What is a Frog?

A Scientist looks at Frogs

Let's look at toads, tadpoles and frogs. What makes these animals amphibians?

Did you know that there are over 3,900 species of tailless amphibians including the frogs and toads? What are amphibians? What does it mean to be an amphibian? Are people amphibians? Why or why not?

Amphibians

1. Zoologists classify frogs as Amphibia.
2. Scientists say that these Amphibians are poikilothermic because they are cold-blooded.
3. Frogs have skin instead of scales so they are not reptiles as some people think.
4. Most frogs and toads return to water to breed.

Frogs and toads are one of three types of Amphibians. Anura, also called Salientia, (frogs and toads), caudate (salamanders and newts) and caecilians (worm-like amphibians).

Herps and Herpetology

Amphibians together with reptiles make up a larger group called Herps. The study of reptiles and amphibians is called Herpetology. Herp comes from the Greek word herpeton, which basically means "creepy crawly things that move about on their bellies."

A herptile is an individual herp. A person who keeps and breeds herps is called a herpetoculturist and the hobby or interest in frogs is called herpetoculture.

A Unit Study is created by choosing a topic and revolving all areas of learning around that subject. In this case we will focus on frogs while learning reading, writing , math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and health. We will culminate the unit with the completion of a Frog Lapbook which will contain highlights of activities we have done throughout the frog unit study.

This Frog Unit Study has grown so large that it is beginning to grow tadpole webpages. You will find links to my other frog and frog related pages throughout this lens. Each one will connect you to more ideas and activities to extend your Frog Unit Study. Enjoy your hop back and forth throughout the frog pond of ideas.

Frog Themed Morning Message

Frogs in the Responsive Classroom

Morning Message for the Frog Unit Study

Each morning we begin with a Morning Meeting Message that draws the children into the focus of our learning about frogs for the day. As you can see from today's message we will be going down to the frog pond.

Yesterday we made binoculars from toilet paper tubes. We will use the binoculars to look for insects that the frogs might be eating. When we spy an insect we will look up the insect in our Insect Guidebooks that we made last week. The Insect Guidebooks have drawing of the insects that we have seen so far when we visit the frog pond. We have also included observations about each of the insects as well as the name of the insect whenever we have been able to find it from online research.

At the bottom of our Morning Message you will notice that there is an interactive activity. Children come in each morning and read the message to themselves and then do the activity at the bottom. We have been learning about syllables this week so today we will be associating the number of syllables in our names with the number of syllables in the calls of frogs found in our Frog pond. If your name has one syllable, write it on a post-it and place it under the Spring Peeper. Spring Peepers say "Peep", a one syllable word. If your name has two syllables, place your name under the Leopard Frog which says "ribbit", a two syllable word. If your name has three syllables, place your name under the bull frog which says "chugarum", a three syllable word.

We will later use these three groups for doing a fun, Frog Choir Song Activity as part of our Morning Meeting.

Here are a few of my favorite books on frogs, tadpoles, and other creatures that live in and around the pond. If you are just beginning to explore the frog pond, these are the books I would recommend. Which are your favorites? Do you know of another frog book that should be included here? Be sure to leave me a message below.

We read a couple of picture books each day after Calendar time and a chapter book after lunch recess. We keep track of new information we learn about frogs on a chart near the rug where we read.

Frogs

When choosing books to read aloud I look for large, clear, eye-appealing illustrations, predictable sentence structure and authentic story lines that will also teach about frogs. The stories I read in the morning are ones that can be read in just a few minutes with the idea that later children will be able to pick these books up during Silent Reading and read them by themselves.

Tales of the Frog Prince

Write your own Fairytale Frog Story

Frog Prince When Spring comes, the sunlight kisses the frog with warmth and the frog comes up out of the mud to mate and lay her eggs.

When you write about the Frog Prince, let your imagination go wild. Make up stories of frogs, describe the castles they live in and the people or other creatures they encounter. Illustrate your stories and turn them into class books.

Nothing gets children reading faster than reading stories that they themselves have written and illustrated. Think of how proudly their grandparents will be to learn that the story that they are reading about frogs was written by their grandchild.

The Frog Prince

Kiss a Frog

Kiss a FrogNo frog Unit Study could be complete without the tale of the Frog Prince. I like to have a variety of books about the Frog Prince that the children can read and compare. Frog Prince puppets help in retelling the story. Some children like to hold the Frog Prince puppet as they read the tale and turn it back and forth from frog to prince as the story progresses.

