Bulletin Boards with a Frog Theme

A frog themed Unit Study needs a catchy bulletin board to capture your children's attention, brighten up the room and highlight skills that you are learning.

More than just decoration, these frog themed bulletin boards will invite the children to interact with the skills being taught while continually expanding their knowledge of the frog pond habitat.

Let's begin the transformation of your classroom with the bulletin board. The bulletin board that I suggest is a simple pond scene that can be transformed into a an interactive learning center that grows and evolves as you progress through the Frog Unit Study.

Turning a bulletin board from a wall decoration into an interactive learning center is easier than you think. Start with a theme such as frogs and then think about the skills your students are working on. Look for ways to turn your art into pop-ups. Each pop-up can hide an answer.

What rhymes with frog but starts with the letter "L"?

Interactive Bulletin Boards to keep the Frogs Hopping

Frogs with Cattails Bulletin BoardsCreate Bulletin Boards that are not only attractive, but also interactive. Bulletin Boards that invite students to actively participate in a game or hands-on activity also become student activity centers where students can learn as well as look.

Cover your Bulletin Board with an old blue sheet (or just paint one). Have the kids experiment with blue and yellow paint in the art center. Cut these paintings to add grasses and leaves to your board. Have children trace around their hands to form leaves and write the name and author of books they have read and then attach to the edges of the board. Use brown crayons to do rubbings of tree trunks and cut them out for tree trunks, branches etc.

Every Monday put a different problem on the board. Example: word problem for math, editing a sentence for writing, social studies question, draw the 3 kinds of levers for science...etc. The students then write their answer down on a frog shaped paper, put their name on it and staple it on the bulletin board.

At the end of the week correct them all. Those who got the problem right get their frogs put into a fish bowl. The teacher draws a name out and that person gets a reward. Kids loved it. This idea allows the teacher to put up bonus questions across the curriculum for the children to do in their spare time!

Though some may be tempted to tell the children that they can't change their an answer once it is written down, I find that the discussion that ensues when one child is trying to convince another of the correct answer is informative for both of them and requires that each one defends their own point of view.

As you add to the bulletin board, take the old pictures off and make them into class books. Put the books in the classroom library for the kids to read during silent reading time.

One day I put up a poster of this running frog. When the children walked in they were very surprised and excited by the image of a frog running. We talked about all the ways that a frog can move. Then I gave the children frog cutouts and asked them to write the verbs that would tell ways in which a frog could move on and let them attach the frog verbs to the bulletin board. These words were written large enough for the children to see them during writing workshop. This frog themed bulletin board became one more way for the children to learn grammar while increasing their vocabulary and improving their writing skills. Learn about verbs as part of the Frog Unit Study theme.

Interactive Bulletin Boards turn wall decoration into another learning center. This bulletin board of frogs gets kids actively matching frogs and flies, numbers and math facts.

Use red bias tape and push pins to make long frog tongues reaching out from the frogs to the Fly that matches.

Bulletin boards need not be just decorations on the wall. By making the bulletin board interactive, you now have one more learning center.

Homeschoolers might consider using a display board for a bulletin board. Mount your Hungry Frogs learning center on one side and a frog related math calendar on the other. When you are finished for the day they fold up easily and can be put in a closet to easily turn your classroom back into a dining room.

Each day we add another frog or log to the calendar. Frog, frog, log is an AAB pattern. Children guess which will come next, a frog or a log, while daily watching the pattern grow. This frog, frog, log pattern helps the children begin to learn to skip count by 3's. As you near the end of the month, start counting the numbers on the logs. Can the children predict the next log number?

Frog Word Walls

Every Word in it's Place and Every Frog on it's Log

Write a long word such as amphibian on the frogs and have the kids look for small words using just the letters found in amphibian.

an
in
man
hi
pin

The children write the small words on cutout tadpoles and attach them to the Frog Pond surrounding the frogs. This activity will help the children focus on the letters in the word amphibian, promote learning of high frequency words and help them learn to read and write.

Word Walls are a collection of words for children to use to promote learning in reading and writing.

There are several types of word walls that can be used in the classroom such as abc words, names, high-frequency words, word families, etc.

For the Frog Theme, brainstorm a list of Frog Words with the children. These should be words that the children might use in their writing, are difficult for them to spell and are related to the frog theme.

frog
tadpole
pond
fly
ribbit
hop
jump

See Word Walls for more ideas.

When doing the Word Wall try the Jumping Frogs Chant:

Each frog stands up tall
Say each letter in the word frog. Crouch down a bit further as you say each letter.
After you have spelled the word, jump into the air and shout out the word.

Make a bulletin board that resembles a frog pond and attach a few pocket protectors in the pond.

1. Write a capital letter on each of the frogs and insert it in a pocket protector (pool of water).

2. Write the small letter that accompanies it on the pocket protector.

3. Take out and shuffle the frogs.

4. Children match the frogs with the right part of the pool.

As the children learn the letters keep adding more pockets and corresponding frogs.

German Die Cuts have been made for over a hundred years. Few factories are still making these delightful cuts. I found these cute little frogs at the German Plaza. Make a frog themed bulletin board to illustrate fictional frogs. Contrast this bulletin board with an aquarium housing real frogs. What is it about these frogs that attracts the children's attention? How do they compare to the live frogs in the tank?

Use these die cut frogs to inspire children to write fictional tales of frogs. What would the frogs say to each other?
