Frog Unit Study: Hopping to Learn
Ranked #1 in Pets & Animals, #22 overall
A Frog Theme Makes Learning Fun!
Take trips to the frog pond and become a frog as you play games, sing songs, gobble up the insect words and swat the fly verbs.
Children will remember lessons that allow them to manipulate objects, hop into some frog related math problems, and explore the mud at the bottom of the frog pond.

Amphibians
1. Zoologists classify frogs as Amphibia.
2. Scientists say that these Amphibians are poikilothermic because they are cold-blooded.
3. Frogs have skin instead of scales so they are not reptiles as some people think.
4. Most frogs and toads return to water to breed.
Frogs and toads are one of three types of Amphibians. Anura, also called Salientia, (frogs and toads), caudate (salamanders and newts) and caecilians (worm-like amphibians).
Herps and Herpetology
Amphibians together with reptiles make up a larger group called Herps. The study of reptiles and amphibians is called Herpetology. Herp comes from the Greek word herpeton, which basically means "creepy crawly things that move about on their bellies."
A herptile is an individual herp. A person who keeps and breeds herps is called a herpetoculturist and the hobby or interest in frogs is called herpetoculture.

A Unit Study is created by choosing a topic and revolving all areas of learning around that subject. In this case we will focus on frogs while learning reading, writing , math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education and health. We will culminate the unit with the completion of a Frog Lapbook which will contain highlights of activities we have done throughout the frog unit study.
This Frog Unit Study has grown so large that it is beginning to grow tadpole webpages. You will find links to my other frog and frog related pages throughout this lens. Each one will connect you to more ideas and activities to extend your Frog Unit Study. Enjoy your hop back and forth throughout the frog pond of ideas.

Make a bulletin board with a pond and plants. Put a blue Rug in the reading area with green mats or pillows for lily pads for your little frogs to sit on. Circle Time is a great way to start your day and help the children focus on Frogs as we begin this Frog Unit Study theme.Call your little frogs over and to start your day with a gentle "ribbit" sound which can be passed on from one to another until all the children reach their lily pads at which point they squat down as little frogs with big eyes watching the Big Bull Frog, you, the teacher.
Circle Time or Morning Meeting is a great way to start your day and help the children focus on the Frog Unit Study theme. Make a frog themed bulletin board with a pond and plants. Use frog cutouts to post frog words or frog math problems. Place frogs with problems on the edge of the pond. Place frogs with answers down in the mud under the pond. Children move matching frogs to lily pads on the pond's surface.
This is a fun activity to have ready for the children when they first arrive in in the morning. One of your classroom jobs could be to have someone replace the frogs at the end of the day as you are cleaning up to go home.
The Frog Pond Rug
A Gathering Place for Frogs and Toads
The Frog Pond Rug is the place to gather for Circle Time frog themed Stories, Morning Meeting and other Frog Group Activities. We greet each other with the Frog Greeting. How about singing 5 Green and Speckled Frogs or playing one of the frog games below?

Children take turns being the Five Green and Speckled Frogs sitting on the log and jumping into the pond as everyone sings the song. Others keep track of the math problems being sung by holding up sentence strips with the number problems for 5-1=4, 4-1=3 etc.
Once your children know the Five Green and Speckled Frogs song well enough, the Frog Pond Rug becomes another Learning Center where the children sing and reenact the story of the frogs jumping into the pond. They use 5 plush frogs for the activity. This is a great way for the children to practice oral language, memory recall and sequence of events besides working on math skills.
Frog Themed Morning Message
Frogs in the Responsive Classroom
Each morning we begin with a Morning Meeting Message
that draws the children into the focus of our learning about frogs for the day. As you can see from today's message we will be going down to the frog pond.
Yesterday we made binoculars from toilet paper tubes. We will use the binoculars to look for insects that the frogs might be eating. When we spy an insect we will look up the insect in our Insect Guidebooks that we made last week. The Insect Guidebooks have drawing of the insects that we have seen so far when we visit the frog pond. We have also included observations about each of the insects as well as the name of the insect whenever we have been able to find it from online research.
At the bottom of our Morning Message you will notice that there is an interactive activity. Children come in each morning and read the message to themselves and then do the activity at the bottom. We have been learning about syllables this week so today we will be associating the number of syllables in our names with the number of syllables in the calls of frogs found in our Frog pond. If your name has one syllable, write it on a post-it and place it under the Spring Peeper. Spring Peepers say "Peep", a one syllable word. If your name has two syllables, place your name under the Leopard Frog which says "ribbit", a two syllable word. If your name has three syllables, place your name under the bull frog which says "chugarum", a three syllable word.
We will later use these three groups for doing a fun, Frog Choir Song Activity as part of our Morning Meeting.

