I grew up in Beaufort, SC where Frogmore Stew was called, well, Frogmore Stew. It wasn't until I moved to the upstate that I realized it is called "Beaufort Stew" here. You may also hear it referred to as "Lowcountry Boil" , "Shrimp Bog", or "Shrimp Boil".

Frogmore Stew History...

frogmore-stew"Once called Frogmore Stew, this one-pot wonder was created by a National Guardsman when he needed to cook a meal for 100 soldiers. Richard Gay, who learned the recipe from his family, had everyone remembering his stew. The dish was later named Frogmore, where Richard was from, by the guards who teased him about home. The postal service eliminated the name Frogmore, which changed this popular dish to Lowcountry boil.

This seafood dish is a combination of shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. Great for relaxing trips to the beach, it is also easy to create for a crowd. Lowcountry boil can be served on newspaper for easy clean up. Crab, onion, and butter are frequent additions to the pot, and having a removable drain basket only makes cooking easier. The rule of thumb here is the bigger the crowd, the bigger the pot."

How To Make Frogmore Stew

The Way I Make Frogmore Stew

frogmore-stew

You really don't need an exact recipe to make Frogmore Stew - maybe at first but then you can just do it from habit.

I usually just fill a pot with water and season the water with enough Old Bay Seasoning to turn the water red! But, that depends on the degree of spice you want in it.

Next, I add the sliced sausage, onions and potatoes and let them get a little head start since they take the longest to cook and gives the sausage time to season the stew. Then I add the corn and cook until all ingredients are done.

Lastly, I add the shrimp and usually turn off the heat, stir the shrimp to evenly distribute them, and put a lid on it. You DON"T want overcooked shrimp! When the shrimp are pink they are done.

When I "fix" my plate, I like to shake more Old Bay Seasoning on.

And Viola! You did it! Don't forget the beer!

"Richard Gay, owner of Gay Fish Company of St. Helena Island, is credited with coming up with Frogmore Stew. It does not contain frogs. It was named after the little town where Gay lived. Then, the post office cancelled service to Frogmore and just rolled it into Beaufort. Some people now call the the dish Beaufort Stew or Low Country Boil, but the die hards will always call it Frogmore Stew."

just the name of this lens brought me here, and I enjoyed it. I've had this along the gulf coast near Brownsville, TX...where they simply called it shrimp boil. Frogmore Stew is much more intriguing.
