A Thematic Unit about Frogs

Children learn best when engaged in hands-on, creative learning projects that excite and keep them focused. A frog theme lends itself to just that type of experience. Here you will find a collection of lenses leading to games, learning activities and projects all related to frogs.

Of course there are the frog books and science projects but have you ever taught frog geometry? How about Swat the Verb Flies or skip counting the frog prints in the mud?

Hop down through this lens and then jump over to the tadpole lenses that have spawned from this Frog Unit Study. You're going to have a ribbiting good time with all these frog activities...

There are so many wonderful frog stories but if I could pick only one frog fiction book I would pick one of the Frog and Toad books. Children love them, the characters are always kind to eachother and there are many themes in the stories to connect to other areas of the curriculum.

One of my children's favorite activities is to use highlighter tape (It clings but doesn't stick) to find all the words with the fr blend in them as in the word frog.

Frog Unit Study

Frog Themed Lessons

Frog Unit Study is the lesson that started it all off. With ideas from every corner of the pond this lens has been in the top 100 for nearly a year and even made it into the top 10 for about a month. Considering that there are over 750,000 Squidoo lenses, that's not bad.

In this lens there are suggested books, math activities, science and social study projects as well as art, music and physical education. Hop on over for more frog ideas than you could fit in a frog pond.

Math

My favorite Frog Math Book

Hands-on Frog Math

Frog Math

If I could only own one frog math book this would be the one. With hands-on creative activities that teach each of the math standards in a fun, creative, active way it is a must have book.

Frog Math: Predict, Ponder, Play (Great Explorations in Math & Science)

n an artful interweaving of mathematics and literature, this series of lively mathematics activities jumps off from one of the well-known "Frog and Toad" stories, "The Lost Button."

The story leads to free exploration of buttons, then sorting and classifying and a "Guess the Sort" game. Students design their own buttons and use a graphing grid to organize data.

Students also "guesstimate" the number of small plastic frogs in a jar and the number of lima beans in a handful to develop the valuable life skill of estimating.

A "Frog Pond" board game helps students develop strategic-thinking skills. The "Hop to the Pond Game" is an experiment in probability and statistics. In the newly revised guide, all grade levels play the fair version of "Hop to the Pond" with six frogs. Then grades 1-3 play the unfair version with 12 frogs.

Emphasis throughout is on student cooperation.

The California Math Council has named Frog Math as a recommended replacement unit.

Gorgeous pictures, text that is easy to understand yet factual and informative, Jim Arnosky's book All About Frogs is the very best book to own about frogs.

Taking a hint from this book I made copies of a simple outline of a frog for the children to use as they discovered different species of frogs. The children copied the markings and colored the frogs and then labeled it.

By using plastic page protectors we have turned these sheets into a frog guidebook that is added to each year. Children love to look at drawings their older brothers and sisters made years ago and work hard to find new species that have not yet been added to the book.

We have begun adding maps to the back of the pages to show where the frogs live.

All About Frogs (All About...)

Arnosky takes full advantage of the greens in his palette for this exemplary introduction.

Clear, simple text is complemented by careful, informative acrylic illustrations on every page.

From the beginning definition of an amphibian to the more esoteric fact that frogs use their eyeballs to push their prey down their throats, the careful precision of word choice makes this book both understandable to and respectful of the serious intent of young researchers.

The paintings introduce many types of frogs as they elucidate the points made in the text.

Captions indicate which illustrations are life-size, and black silhouettes clarify anatomical features.

Arnosky ends with a plea for protecting the animals' environment.

Among the many introductory books about frogs, this is one of the best.

Music

Singing a Frog Song to Start the Day

There's nothing like singing a frog song to get the day off to a good start. I make charts with the words written in large letters so that everyone can see. One little tadpole (student) is chosen each day to hold the pointer to help us all stay on track and we sing.

Sometimes we sing 5 Green and Speckled Frogs and others we might sing Gat- Goom Went the little green frog one day...

Whenever we can we use a Catnine Tail for the pointer. It is important for child to have as much exposure to nature and natural things as possible.
