.
4) Last but not least, focusing on coordination is very important. You acquire it with time and practice, but is there something that could be made to improve it faster? Every player has his/her own method, but using the factor "focus" will improve your game immediately.
It seems banal, right? Well, try to make this exercise while you have to throw a frisbee: don't throw right away, breathe, relax your muscles, don't hurry, it's better to make 1 good throw than 5 bad ones. Now think about the specific throw you're about to make, focus your mind on its dynamics, it's an important throw, every throwing is important but THIS throwing is the most important because you are going to execute it now, the other ones will be important LATER (and it could be your last throw during Worlds finals!). Now imagine the line/arc the disc will draw from you to your partner and think about being there already, because you ARE the disc... throw!