I rarely recommend movies, but the Faerie Tale Theatre: Tale of the Frog Prince is excellent. I highly recommend that you own a copy. My children watched Faerie Tale Theatre especially the Tale of the Frog Prince over and over. I like the fact that they are all done with real people playing the parts. It helps children see that they too can act out the parts in the story.

These non-fiction books are ideal for classroom libraries, in the reading nook or in literacy bags. Children love to learn real facts about frogs, toads and amphibians in general. I look for books with plenty of illustrations and easy to read print. Guidebooks often have difficult vocabulary but their predictable format makes it much easier for children to obtain information from them than you might think.

Some children are fascinated about learning the scientific names for various frogs. As a Learning Center they can make their own guidebooks by drawing pictures of frogs found in guidebooks, copying the colors and markings and then writing their common and scientific names under each frog. Some children like to use a photocopied outline of a frog or a frog stamp instead of drawing the outlines themselves.

Guidebooks about frogs usually have the common name of each frog written in bold type and the scientific name in italics. Pointing this out to children makes it easier for them to find the names. Children love sharing their guidebooks with the class and at home with their families. Consider having the children write the common names in print and the scientific names in cursive.

Sometimes we read stories about frogs just for the fun of it. Some frog stories have these little amphibians dressed in top hat and tails talking and singing to each other. Other times we are more interested in finding out the real facts about the frogs we find down at the frog pond. How can we tell if a book about frogs is fact or fiction?

Spring Peepers and Leopard Frogs Count Syllables

Peeps or Ribbits File Folder Game Center

How could the peeps and ribbits of frogs help children distinguish the number of syllables in words?

Sounds of North American Frogs

Peeps and Ribbits: Counting Syllables

Different frogs make different sounds. Go to the links below and listen to the sounds of the Spring Peeper and the Leopard Frog. During the spring, go out to the frog pond and listen to the sounds that the frogs make.

Now let's all be frogs and learn about some frog words. The words we speak have different rhythms just as the different frogs have different calls. Demonstrate to the children the difference between one and two syllable words. As a whole group practice calling out peep for one syllable and ribbit for two syllables.

Frog Syllable Quiz

Ribbits or Peeps

From WPClipart

When you listen to frog calls of different species some make a peep sound while others sound more like ribbit. We can use the rhythm of the frog calls to examine words that we are learning. If a word has one syllable it is a peep word. If a word has two syllable it is a ribbit word.

Divide your children into Leopard Frogs and Spring Peepers. Call out a word. If it is a two syllable word all the Leopard Frogs call out "ribbit". If it is a one syllable word all the Spring Peepers call out "peep".

Note: To add movement you might have the children hop to the rhythm of the word as they call out ribbit or peep.

Make your own Frog Games

Deal out the Frog Cards

Create your own frog card gameAs you learn more about frogs you can start to make up games that reinforce learning. Adapting traditional games to the theme is a great way to get started.

For example:

Frog Unit Study Concentration

1. Make decks of cards with two each of various kinds of frogs.

2. Print the names on the bottom of each card.

3. Make the cards from Card Stock. About 20 pictures per deck works well.

4.By using White Card Stock you will be able to print the frog cards without having to paste them onto stiffer material.

5. Laminating will extend the life of your decks of Frog Cards.

If you chose to print the pictures on regular printer paper you can use various colors of cardstock or oaktag, a different color for each deck, to keep the decks separated. You then will need to glue them to the cardstock.

If teaching a foreign language you could make the cards with parts of the frog's body or frogs of different colors etc,

The Amphibians Matching Card packet contains photos of amphibians in the water and on the land including green frog, spotted salamander, red-spotted eft, and more. These cards spark children's interest in the natural world and inspire them to discuss the zoological specimens they encounter in their daily life.

Name Your Frogs

A Frog by any other name would smell as sweet...

We learn from the Responsive Classroom that Name Games are important to help children get to know each other and develop community within a classroom. We have adopted these ideas when creating a community of Pet Rock Frogs.

One day we decided to name our Pet Rock Frogs. The children in my class had made Pet Rock Frogs in the art center and we were very proud of them. Here are some of the fun ways we used to learn how to read the names of our new Pet Rock Frogs. :

Frog RockFrog Name Puzzles: Letter tiles for each child's pet rock frog were put in a ziplock with a name card. The child selected a bag, put the tiles in order and copied the name on a record sheet.