Books about Frogs for your Reading Pond

Reading Frog Bookend
Available on Amazon
Here are a few of my favorite books on frogs, tadpoles, and other creatures that live in and around the pond. If you are just beginning to explore the frog pond, these are the books I would recommend. Which are your favorites? Do you know of another frog book that should be included here? Be sure to leave me a message below.
We read a couple of picture books each day after Calendar time and a chapter book after lunch recess. We keep track of new information we learn about frogs on a chart near the rug where we read.
When choosing books to read aloud I look for large, clear, eye-appealing illustrations, predictable sentence structure and authentic story lines that will also teach about frogs. The stories I read in the morning are ones that can be read in just a few minutes with the idea that later children will be able to pick these books up during Silent Reading and read them by themselves.
Tales of the Frog Prince
Write your own Fairytale Frog Story
When Spring comes, the sunlight kisses the frog with warmth and the frog comes up out of the mud to mate and lay her eggs. When you write about the Frog Prince, let your imagination go wild. Make up stories of frogs, describe the castles they live in and the people or other creatures they encounter. Illustrate your stories and turn them into class books.
Nothing gets children reading faster than reading stories that they themselves have written and illustrated. Think of how proudly their grandparents will be to learn that the story that they are reading about frogs was written by their grandchild.

Kiss a Frog
No frog Unit Study could be complete without the tale of the Frog Prince. I like to have a variety of books about the Frog Prince that the children can read and compare. Frog Prince puppets help in retelling the story. Non-Fiction Frogs
Frogs from Eggs to Tadpoles to Adults

Storytime Frog Shelf Sitters

These non-fiction books are ideal for classroom libraries, in the reading nook or in literacy bags. Children love to learn real facts about frogs, toads and amphibians in general. I look for books with plenty of illustrations and easy to read print. Guidebooks often have difficult vocabulary but their predictable format makes it much easier for children to obtain information from them than you might think.
Some children are fascinated about learning the scientific names for various frogs. As a Learning Center they can make their own guidebooks by drawing pictures of frogs found in guidebooks, copying the colors and markings and then writing their common and scientific names under each frog. Some children like to use a photocopied outline of a frog or a frog stamp instead of drawing the outlines themselves.
Guidebooks about frogs usually have the common name of each frog written in bold type and the scientific name in italics. Pointing this out to children makes it easier for them to find the names. Children love sharing their guidebooks with the class and at home with their families. Consider having the children write the common names in print and the scientific names in cursive.

Frog Facts
Frog Facts and Fiction
Sometimes we read stories about frogs just for the fun of it. Some frog stories have these little amphibians dressed in top hat and tails talking and singing to each other. Other times we are more interested in finding out the real facts about the frogs we find down at the frog pond. How can we tell if a book about frogs is fact or fiction?

Peeps and Ribbits: Counting Syllables
Different frogs make different sounds. Go to the links below and listen to the sounds of the Spring Peeper and the Leopard Frog. During the spring, go out to the frog pond and listen to the sounds that the frogs make.
Now let's all be frogs and learn about some frog words. The words we speak have different rhythms just as the different frogs have different calls. Demonstrate to the children the difference between one and two syllable words. As a whole group practice calling out peep for one syllable and ribbit for two syllables.

