Frogs Are People, Too!

Having written a book myself about a frog prince, and having been kissed once or twice by a princess, I decided to go out and see how many stories there are out there about a frog prince (toad princes will also be allowed). There are quite a few, though I am just scratching the surface here.

There is a certain unity of form about Frog Prince Stories, in that they are generally fairly light in tone, and by their nature take on some ideas of the mystical world of magic. Some gloss over this aspect, only marking on it in passing and in others it becomes a main theme.

In any case, it often involves the mighty brought low to teach him humility or at least good manners toward wicked witches. All are entertaining. One of the first was "The Frog Prince by the Brother's Grimm"

Below is my compendium of Frog Prince Stories.

The Frog Prince's Daughters, by Wendy Palmer

In this mystical bit of story weaving, we have a princess whose prince is nowhere in sight. A young wizard makes an appearance and attempts her demise. Instead of sitting idly by, along with her cousin, Rana and her step-mother she goes out to hunt for the prince. Wendy Palmer is from Australia and in the mode of those folk down-under stands traditional forms on their heads. The Frog Prince's Daughters is a nice addition to the genre.

The Frog Prince and Other Frog Tales from Around the World

This is a compendium of classics that include a frog in the plot in a prominent role. The book is edited by Heidi Anne Heiner of SurLaLune Fairy Tales, and it shows considerable research. Believe it or not, there are over 100 myths, legends, ballads, stories, and of course fairy tales. Besides frog princes there are frog kings, frog brides, and frog courting. I find it interesting how many of these involve romance. Ah, to be a tadpole again! The Frog Prince and Other Frog Tales from Around the World is a must for anyone interested in frogs, fairy-tales and just plain good story-telling.

Grezundl and the Frog Prince

My Own Contribution to the Genre.

Yes, I wrote this. Grezundl and the Frog Prince is the blending of two fairy tales. A young lady shut up in a tower to save her for an arranged marriage, and a young prince turned to frog who got a bit too full of himself. Try escaping from a miserable castle in the middle of a swamp, and learn a few life lessons along the way. Lots of humor for both kids and adults.

The Frog Prince, by Jane Porter

This one is set in the modern world, and I think the frog prince is more metaphor than fairy-tale. The princess is Holly Bishop, who marries a toad (I said toads were allowed). Has a fairy god-mother and is surrounded by witches who provide her competition in a new life which she escapes into. Anyway, this is the story of a woman who grows wise through life experience. Here, as in other modern fiction, we find the princess dancing the lead. The Frog Prince is geared for the female reader.
