Full Figured Icon: Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe

Photograph: V Magazine
"I did not grow up as an unhappy ugly girl who was unpopular in school. I like myself, and I don't have a problem with the way I look or my weight. I'm fine with it."

"As Claireece 'Precious' Jones, the obese, abused, 16-year-old hero of Precious (based on the sexually graphic 1996 novel Push, by Sapphire), the 26-year-old actress gives one of the most moving and primal performances in recent memory." -New York Magazine

That's pretty incredible praise for any actor, newcomer or not, and makes us think that Sidibe has quite a future ahead of her. Want to know more? Here are a few places to learn about Gabby Sidibe:

Full Figured Icon: Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah was born Dana Owens in Newark, NJ (March 18, 1970). She was not the first female rapper, but she was the first one to become a real star, and she paved the way for the women rappers who followed. Today she's known for more than her music (which now includes other genres in addition to rap), having won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe award, written a book, started a foundation, and so much more.

Queen Latifah's Astrology and Birth Chart

Queen Latifah was Michael Kay's guest on CenterStage (on YES, the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network). During the hour-long interview (watch it if you can!) she spoke about many topics. This is one:

On how her name came to be "Queen Latifah"...
"Well, "Queen" came about because I started rapping. And, my first single, it doesn't say Queen Latifah, it says Latifah, I hadn't totally decided what my name was going to be, but when it came time for me to sign my, my long form contract, I had a single deal, but when it was time to really do a album deal with my label I had to pick a name that I wanted to be professionally known as. And I had been kicking a few things around and, there was "MC this," and "so and so the MC," and I just kinda wanted to be different from everyone. I kept thinking of different things, and Queen came to mind. One, because my mother raised me that all women are queens and should be treated as such. And also, there was a lot going on in South Africa at the time with apartheid and it just felt like the right name, Queen Latifah, so that's what I chose. I ran everything past my crew, they liked the idea of it and so I went with it."

Plus-Size Wars

The New York Times Magazine 07.29.2010

By GINIA BELLAFANTE

Earlier this year, the editors of V, a magazine so recherché it can make Vogue seem like Redbook, published an issue featuring large models in expensive body-baring clothes. In one photograph, a woman in a strapless bathing suit, cut to reveal three rolls of flesh, grabs at her platform stilettos. In another, Tara Lynn, a size 16 model, is clad in nothing but a pair of Dior sandals.

Mainstream fashion magazines have always purported to embrace diverse images of the female body, publishing periodic "shape" issues that juxtapose the thin and very thin with the moderately fleshy. But only in the last year or so have notably larger women been released from the fringes, appearing not only in magazines and on television but also in the more rarefied world of the runway, including a Chanel show in St.-Tropez this spring. This shift dates, more or less, to last fall, when Glamour ran a small picture of a 5-foot-11, 180-pound model comfortably exposing her paunch. So unusual was the appearance of belly fat in this context that the magazine received thousands of letters and comments, most of them roaring with support. The model, Lizzie Miller, appeared on the "Today" show and was profiled in The Guardian.

The right undergarments are essential

if you are full-figured, wearing the right size is especially important

About 70% of women wear the wrong size bra. If it's been more than two years since you had a bra fitting, it is time to get refitted. And no matter when you had your last bra fitting, if you experience any of the following signs, your bra definitely doesn't fit you properly:

*your bra hurts (bras should be comfortable)
*the cup puckers
*the center of the bra doesn't lie flat against your breastbone
*the bra straps dig into your shoulders or slip off your shoulders
*you have bulges on the top or sides of the cups
*the bra rides up in the back

Style and fit are the two key considerations in choosing the right bra. Better department stores often have professionals who can fit you and familiarize you with the different brands and styles. In some areas it's possible to find stores specializing in undergarments where the staff can fit you. Take advantage of these resources if they're available to you.