Frog Syllable Quiz
Ribbits or Peeps
Photo Credit: Frogs and the Ox
From WPClipart
When you listen to frog calls of different species some make a peep sound while others sound more like ribbit. We can use the rhythm of the frog calls to examine words that we are learning. If a word has one syllable it is a peep word. If a word has two syllable it is a ribbit word.
Divide your children into Leopard Frogs and Spring Peepers. Call out a word. If it is a two syllable word all the Leopard Frogs call out "ribbit". If it is a one syllable word all the Spring Peepers call out "peep".
Note: To add movement you might have the children hop to the rhythm of the word as they call out ribbit or peep.
Make your own Frog Games
Deal out the Frog Cards
As you learn more about frogs you can start to make up games that reinforce learning. Adapting traditional games to the theme is a great way to get started. For example:
Frog Unit Study Concentration
1. Make decks of cards with two each of various kinds of frogs.
2. Print the names on the bottom of each card.
3. Make the cards from Card Stock. About 20 pictures per deck works well.
4.By using White Card Stock you will be able to print the frog cards without having to paste them onto stiffer material.
5. Laminating
If you chose to print the pictures on regular printer paper you can use various colors of cardstock or oaktag, a different color for each deck, to keep the decks separated. You then will need to glue them to the cardstock.
If teaching a foreign language you could make the cards with parts of the frog's body or frogs of different colors etc,

Product Description
Matching is a wonderful activity that develops visual acuity, memory, concentration, fine motor skills, a logical mind, and self confidence. These amphibian cards also give children the opportunity to practice speaking as they will naturally chat about the photos they manipulate.
The Amphibians Matching Card packet contains photos of amphibians in the water and on the land including green frog, spotted salamander, red-spotted eft, and more. These cards spark children's interest in the natural world and inspire them to discuss the zoological specimens they encounter in their daily life.
Name Your Frogs
A Frog by any other name would smell as sweet...
One day we decided to name our Pet Rock Frogs. The children in my class had made Pet Rock Frogs in the art center and we were very proud of them. Here are some of the fun ways we used to learn how to read the names of our new Pet Rock Frogs. :
Frog Name Puzzles: Letter tiles for each child's pet rock frog were put in a ziplock with a name card. The child selected a bag, put the tiles in order and copied the name on a record sheet.Frog Name Bingo: Partners take turns choosing a stick with the name of a frog on it. They then read the name and cover that name on the Frog Names Bingo Card with a frog counter.

Jo made a Feed the Frog game for her homeschooled children to help them learn sight words.
The first child picks a bug out of a bag, says the word, and feeds the word to the frog If the child did not know the word, the other child or an adult could help.
If you pair up: one child who is struggling with the words, and another who knows all of the words then the one who is struggling can get hints from the other.
If the struggler is also asked to provide hints to the one who knows the words it will help him or her to focus on the words and practice using clues to remember the words.
Jo's children children made "ribbit" sounds as the frog ate, or made the frog burp after it ate all the bugs. SheI was okay with that because she knew if the frog was full, the children's minds were growing and filling up also (burp!). - Arcademic Skill Builders - Word Frog

What do frogs eat?
Frogs eat...
Frogs are opportunistic carnivores. Frogs sit still and wait for the food to come to them. Dead insects are of no interest to a frog. Frogs wait for insects or small animals to fly, hop or run by. Once prey is spotted the frog flicks out its tongue and the victim is zapped into the frog's mouth almost instantly.

Frogs and The Writing Process
Make Your Own Frog Story
We use the Writing Process to teach children how to write.Prewriting can involve going to the frog pond to observe frogs, watching the tadpoles in the classroom aquarium, drawing frogs, talking about frogs or reading about frogs.
Most people write several drafts of their frog story. Sometimes we try writing the story using different formats such as a poem, letter, short story, or newspaper article. We then share the various drafts with others in order to determine the form that works best for telling our story.

Finally they edit their stories, checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation before publishing their frog tales in a format that allows them to include it in the classroom library and allows others to check these frog stories out to share with their families at home.

