Friz Perls : Father of Gestalt Psychology and Therapy

Fritz Perls had some very inspirational and innovative approaches to psychology, and the way that the general well being of a whole individual effects thought, feeling and behavior. This lens will explore some of this famous psychologists theories and his life.

A Few Quotes from Fritz Perls

"Learning is the discovery that something is possible"

"The essence of a healthy person is that there is a unity, an integration of all the layers; he does not live merely in one level. He does not use just "words," but his words do have feelings and visions and convey all the senses. Words are used as tools. The same with machines, with gadgets, and so on. In other words, by integrating all these five layers we become truly ourselves, which means, we can discover the other, the world."

"To me reality is actuality. The past exists no more and the future not yet. Both Freud, with his emphasis on causes and on the past, and Adler, with his stress on goal seeking and concern with the future, miss the balance of the present tense. "

"...nobody can stand truth if it is told to him. Truth can be tolerated only if you discover it yourself because then, the pride of discovery makes the truth palatable." Fritz Perls

New: Lecture Notes from Fritz Perls

Here is two transcripts of lectures given by Fritz Perls that I found while doing more research for this page. This should be of interest to anyone studying the principals of Gestalt Therapy. Rather than quote a small section, here's a link so you can read them in its entirety at your leisure.

Note for college students: These are a must read for anyone doing a paper on Perls,- good source information and somewhat forgotten. :-)

Some Basic Information about Fritz Pearls

--- * From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Friedrich (Frederick) Salomon Perls (July 8 1893, Berlin - March 14, 1970, Chicago), better known as Fritz Perls, was a noted German-born psychiatrist and psychotherapist of Jewish descent.

Perls coined the term 'Gestalt Therapy' to identify the form of psychotherapy that he developed with his wife Laura Perls in the 1940s and 1950s. Perls became associated with the Esalen Institute in 1964, and he lived there until 1969. His approach to psychotherapy is related but not identical to Gestalt psychology, and it is different from Gestalt Theoretical Psychotherapy.

The core of the Gestalt Therapy process is enhanced awareness of sensation, perception, bodily feelings, emotion and behavior, in the present moment. Relationship is emphasized, along with contact between the self, its environment, and the other.

Perls has been widely cited outside the realm of psychotherapy for a quotation often described as the "Gestalt prayer". This was especially true in the 1960s, when the version of individualism it expresses was prevalent." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Perls)

Gestalt Prayer

"I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it's beautiful.
If not, it can't be helped."

If You're Really Interested in Studying Psychology and the Idea of Gestalt...

Fritz Perls explains it better in his own words than I could.

If I could only pick one book of interest in the field of psychology to read, it would be 'The Gestalt Approach' and 'Eyewitness to Therapy', which are both included in this informative volume. Fritz explains his theories in layman's terms. Some of what he gets into is very scholarly and deep, but he explains his concepts well enough that a smart teenager could understand it. Through the book he talks a lot about cathexis, catharsis what neurosis really is and how to work through your own issues.

I highly recommend it, whether you're a student of psychology, or simply someone interested in how the mind works and how to bring about healing and growth on mental and emotional levels

"I am not in this world to live up to other people's expectations, nor do I feel that the world must live up to mine." Fritz Perls

Our dependency makes slaves out of us, especially if this dependency is a dependency of our self-esteem. If you need encouragement, praise, pats on the back from everybody, then you make everybody your judge.

I do like the idea that we live on many different levels and that man can live on just one level to be healthy, that really makes sense. Another wonderful lens.

Great tribute lens and featured this on Brain Matters. It beggars belief that truth cannot be taught but has to come from within. It follows on from my own spirituality and knowledge that no matter how much evidence one has to the contrary one sticks firmly to beliefs they learned as a young child. Very interesting to read about this man.
