What is that Smell? Not My Washing Machine? Is it?

Okay so last May after are renter destroyed our home and the things we owned while we were stationed else where...We decided that we needed new appliances since they were beyond use now. Well we went with the energy efficient front load washer and dryer since they Well duh, were more energy efficient and the front load washer used less water.

Well I loved the washer and had been doing laundry like crazy since the move back and a friend of the family gave my girls 5 bags of clothes. Well finally all caught up on the laundry the machine was not being used daily.

Well about 5 days I noticed the smell of mildew in my laundry room. I am very allergic to mold so I went into defense mode. Seek and Destroy. Well I cleaned the floor, the walls, the laundry baskets and all around my washing machine.

Well this morning I went to do a load of clothes that I had finally and I opened the washing machine, an about passed out. I was hit in the face with the most awful smell of mold. I freaked, crap, now what. What the heck was going on why does my brand new washing machine smell like Mold? Dang it.

So I thought maybe I'm just being crazy so I throw in the load and ran upstairs, grabbed my lap top and hit google. I googled " My front Load washing machine smells like MOLD." I was floored the page lite up with post after post of the same problem. And it was a huge problem. People were battling this problem, cleaning, bleaching, buying special detergents, and even ripping the whole damn thing apart to find out they were filled with mold.

Crap I thought now what? Now email my Hubby tell him he has a project. Go into Defense mode, I went down stairs wrapped my face with a towel this time opened up the load that was already going took the clothes out and sprayed down the rubber seal inside and out with bleach. Put in about 4 cleaning towels, loaded the bleach fill with about 3 or 4 cups of bleach, the detergent with the normal amount, set the washer to sanitize and stepped out.

Well I also found out after your done with your loads, you are to leave the door open for the Machine to dry out, who knew not me. Well I will from now on and I will have to leave my laundry room closed since I have a little curious kid in the house. I think they should tell you that when you buy the darn thing I would have done it from the beginning. But who's to say that would have helped since I read all these other people with this same problem. Did they know? Who Knew. Not me...

Well I have learned a lesson here maybe energy efficient isn't always better when it comes to your health. So my Hubby will be cleaning and I will be watching out for it again. I hope after the cleaning and the bleaching along with leaving the door open the problem with resolve.

Mildew refers to certain kinds of mold or fungus. In Old English, it meant honeydew (a substance secreted by aphids on leaves, formerly thought to distill from the air like dew), and later came to mean mildew in the modern sense. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 1969, entry "melit-" in Appendix

*The term mildew is often used generically to refer to mold growth, usually with a flat growth habit. Molds can thrive on many organic materials, including clothing, leather, paper, and the ceilings, walls and floors of homes with moisture management problems. Mildew often lives on shower walls, windowsills, and other places where moisture levels are high. There are many species of molds. In unaired places, such as basements, they can produce a strong musty odor.

*What horticulturalists and gardeners often refer to as mildew is more precisely called powdery mildew. It is caused by many different species of fungi in the order Erysiphales. Most species are specific to a narrow range of hosts, and all are obligate parasites of flowering plants. The species that affects roses is Sphaerotheca pannosa var. rosa.

*Another plant-associated type of mildew is downy mildew. Downy mildews are caused by fungus-like organisms in the family Peronosporaceae (Oomycota). They are obligate plant pathogens, and the many species are each parasitic on a narrow range of hosts. In agriculture, downy mildews are a particular problem for growers of potatoes, grapes, tobacco and cucurbits.

The English word was exported into French as mildiou and as mildiu in Spanish.