Choosing Words Carefully: Hop, Leap, or Jump
on Clipart, Public Domain
When writing, it is important to choose your words carefully as in the following example. Discuss with the children the difference in the meaning of the words hop, leap and jump. Have everyone get up and try each of the movements, preferably in front of a mirror. Now sing the song iHere we go Round the Mulberry Bush/i while substituting the words hop, leap and jump for different verses. Help the children feel the difference between these different words.
Now sit back down and talk about how each of these words might be used in a poem or story about frogs. Spend only a couple of minutes on this discussion before sending them off to silent writing time.
- Hop/leap/jump away - WordReference Forums
- Question: Some frogs naturally freeze solid in winter, then thaw and hop away in the spring ... Scientists believe these frogs hold the secret for safer organ transplants.I wonder if leap/jump away could substitute for hop away That is, are they the same in meaning?

Draw and read a card. Place your frog playing piece on the next tile with the correct ending. This board game reinforces spelling rules for adding -ed and -ing including doubling the final consonant or removing a silent -e. Though it is meant to be printable and played as is, I would suggest printing out the board onto card stock or gluing onto cardboard, laminating, and then cutting out the square pieces. Use the pieces on a Checker Board to create a new path each time.

What do frogs do in the winter? Maybe they are writing poetry.
Children love to go into the reading nook to write poetry. They pretend that they are frogs in the mud, waiting for spring with nothing to do but dream of summer and write poetry.
Poetry can help people see beauty in ways they may never though of before. Could you write a poem that might help save the frogs from extinction?

Frog Outlook
Persistent Frog
Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl. One was an optimistic soul.,
but the other took the gloomy view.
"We'll drown," he lamented without ado.
And with a last despairing cry,
He flung up his legs and said "Goodbye."
Quote the other frog with a steadfast grin,
"I can't get out but I won't give in,
I'll just swim around until my strength is spent,
then I'll die the more content."

Bravely he swam to work his scheme,
and his struggles began to churn the cream.
The more he swam, his legs a flutter,
The more the cream turned into butter.
On top of the butter at last he stopped.
What is the moral? It's easily Found. If you can't hop out, keep swimming around!

Keep observations of frog pond activities in a diary on a daily, hourly or weekly basis. These observations over time will begin to reveal the secret lives of the frogs.
Children love to help with observing and recording. After keeping a frog diary for a year or so, children love to read about what happened the year before and compare it with the activities they observe this year.
These observations can be turned into graphs, charts, dioramas or puppet shows. Be sure to take lots of pictures to add to your Frog Diary. Then add artwork, boarders and scientific drawing.
These diaries will be treasures that will be read over and over for years.

The object of the game is to match, one to one correspondence, the frogs with the lily pads.
The lily pads were made in three different sizes so they could talk about the relative sizes of lily pads that the frogs land on. The first frog might land on a large lily pad and the second might land on a smaller lily pad. The third frog would then land on the smallest sized lily pad. This example brings into the discussion not only measurement but also ordinal numbers.
Finally the frogs come in a variety of colors adding another topic of discussion.

Create your own Frog and Lilypad Board Game using the questions and answers from the Drops in the Bucket math series.
Drops in the bucket are one page reviews of concepts already taught. To turn these pages into a game, create a gameboard showing a frog pond. Use lily pad shapes to create a path and frog counters for playing pieces.
Cut apart the questions and glue them to cardstock. Decide on a number value of each card depending on it's difficulty or time to figure out the answer and write a number from 1 to 5 on the card. This is the number of spaces the frog can jump if you are able to answer the question corectly. Write the answer on the back of the card. Note: Answers to all questions are found at the back of the book.
Laminate
Students take turns answering questions and hopping along the lily pad path. The first one to finish is the winner.
Note: There should be at least 100 lily pad spaces to hop on.

Several species of animals, especially amphibians, depend on vernal pools to
complete their life cycles. A vernal pool is a temporary wetland that is filled by
rain or snowmelt in late winter/early spring and is typically dry by summer.
During the fall and early winter months, only vegetation will indicate the
presence of a vernal pool.
In spring, many amphibians, including spotted salamanders, Jefferson
salamanders, woodfrogs, and spring peepers, lay their eggs in vernal pools.
Some animals, such as the fairy shrimp, spend their entire lives in these pools
and must adapt to the lack of water during late summer, fall and early winter.
Invent your own Vernal Pool Mortality Game:
Make four sets of game cards represent the four stages in a frog's life cycle
Gather information about the perils of life for frogs in a Vernal Pool.
At each stage, some are eliminated (the frogs are unable to survive or are taken from the vernal pool) due to
circumstances specified in the cards.

