Welcome to the Abbey! Catholic Moral Theology and the Joy of Truth

From the Abbey is a Catholic educational apostolate. That sounds really important (which is why I like to say it), but in reality it's just the name I give to my work as a Catholic educator.

The apostolate includes an educational website at www.fromtheabbey.com, a blog (www.fromtheabbey.com/Study/blog.html), a self-published textbook and curriculum in moral theology (a work in progress), educational programs for parishes and Catholic groups, and an online Catholic bookstore at www.fromtheabbey.net. It keeps a stay-at-home father busy.

From the Abbey Squidoo Lenses

My educational mission has now extended to Squidoo! How could it not? Below are lenses that I have written on moral theology, and some that are "on the writing desk."

What's Natural About Natural Law? An explanation of the natural moral law.

To Love is Divine The Divine Law teaches us to love God and neighbor.

Natural Law: Becoming More Human - Natural law guides us to use all of our faculties in order to live more human lives.

Who's Who in the Abbey

The following are fictional characters on www.fromtheabbey.com. Any resemblence to actual religious brothers is completely accidental. Any resemblence to actual saints is completely intentional.

The educational website at www.fromtheabbey.com is the main hub of activity for my apostolate. My work is supported by a number of "religious brothers" who run "The Abbey."

Brother Martin is the doorkeeper of the Abbey. He greets visitors at the front door and helps in the office. Brother Martin is outgoing and loves to be around people, making him the perfect person to greet visitors to The Abbey.

Brother Thomas is The Abbey's main teacher. He hangs out in the classrooms and in his study. Brother Thomas tends to be quiet and reflective, but he is also very warm - which makes him a great teacher.

Brother Jerome is The Abbey's librarian. He also hosts the bookstore. Brother Jerome is a little absorbed and isn't as good with people as the other brothers. Don't let that intimidate you, though. He's really a nice guy.

The Rooms of the Abbey

From the Abbey's educational website at www.fromtheabbey.com is divided into "rooms." Each room in the Abbey represents a unique collection of articles or educational tools. Eventually each room will have its own artwork.

The Abbey Office

The office takes care of the "business" of the Abbey. You can read about the work of the apostolate and the history of the idea for the Abbey. You can also donate to our work (sorry, not tax-deductible) and sign up for our eNewsletter.

The Abbey Classroom

The Classroom is designed for interactive learning. It contains interactive (mouse-over) diagrams and study guides for Church documents. Eventually it will also include short online lectures and more interactive options.

The Abbey Bookstore

Our online bookstore is small (just over 400 items), but built on customer service. You can read my Squidoo lens about the Bookstore for more information.

The Abbey Library

The Abbey Library is the text-intensive part of the site. It contains general articles about moral theology in "Moral Theology in a Nutshell" and about specific moral issues in "Living the Devout Life." It also houses reading lists and a glossary of terms.

The Abbey Study

The Study is the place to find Gaudium Veritatis, our moral theology blog (see below). When the Dear Brother Thomas textbook and curriculum in moral theology are finished, I will also put descriptions and supporting material for them in the Study.

The Abbey Amphitheater

The Amphitheater will soon contain the educational programs that I offer to parishes and groups within the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin. I may even post some sample video!

The rooms below don't have content in them yet, but great ideas await!

The Abbey Workrooms

This is one of the rooms still under construction. I plan to house interactive artwork here based on themes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Bible.

The Abbey Chapel

Oi Vey! Another room under construction? I can't wait for this one to get going, though. The chapel will have interactive and downloadable demonstrations for praying our own "Reflective Rosary" as well as other prayers of the Church such as the Angelus and Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

The Abbey Cafeteria

The Cafeteria should be completed soon as well. This will be a place to meet and to discuss with other Catholics (and non-Catholics). It will include our own forum (and other social communication tools), as well as links to the best Catholic forums on the web.

The Abbey Hall of Heroes

The Hall of Heroes will have short presentations of saints who taught and/or lived the moral life heroically. Ideas are still flowing for this room.

Visit us at the Abbey, and add this lens to your favorites so you can receive updates as the Abbey grows!

Gaudium Veritatis

Our moral theology blog is found in the Study

Gaudium Veritatis (Joy of the Truth) applies moral principles to current events and encourages clear thinking about moral principles.

The blog has been moved to a new system, and with the new system comes a new advertising venue. I now choose which companies and products show up on my blog, using the Commission Junction affiliate program.

Hi, just came across your fromtheabbey website. I was looking at the blog threads and came across some advertising-courtesy of Google-that seems inconsistent with your message. Under homosexuality I found "Meet Gay Singles". Under chastity I found "polygamy personals". Under Help help I'm being repressed (very funny btw) I found "Female pleasure at great prices". As a theology teacher at a Catholic high school, I was concerned. Please respond to goldendome1984@yahoo.com
Thanks!
