Frugal and Family Friendly Recipes

In this lens I am sharing very frugal recipes. Recipes that are approved and welcomed by my own family. I hope you will give them a try and get the approval of your family as well.!

I've also included links to several of my gather posts where I share budget meals that we ate. I hope you will enjoy and know that you don't have to spend a fortune to eat well.

Hamburger Stew

My mom started making this years ago and it's one of our family favorites. It costs very little to feed our crew.

Hamburger Stew

1 lb ground beef (we use ground turkey)
1 can tomato soup
1 can vegetable soup or 1 can of mixed vegetables.

Cook and drain the ground meat.
Add the can of tomato soup and the can of vegetables.
Add water to consistency you desire. That's it!

We serve this over toast. If we have shredded cheese available we can top it off with that.
All you really need to do it add a dairy and your fruit for a balanced meal. It's simple and very inexpensive to fix.
We choose to use ground turkey at our house over ground beef. It's cheaper and it's healthier. Whether we use the vegetable soup or the mixed vegetables depends on what we have in the house at the time.

We serve 8 or 9 of us on this one recipe, which leaves everyone wanting more so I would say it serves 4. You can add rice or cooked pasta to make it stretch even further.

Chicken with Carrots and Gravy

Here is another one of our family favorites. I don't remember if someone told me to make this or if I just threw it together.

Chicken with Carrots and Gravy

1 lb boneless chicken breasts
1 can carrots, drained
2 cans or jars of chicken gravy.

I cook 3 lbs of the boneless chicken breasts in the crockpot at a time as they are sold in the 3 lb bags frozen. I then cube and divide it, using 1/3 for this recipes and freezing the other 2/3 seperately for other meals.

Once the chicken is cooked and drained, top with the can of carrots and the 2 jars or cans of chicken gravy. Cook in the crockpot long enough for the carrots and gravy to heat.

We serve this over mashed potatoes.

Like I said, it's quick, easy and cheap, but it's also very filling.

Tuna Casserole

Simple and cheap and this is a family favorite for sure!!

1-6 oz. can tuna-drained
16 saltine crackers-crushed
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk

Mix together, pour into a greased baking dish. Bake at 350ยบ for 30 minutes. Serves 3-4. ( mom says 8 minutes in the microwave for single batch and 15 minutes for double batch, but in the microwave the edges get hard)

I like to put margarine over the top to melt right as it comes out of the oven. We usually always serve this with canned carrots and pineapple.

Is that easy or what? And, I am telling you, no one around here can ever get enough and company has always raved about it. When we make this we have to at least double the recipe if not triple it.

My mom used to make tuna casserole with the crackers on top with noodles. I love tuna and this sounds so good as does your Beef Stew (on toast with cheese sound yummy) and you Chicken with Carrots and Gravy. I have a very frugal lifestyle and with today's prices things are getting even tighter. Thanks Marsha.

I try to not waste any food I buy. I use all edible parts and try to stretch it as much as I can.

Yes, we have to cook real frugally. My daughter moved in with her 2 children and our family went instantly from 2 to 5. I make 1 can of tuna feed the whole family. Now that we are all diabetics except 1, I have to watch that, too.

Yes! I grew up in Scotland where "thrifty" is the desired characteristic, so frugal living comes naturally. I also enjoy simple but tasty food - and your recipes look exactly that!

I suddenly found myself disabled at the young age of 26. I was then a single mom in college, and wow, it definitely taught me to how to live to the best of my abilities on virtually nothing. Great article.