If we had 25 tadpoles hatch on Wednesday and double that hatched on Thursday and on Friday 50 more hatched. How many tadpoles would you have by Friday? As an adult you have probably learned to ignore the frogs and tadpoles and just add up the numbers. Most children, however, have not had enough concrete experiences to make sense of such large numbers. That is where the beads come in.
We use small black and white alphabet beads to help with figuring out these problems. If you use a lot of imagination, they look like frog eggs ready to hatch.

Being cold blooded, frogs change their activity levels to adapt to the temperatures around them. When summer temperatures get too hot they may bury themselves in the mud for protection and to rest. This is not hibernation because their heartbeats do not slow down. They continue to breathe because they can absorb oxygen through their skin even in the mud.

Most children have experienced the way that their hands become wrinkled when they are in the water for a long time. You can explain that this is similar to the way that frogs absorb oxygen through their skin.

Allow the children to explore the pond. Not only do their hands also turn wrinkly but their skin is absorbing water just like a frog's skin does. When scientists are asked, How do frogs hop?, these are some of their answers:
- Herpetology - Frequently asked frog questions
- How do frogs jump so well?
Frogs are good jumpers because they have relatively long rear legs and short bodies and lack tails. The legs give them power to jump, the short body helps them withstand the impact of landing, and there is no tail to get in the way or add unnecessary weight. - Frog zoology: Encyclopedia II - Frog zoology - Locomotion
- Frog zoology - Locomotion
Frogs have saltatory locomotion. This means that their primary method of locomotion is by hopping, jumping, or leaping. The front legs of a frog are similar to the arms of humans. They are weak and of little use for jumping. However, the frog has hind legs which are especially designed for leaping. These legs contain a tibiofibula (shinbone), femur, and the astragalus and calcaneus (similar to a human's ankle and heel bones). Adult frogs move about on land by hopping with their powerful hind legs.
Tadpoles, which have not yet developed arms or legs, use their tails to undulate like a fish (such as the perch). - Jump into Spanish with Jump, Frog, Jump

The child who catches the most frogs is the winner.

Frog Food Quiz
What's on the menu at the Frog Cafe?
Frogs are surprisingly picky eaters. The frog sits on the lily pad and waits. It stays still just watching for it's meal to come to him. You could place a bowl full of dead flies in front of a frog and it would starve to death. Frogs only eat insects that are moving. When a bug flies by the frog rapidly flicks out its sticky tongue and zaps it into its mouth.
Set a table to resemble a cafe. Make hard-covered menu folders and inside place worksheets with spaces for children to add insects that a frog might eat. Include a guidebook to insects. The children look up insects that would fly around near frog ponds. They choose an insect, draw its picture, write its name and explain which characteristics would make it appealing to frogs.

Salt and Pepper frogs can be used as markers when playing board games. I like to look for the vintage frog salt and pepper shakers with unique characteristics and use their personalities to make up board games to go with them. Each salt and pepper shaker can be a playing piece on a frog pond game, a game of leapfrog or just replace the playing pieces in Checkers, Candyland or Monopoly.

How do you catch a frog?
How do you hold a frog?

Some Frog!
Available at Amazon
Children just seem to pass on the knowledge of how to catch a frog from one generation to the next. As soon as they are old enough to go down to the frog pond they watch their older siblings, cousins and friends and soon learn the techniques. Here is a wonderful photo essay on catching and holding a frog. Notice that the children's hands are wet. This is essential for the frog. Remember that a frog breaths through its skin and needs to keep its skin moist in order to breath.
I love the way the kids describe how tight to hold the frog. They say to hold it just enough to feel it breathing, gentle but firm. Have your children held a frog?