Frog Name Bingo: Partners take turns choosing a stick with the name of a frog on it. They then read the name and cover that name on the Frog Names Bingo Card with a frog counter.

Pet Rock Bullfrogs: Paint fist sized rocks to look like frogs. Write the first name of a student on each bullfrog. Children match the bullfrogs to fabric lily pads that have the frog's last names on them. The children then write the full name of each frog on the recording sheet.

Make word puzzles bags by writing words on Frog shaped note paper, laminating them and putting them in zippered Ziploc Bags with the Scrabble Tiles needed to spell them. These letters for spelling frog words could also be stored in the frog tins seen below.

Kids take one bag at a time. Rearrange the letters to spell the frog word and then get another bag.

For a little harder version.

Write the frog word on the back and draw a picture showing the meaning of the frog word on the front.

Kids spell the word with the letters and then check the back to see that they were correct.

NOTE: Because Scrabble letters are all capital, I write the small letters on the back with a marker so that the children can read the words more easily.

Counting Frogs aren't just for counting!

Write words that the children are learning to spell using very large letters on card stock that have been cut in half. Children can use little Plastic Frogs to cover the letters and form the words. The children should sound out the word as they form each letter. The frog counters help the children concentrate on each letter in proper order.

Rubber Stamp Frogs can be used for stamping the path of the letters of their spelling words. Pretend that these are the paths that the frogs take to get to the frog pond. As the children stamp each letter, they can say the sound of each of the letters in the word frog.

Jo made a Feed the Frog game for her homeschooled children to help them learn sight words.

The first child picks a bug out of a bag, says the word, and feeds the word to the frog If the child did not know the word, the other child or an adult could help.

If you pair up: one child who is struggling with the words, and another who knows all of the words then the one who is struggling can get hints from the other.

If the struggler is also asked to provide hints to the one who knows the words it will help him or her to focus on the words and practice using clues to remember the words.

Jo's children children made "ribbit" sounds as the frog ate, or made the frog burp after it ate all the bugs. SheI was okay with that because she knew if the frog was full, the children's minds were growing and filling up also (burp!).

What do frogs eat?

Frogs eat...

Frogs are opportunistic carnivores. Frogs sit still and wait for the food to come to them. Dead insects are of no interest to a frog. Frogs wait for insects or small animals to fly, hop or run by. Once prey is spotted the frog flicks out its tongue and the victim is zapped into the frog's mouth almost instantly.

Frog Catching a FlyDid you know that frogs only eat prey that moves? A frog could be sitting on a log surrounded by dead flies and starve to death. The frog only notices things that move. Try watching a frog sitting on a lily pad. It will sit very still and be very alert. The second an insect flies by the frog instantly sticks out its tongue and flicks it into its mouth.

Let's turn that activity into an opportunity to practice quickly reading words! Become frogs eating flies as you learn all about verbs. Verbs are words that tell what is happening. Verbs describe movement.

Frogs hop. Frogs jump. Frogs leap. Frogs catch and eat flies.

The following online description of The Writing Process by MIT's Online Writing and Communication Center will help anyone who is teaching the Writing Process help children go from the pre-writing stage all the way through to a published book or poem.

Throughout this Frog Unit Study, use this outline to brainstorm, draft, revise, edit and finally publish the stories and poems that you will be writing about frogs. Teach this process to the children and they will be not only prepared for writing papers in college but will be prepared for writing throughout life.

Frogs and The Writing Process

Make Your Own Frog Story

Frog WritingWe use the Writing Process to teach children how to write.

Prewriting can involve going to the frog pond to observe frogs, watching the tadpoles in the classroom aquarium, drawing frogs, talking about frogs or reading about frogs.

Most people write several drafts of their frog story. Sometimes we try writing the story using different formats such as a poem, letter, short story, or newspaper article. We then share the various drafts with others in order to determine the form that works best for telling our story.

Photo Credit: Fish and Frog servants
on WPClipart, Public Domain

Once we have chosen the draft that seems to fit the story, the children begin to revise. With each revision they try to make their frog stories come alive, add intrigue and clarity to their stories. Again they share their revisions until the story pops.

Finally they edit their stories, checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation before publishing their frog tales in a format that allows them to include it in the classroom library and allows others to check these frog stories out to share with their families at home.

