Literacy Bags for a Frog Unit Study

Starting about the second week of Kindergarten my daughter was given the opportunity to take home what her teacher called Story Bags or Take Home Literacy Bags. She loved them so much that I started making Literacy Bags for my classroom. They are theme-related bags with books, activities, and journals to take home and share with family members. I soon realized how much better these literacy bags were compared to traditional homework.

In this lens I will describe one of the first literacy bags that I created when doing a Frog Unit Study with my Kindergarten and First Grade Class. We began our unit study by brainstorming everything we knew about frogs. We then read a couple of books about frogs before going out to the Frog Pond to check the accuracy of our sources. When it was time to choose a literacy bag to take home for the week, the children could hardly wait to choose their homework.

Literacy Bags make homework so much fun that your children will be begging to take their homework home.

Jerry Muskrat looked over the Smiling Pool. Almost at once he saw Grandfather Frog fast asleep on his big green lily-pad. Jerry slipped down into the water and swam over to the big green lily-pad of Grandfather Frog. Then he hit the water a smart blow with his tail. Grandfather Frog's big goggly eyes flew open, and he was just about to make a frightened plunge into the Smiling Pool when he saw Jerry.

Literacy Bag Frog Journals

Writing about Frogs

As the weekend ends, the children reflect on what they have done and learned from their Frog Themed Literacy Bag. They might write about the adventures they had with Grandfather Frog, how much fun it was to make the tadpole to frog paper project or how much they enjoyed reading frog stories with Mom or Dad. The children write about their experiences in the enclosed journal which will be put in the class library after each of the children has borrowed it.

Frog and Toad Literacy Bag

FrogToad

This small Frog Lunch Bag can hold a copy of Frog and Toad a pair of Frog
and Toad dolls and a frog journal.

The children loved reading with the Frog and Toad dolls, sharing the stories with their parents and writing in the journals about the adventures that Frog and Toad had while visiting their homes. I set aside a bit of time each day when the children could share what they had written in the journals. This way the children were introduced to the available bags and began to look forward to their chance to take the Frog and Toad Bag home.

The only time I remember using frogs with language delayed kids was some wordless picture books we used to use. I can recall the names but I've seen them on Amazon. The kids thought they were hilarious.

I'll be sure to look for them. Thank you for the suggestion.

These literacy bags sort of remind me of reading baskets. Some homeschool moms gather supplies around a single theme and put them in baskets to encourage freetime exploration. Strewing is the term they use. Fun lens!