Frog Race Game
Will you be the first frog to make it to the pond ? Roll the die to determine which frog leg you have to hold onto - and then pull the frog as far forward (for green or blue) or backward (for red or yellow) until the string is pulled tight. After each pull you will be in a new position in the race and must fix the frog's legs so that both front and back legs are the same length. Roll the frog symbol and you get a free move forward. But if you roll the car symbol, this means danger so you have to take a move back. The winner is the first player to reach the pond. What Do You Learn ? Building a Frog Pond
Creating a Classroom Frog Pond
Help Save the Frogs!

Nothing replaces having a frog pond in your yard for inspiring interest in a Frog Unit Study. Frog ponds provide much needed habitat for native frogs who are endangered throughout the world. Save the Frogs suggests that we all create more frog ponds.
Build Your Own Frog Pond
Building a Pond
Frogs and toads are endangered all over the world. We can help save these endangered species by providing much needed habitat.
Frogs and toads need water to live and breed, so let's invite these beautiful creatures into our backyards, school yards, parks and playgrounds by building a frog pond. What are some things to keep in mind when designing a water feature for frogs?
* Frogs and toads need to easily be able to get in and out of the frog pond. Providing logs or rocks for frogs and toads to climb onto as well as avoiding steep edges will make your frog pond most inviting to amphibians.
* Some frogs survive the winter underwater. If the water in your frog pond is several feet deep, deep enough that it doesn't freeze in the depths of winter, you will have provided for the frogs that burrow down in the mud to survive the cold months.
* Other frogs and most toads only need shallow temporary ponds for breeding, or use the shallow areas of larger ponds. A shallow pond might be safer for the children in a school playground than a deeper one. These species of frogs and toads overwinter on land where they burying themselves in softer soils or under leaves.
* Frogs and toads need plants on the side of the pond and in the shallow edges to hide in as well as for shade and to attract insects. Plant native species of aquatic plants.
Provide shelter for the Frogs:

* Create a shelter for toads, sometimes called a Toad Abode, in a cool, shady part of your garden.
* During the spring and summer, amphibians seek shelter under dense leafy foliage found close to the ground.
* Leaving a pile of leaves under brush at the edge of your property will provide shelter for frogs, toads and salamanders during the cold late autumn and winter months.
on Flickr, Creative Commons.
Note: Do not buy frogs and toads to stock your habitat. Do not collect wild frogs, toads or tadpoles to move to your frog habitat. Allow the amphibians to find you. You will be rewarded with frogs and toads especially adapted to this new frog friendly environment and you will know that you have done something to help save the frogs.
Do not purchase frogs or toads to stock your new habitat, or move adults or even tadpoles from other wetlands to your backyard. When you have provided all that a frog or toad could want, just be patient and they will come to you.

- There are so many inspired ways of teaching in this I am unsure which to single out, I think it has to be the syllable learning with the peep and ribbits. Really well thought out and brilliant for child interaction. Excellent article. With thanks and appreciation. Cathi x

- I participated in a frog anatomy class when I was young and all I can remember is how horrible the frogs smell from the formaldehyde. I think the idea of using computers to replace frog dissections in Biology Class is a good idea. LOL

- i tasted frog legs for the first and the last time because the poor frogs have little meat in their skinny legs. you need thousands of frogs to get a real meal. i enjoy watching them swim in the creek and listen to them although they are so looooooooud in the evening. angel blessings.

- I love frogs and this lens! I've had African Dwarf frogs in the past and when I buy dog food at the pet store, I always stop by to visit the frogs.
It was fun taking quizzes. (I don't think "what do frogs eat?" i scoring correctly.) Thank you!

- Great lens. I grew up with a fear of frogs and think that had I had any of these experiences as a child, things would have been different. You have presented so many ways for teachers to help kids learn about frogs and develop an appreciation for them. Gave you a Squidlike.

Which kind of frog ring do you like best? There are the frog rings that you wear on your finger and there are the frog webrings where more and more frog lovers share their knowledge of frogs? Better yet, why not go for both? Wear your frog ring on your hand to show how much you love frogs when you encounter people in person and then write about frogs on Wizzley then link your frog themed Wizzley or Squidoo lens on a frog themed webring. The more links in the chain the better.