Choosing Words Carefully: Hop, Leap, or Jump

on Clipart, Public Domain

When writing, it is important to choose your words carefully as in the following example. Discuss with the children the difference in the meaning of the words hop, leap and jump. Have everyone get up and try each of the movements, preferably in front of a mirror. Now sing the song iHere we go Round the Mulberry Bush/i while substituting the words hop, leap and jump for different verses. Help the children feel the difference between these different words.

Now sit back down and talk about how each of these words might be used in a poem or story about frogs. Spend only a couple of minutes on this discussion before sending them off to silent writing time.

What do frogs do in the winter? Maybe they are writing poetry.

Children love to go into the reading nook to write poetry. They pretend that they are frogs in the mud, waiting for spring with nothing to do but dream of summer and write poetry.

Poetry can help people see beauty in ways they may never though of before. Could you write a poem that might help save the frogs from extinction?

Frog Poetry Contest

Announcing the SAVE THE FROGS! Annual Frog Poetry Contest!

What if you are a poet who cares about frogs? What could you do? Did you know that Amphibian populations throughout the world are declining to the point that scientists fear mass extinction? Many people don't know just how bad it has gotten for the frogs, toads and salamanders. As a poet, however, you have the ability to spread the warning. Poems are usually short and invite people to learn and recite the words over and over. Write a poem about frogs and enter it in the annual Save the Frogs Poetry Contest:SAVE THE FROGS!

Help save the frogs by raising awareness of the problem of amphibian extinction. Invite others to join you. The more people are involved and interested in saving the frogs the better the chances are that there will still be frogs here for your children and grandchildren to enjoy in years to come.

The best frog poems will be included in a book of frog poetry and the profits from the frog poetry will be used to raise money for amphibian conservation efforts. This frog poetry book will feature also artwork from the Save the Frogs' concurrent Annual Frog Art Contest.
Frog Poetry Contest | Cash Prizes
The 2011 Annual Frog Poetry Contest will open on January 15th, and run through late September.. Held by SAVE THE FROGS! Nonprofit Organization to raise funds and awareness for endangered frogs.

Frog Outlook

Persistent Frog

Keep Swimming

Persistent FrogTwo frogs fell into a deep cream bowl.
One was an optimistic soul.,
but the other took the gloomy view.
"We'll drown," he lamented without ado.
And with a last despairing cry,
He flung up his legs and said "Goodbye."

Quote the other frog with a steadfast grin,
"I can't get out but I won't give in,
I'll just swim around until my strength is spent,
then I'll die the more content."

Bravely he swam to work his scheme,
and his struggles began to churn the cream.
The more he swam, his legs a flutter,
The more the cream turned into butter.

On top of the butter at last he stopped.

What is the moral? It's easily Found. If you can't hop out, keep swimming around!

Keep observations of frog pond activities in a diary on a daily, hourly or weekly basis. These observations over time will begin to reveal the secret lives of the frogs.

Children love to help with observing and recording. After keeping a frog diary for a year or so, children love to read about what happened the year before and compare it with the activities they observe this year.

These observations can be turned into graphs, charts, dioramas or puppet shows. Be sure to take lots of pictures to add to your Frog Diary. Then add artwork, boarders and scientific drawing.

These diaries will be treasures that will be read over and over for years.

Frog and Lily Pad Game

Fish for the Magnetic Frogs on a Silk Lily Pad

Photo Credit: Frog and Lily Pad Game
on Flickr, Creative Commons.

When Melissa created the above game she used a magnetic fishing pole that she had bought at a store. She pushed tacks into the backs of the plastic frogs to make a space for the magnets to attach to and then she cut lily pads out of craft foam. The frog pond is made from a piece of silk.

The object of the game is to match, one to one correspondence, the frogs with the lily pads.

The lily pads were made in three different sizes so they could talk about the relative sizes of lily pads that the frogs land on. The first frog might land on a large lily pad and the second might land on a smaller lily pad. The third frog would then land on the smallest sized lily pad. This example brings into the discussion not only measurement but also ordinal numbers.

Finally the frogs come in a variety of colors adding another topic of discussion.

Frog and Lily Pad Games

Fish for the Magnetic Frogs on a Silk Lily Pad

Children love the Frog and Lily Pad game. There are magnets attached to the frogs and a fishing pole with a magnet on the end. The children use the fishing pole and magnets to move the frogs to the lily pads.

You could turn this activity into a literacy center by adding words to the lily pads and pictures that represents those words to the frogs. The children would then match the picture with the word.

