Frog Fly Swatter Game
Ranked #6,314 in Education, #146,903 overall
Grab your fly swatters, the verbs are on the loose!
For this game turn your students into frogs and hand them each a fly swatter. Explain that the fly swatters are their tongues and they are hungry frogs. They can only eat the frogs that can move so they must be careful to swat only the flies with verbs on them. Verbs are the words that describe movement and motion.
Swat the verb flies such as hop, jump and leap but leave fly words such as green, slimy and fat alone. Those words are not verbs They are the dead flies with no motion.
In this game one person plays the Bullfrog who turns over the cards one by one. The others are hungry little frogs looking for a delicious meal.

If you have a difficult time finding papers shaped like flies for this game, you can make your own fly shaped papers by stamping flies on cardstock, writing on the words and then laminating the game cards. Soon the flies will be all ready for the waiting frogs.
Frog Verbs
What can frogs do?
Frogs do many things. They move in many different ways. The words that describe this movement are verbs. To make this game, stamp the shape of a fly on cards and write these verbs on each card. As you read and learn more about frogs, look for more Frog Verbs and add them to the list here as well as to the Swat the Fly Frog Game.
Would you rather be a fly or a frog?

Flies buzz around up in the air. They zip up, down and all around. Frogs hop, jump and leap. They can live in both water and on land. Imagine the life of a fly. Now imagine the life of a frog. If you could choose to be one or the other...
Butterfly Verb Cards
Frogs eat Butterflies Too!
jump, hop, leap, buzz, splash, dive, croak, sit, catch, and swat
Then we brainstormed nouns related to the frog unit study theme:
frog, fly, lily pad, water, pond, air, fly swatter, river bank,
I wrote each of these words on butterfly cards, laminated
I handed one of the children a fly swatter and they took turns swatting the butterflies that had verbs on them.
To make the game self-checking, I wrote the word verb on the back of the verbs and noun on the back of the nouns. Soon all of the children could read each of the words as well as recognize which were nouns and which were verbs.
