Welcome to the Abbey! - Online Catholic Bookstore

From the Abbey is my Catholic educational apostolate dedicated to helping Catholics discover the joy that comes with discovering truth, especially the moral truth taught by the Catholic Church.

The From the Abbey Online Bookstore is a small but growing bookstore. I carefully review every book before I add it to my inventory (or at least make sure it is reviewed by a trusted source). I write reviews for as many as I can, adding more reviews as time allows. I plan to post those reviews as lenses on Squidoo.

The bookstore is part of the mission of my apostolate. My goal as my inventory grows is to have the bookstore include the most solid in mainstream Catholic publishing, and the best in less popular but no less valuable offbeat titles.

Our Crazy New Idea

We are looking to purchase a 16'-18' long by 8' high cargo trailer, install book shelves and create a portable bookstore! Of course, we'll need some financial help to see this dream come true, but we are confident God will help us. A mendicant bookstore - traveling and begging - ha! Now for a name . . . "The Wandering Abbey"?

Why Should I Buy From the Abbey?

Top reasons to choose From the Abbey Online Bookstore over the big guys.
  1. You get direct access to the book seller (me!)
  2. You support a bookstore that supports Squidoo!
  3. Your money goes to support the work of the From the Abbey educational apostolate
  4. I work really hard to make my customers happy
  5. I will track down any Catholic book you are looking for, even if I can't sell it to you myself
  6. Our online bookstore has helpful tools like gift lists for every sacrament

Catholics Have to Read!

The Mission of the From the Abbey Online Bookstore

I strongly believe that reading, writing and thinking are critical aspects of the Catholic intellectual life and of our mission to bring the Gospel into the world. Without the ability to intellectually engage ideas, we all too easily fall for the half-truths and misconceptions that mark our current cultural discourse.

Reading engages the mind with ideas in a way that watching videos or even listening to lectures cannot.

Writing clarifies your own thoughts and proposes them to others for evaluation.

Thinking critically helps you to analyze ideas and claims to truth to see if they are valid. It also helps you to judge your own thinking.

The goal of all of this is to help us to find the truth. Human beings are created for the truth, and all truth comes from God our Creator. The pursuit of truth is a good thing. Furthermore, exercising clear thought is the only way we can hope to convince society of the truth about human life and important moral and spiritual truths.

I am constantly astonished by how many Catholics tell me that they don't read. It is equally amazing how few Catholics cannot articulate the reasons that abortion is evil (besides "the Church teaches it's wrong" or "the Bible says so").

From the Abbey exists to encourage Catholics to think and grow. Our bookstore makes finding good Catholic reading easy. Please - find a good book and enter into the discussion!

Our Featured Books

This is not just a random list of showcased books. These are the books that have been judged the best by my network of readers, educators and home schoolers.

  • Divine Pity
by Rev. Gerald Vann - Father Vann uses the beatitudes as a springboard for a discussion on living the Divine Life as fully as possible. He identifies the subtle ways that Christians fail to fully live out the beatitudes, the virtues and the life of love. The social implications of the Beatitudes (the subtitle of the book) comes in with Father Vann's persistent theme that we do not exercise the Christian life in a vacuum, but within a family.

  • Embraced by Mary
by Rawley Myers - a devotional filled with reflections written by Father Rawley Myers. It includes devotions for every memorial and feast day connected to Mary, and each Saturday of the month. Reflections are offered for every day of the two great Marian months - May and October.

  • Four Witnesses
by Rod Bennett - What was the early Church like? Contrary to popular belief, Rod Bennett shows there is a reliable way to know. Four ancient Christian writers-four witnesses to early Christianity -left us an extensive body of documentation on this vital subject, and this book brings their fascinating testimony to life for modern believers. With all the power and drama of a gripping novel, this book is a journey of discovery of ancient and beautiful truths through the lives of four great saints of the early Church-Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyons.

  • Friendly Defender Cards
by Matthew Pinto and Katherine Andes - Flash cards to teach about the Catholic faith. On one side of each card is a question that a sceptic might ask. On the flip side is a solid answer to the challenge. Illustrated with colorful characters.

Our Mission

We want to bring you the joy of the truth by making the best of Catholic thought, writing and teaching available to you. Read, think, write, act.