Several species of animals, especially amphibians, depend on vernal pools to
complete their life cycles. A vernal pool is a temporary wetland that is filled by
rain or snowmelt in late winter/early spring and is typically dry by summer.
During the fall and early winter months, only vegetation will indicate the
presence of a vernal pool.

In spring, many amphibians, including spotted salamanders, Jefferson
salamanders, woodfrogs, and spring peepers, lay their eggs in vernal pools.
Some animals, such as the fairy shrimp, spend their entire lives in these pools
and must adapt to the lack of water during late summer, fall and early winter.

Being cold blooded, frogs change their activity levels to adapt to the temperatures around them. When summer temperatures get too hot they may bury themselves in the mud for protection and to rest. This is not hibernation because their heartbeats do not slow down. They continue to breathe because they can absorb oxygen through their skin even in the mud.

Most children have experienced the way that their hands become wrinkled when they are in the water for a long time. You can explain that this is similar to the way that frogs absorb oxygen through their skin.

When scientists are asked, How do frogs hop?, these are some of their answers:
Herpetology - Frequently asked frog questions
How do frogs jump so well?

Frogs are good jumpers because they have relatively long rear legs and short bodies and lack tails. The legs give them power to jump, the short body helps them withstand the impact of landing, and there is no tail to get in the way or add unnecessary weight.
Frog zoology: Encyclopedia II - Frog zoology - Locomotion
Frog zoology - Locomotion

Frogs have saltatory locomotion. This means that their primary method of locomotion is by hopping, jumping, or leaping. The front legs of a frog are similar to the arms of humans. They are weak and of little use for jumping. However, the frog has hind legs which are especially designed for leaping. These legs contain a tibiofibula (shinbone), femur, and the astragalus and calcaneus (similar to a human's ankle and heel bones). Adult frogs move about on land by hopping with their powerful hind legs.

Tadpoles, which have not yet developed arms or legs, use their tails to undulate like a fish (such as the perch).

Frog Hopping Game

Think Fun Hoppers

Bringing a new look to the classic peg solitaire game, here comes Hoppers. (Simular to Rush Hour) Since peg solitaire is a jumping game, what could be more natural than designing the pegs to resemble frogs?

Following the diagram on the card, 4 to 12 frogs are placed on the game board lily pads. Then it's time to get hopping. Frogs leap over each other until there's only one left on the board.

When play is done, frogs and playing cards can be tucked away in the nifty storage compartment beneath the game board. --Wendy Slotboom

Poppin' Hoppie Commercial

Catch a Hopping Frog

Here is a collection of old commercials for several late 1960s games from Ideal Toys, including Poppin Hoppies, Bang Box and Swack!, plus Milton Bradley's Pop Yer Top and finally, the Motorific Racerific Track set featuring the Terror Turn!

Of these commercials my favorite by far was the Poppin' Hoppies commercial. I remember thinking that this had to be the most fun game ever. Well it turned out to be more fun than you might imagine. There is a spring inside the suction cup of each frog. The idea is to push down each of the frogs in order to make the suction cup hold and then catch the frogs as the spring overpowers the suction cup and hops into the air. The child who catches the most frogs is the winner.

Frog Food Quiz

What's on the menu at the Frog Cafe?

Frogs are surprisingly picky eaters. The frog sits on the lily pad and waits. It stays still just watching for it's meal to come to him. You could place a bowl full of dead flies in front of a frog and it would starve to death. Frogs only eat insects that are moving. When a bug flies by the frog rapidly flicks out its sticky tongue and zaps it into its mouth.

Set a table to resemble a cafe. Make hard-covered menu folders and inside place worksheets with spaces for children to add insects that a frog might eat. Include a guidebook to insects. The children look up insects that would fly around near frog ponds. They choose an insect, draw its picture, write its name and explain which characteristics would make it appealing to frogs.

The Frog and Fly Game

Can the frog catch the fly?

Is it possible for the frog to catch the fly? The Frog and Fly Game is not only fun but helps children work on logic and strategy skills as well as how to take turns, play together and how to loose politely.
Puzzles in Education - The Frog and Fly Game
Can the frog catch the fly? To catch the fly, the frog has to land on the same lily pad as the fly. The frog and fly can hop from one lily pad to another that is connected to it by a line.

The frog always starts on the big lily pad at the bottom.

The frog has to move first. After the frog moves, the fly will move, and they continue to alternate moves.

Cat-O-Nine Tails last for months and can be used as pointers when reading frog poems or during Calendar Time.

