I love birds and I am always eager to learn of another bird. This one is interesting and the fact that they spend their lives as couples is so special. I will share it today on Valentine's Day as a sweetheart story. Thanks

This is a wonderful lens and great subject. One of these fabulous birds took up residence in my daughter's backyard recently. Congrats on Purple Star. *-*Blessed*-* and featured on Sprinkled with Stardust and also on Quiz: How Much Do You Know About Australia

Your Australian bird lenses are doing well with the purple stars. Hope to see more soon!
Some of my favorites when we lived there was the zebra finch and the galah. I liked the honey-eaters too.

I don't know if my comment went through before, but I did enjoy the video and I think your tawny frogmouth is cute. At first I did think it was a kind of owl.

Thanks for introducing the tawny frogmouth to me :). I would like to understand more how these birds, which are no owls, developed so very similar features to owls even in their voices..

Well, I have to agree with you...I don't think the Tawny Frogmouth is an ugly bird. They are most amazing in their ability to hide in their habitat. Thanks for sharing this information about them.

What a cute little bird, and it does look like an owl :) I am always fascinating with the birds of other countries, so this was very enjoyable.

Love this great lens. The Tawny Frogmouth is a fascinating creature! I am amazed at how they can "hide" in the bark of a tree. 5stars!

I haven't seen this bird before but I agree they are very cute. The feathers blend in so well with bark. These birds remind me of small hawks. Thanks for introduction to cute Australian bird. :)

I just love your tales from Australia. It's always so interesting to read and learn about wildlife indigenous to a country so far away from me. The Tawny Frogmouth does look a bit like an owl. I think it is an attractive bird! The most fascinating fact is how they use their 'camouflage' markings to hide and protect themselves. The photos of the pair against the tree bark was a perfect example -- I had to really look closely to see them hiding there! Thanks so much for telling me about a bird I'd never see or know about otherwise.

    Tawny's are gorgeous!

When I first saw this bird in your lens, I thought that it looked a lot like our small barn owl. As I read, I saw that indeed it is an owl. We have a huge owl that serenades us at night with his twoot tawoo. Do you have those too? Great 5* lens!
  • oztoo Apr 8, 2010 @ 3:01 am | delete
Actually Laraine they are not owls but are related to the nightjar family. I should have mentioned that somewhere. I'll do so shortly. We do get other owls but none that go twoot tawoo.

Oh how cute! I never heard of the Tawny Frogmouth before, and I probably would never have seen them in all that camouflage if I hadn't read about them here. Great job!