Write about your tadpoles and frogs every day.

Read what others have discovered and then share that knowledge.

Build Your Own Frog Pond

Building a Pond

What better way to learn about frogs than to have your own pond. In the book, The Living Pond by Nigel Hester (below) you will find lots of scientific information, lots of pictures, activities and even directions on how to build a pond. How about having a Pond Party with some of those strong Volunteer Parents? Gather some shovels, a liner, hose, sand (for putting under the liner, stones (to hold the liner) and a couple of water plants and create your own pond. Mr. Hester suggests to wait a few weeks to add any animals. It might be interesting to instead watch to see when they come naturally.

Frogs and toads are endangered all over the world. We can help save these endangered species by providing much needed habitat.
Frogs and toads need water to live and breed, so let's invite these beautiful creatures into our backyards, school yards, parks and playgrounds by building a frog pond. What are some things to keep in mind when designing a water feature for frogs?

* Frogs and toads need to easily be able to get in and out of the frog pond. Providing logs or rocks for frogs and toads to climb onto as well as avoiding steep edges will make your frog pond most inviting to amphibians.
* Some frogs survive the winter underwater. If the water in your frog pond is several feet deep, deep enough that it doesn't freeze in the depths of winter, you will have provided for the frogs that burrow down in the mud to survive the cold months.
* Other frogs and most toads only need shallow temporary ponds for breeding, or use the shallow areas of larger ponds. A shallow pond might be safer for the children in a school playground than a deeper one. These species of frogs and toads overwinter on land where they burying themselves in softer soils or under leaves.
* Frogs and toads need plants on the side of the pond and in the shallow edges to hide in as well as for shade and to attract insects. Plant native species of aquatic plants.

Provide shelter for the Frogs:
Toad Abode
* Create a shelter for toads, sometimes called a Toad Abode, in a cool, shady part of your garden.
* During the spring and summer, amphibians seek shelter under dense leafy foliage found close to the ground.
* Leaving a pile of leaves under brush at the edge of your property will provide shelter for frogs, toads and salamanders during the cold late autumn and winter months.

on Flickr, Creative Commons.

By providing the ideal habitat you encourage frogs and toads to come live in your backyard naturally. Keep watch. Careful observation will indicate when your efforts have paid off as amphibians more into their new habitat.

Note: Do not buy frogs and toads to stock your habitat. Do not collect wild frogs, toads or tadpoles to move to your frog habitat. Allow the amphibians to find you. You will be rewarded with frogs and toads especially adapted to this new frog friendly environment and you will know that you have done something to help save the frogs.

Do not purchase frogs or toads to stock your new habitat, or move adults or even tadpoles from other wetlands to your backyard. When you have provided all that a frog or toad could want, just be patient and they will come to you.

Tallying Tadpoles
Maxell and his researchers count the number of eggs at each pond, cage the eggs, then come back later to count the number of hatchlings that resulted from those eggs. They return to get an estimate of the metamorphosed animals, and again to estimate the number of adult frogs.
A Meaningful Day: Frog Lapbooks
Tapioca can be used to simulate frog eggs.

Frogs are Oviparous Animals

Frogs Lay Eggs

Frogs aren't the only ones to lay eggs. This lens is all about egg layers including frogs. Have you ever collected frog eggs? When I was young we used to go out into the forest in the springtime to look for frog eggs. We brought a can and collected a few along with some of the pond water that the frogs had laid their eggs in. Our mother helped us to carefully transfer the frog eggs and pond water into a glass jar for observation. After a few days we could see the tadpoles start to wiggle. Eventually the tadpoles would hatch out of the frog eggs. Then we would take the tadpole back to the frog pond so that the pollywogs could grow into adult frogs.

Save the Frogs SAVE THE FROGS! is an international team of scientists, educators, policymakers and naturalists dedicated to protecting the world's amphibian species: the frogs, toads, newts, salamanders as well as the lesser-known caecilians.

We conduct and fund scientific research that directly benefits amphibian populations. We also engage in educational activities aimed at increasing the public's awareness of environmental issues to ensure that amphibian conservation becomes - and remains - a top priority for current and future generations.

About the Author of this Frog Unit Study

For the love of Frogs

I've always loved frogs since the first time my mother took me to a vernal pool to find frog eggs, take a couple home and watch them hatch. I've passed that fascination on to many children over the years including my own three children. I hope that these lessons with a frog theme inspire you to teach children about frogs.
