Digital Infrared Phothography
Stunning alternative views!
Your digital camera can do way more than what we usually think! Indeed, cameras can capture what the eye can't perceive like infrared light!
Digital infrared photography is a great technique to create distinctively dreamlike, high-contrast pictures. It opens a new world of unique creative possibilities and it is an increasingly popular medium!
Infrared photography uses infrared light to create unique artistic views to create false-color or black-and-white images with a dreamlike images showing the "Wood Effect", an effect caused by foliage reflecting infrared light in a similar fashion visible light is reflected by snow.
The part of the spectrum used is referred to as near-infrared to distinguish it from far-infrared - used in thermal imaging. Wavelengths used for photography range from 700nm to 900nm. Infrared filters are used to let infrared light pass through to the camera, blocking all or most of the visible light spectrum (the filter thus looks black/deep red).
The effect is named after the infrared photography pioneer Robert W. Wood.
A feature of infrared photography is the penetration of atmospheric haze, caused by reduced Rayleigh scattering and Mie scattering that is often noticeable using visible light. These wavelengths also penetrate a few millimetres into the skin and give an interesting milky look to portraits.
The possibilities offered by this photographic technique are endless. With a little dedication and a minimal knowledge of digital editing, you can create your unique picture in no time!
Here you will find all the references and links to get started and become a pro in infrared photography!
All you need to start with digital IR
It's easy, a filter and you're good to go!
To start having fun with digital IR photgraphy all you need is a filter! I've selected few among the most used. Be sure to select the right size for your lens! Additionally, I selected one of the best guides. I personally found it a great resource to get started with this amazing technique. Don't forget to share with us your results!
If you are unsure on what filter better suits your artistic side, read here: Choosing the right filter.
If you want to achieve the best results with this technique and want to modify your camera there are several options. You can get a full spectrum camera like mine, or you can decide for a certain filter depending on the results you want to achieve.
If you live in the US, I recommend LifePixel and MaxMax.
If you live in Europe, although a bit on the pricey side, the best place is Optik Makario.

Abstract photography
What you feel instead of what you see.
Abstract photography is not about about using a camera to represent something, but to create a feeling or a sensation through the use of shape, colour, texture, light and shadow. My personal creation is simple. The rim of a glass bowl. The curvy line, the small defects of the glass, the diffused colour of the wooden table. It all contributes to provide a feeling of elegant simplicity. What's your best abstract shot?

HDR Photography
Can you do better?
If you have ever photographed a high contrast scene, you know that even a good exposure will typically have blown out highlights and flat shadows. The solution is High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography processing. Don't be scared, it's very simple!
- Take multiple photographs at varying exposure levels
- Merge the photos into an HDR image that reveals highlight and shadow details
- Adjust the settings to get the look you want: from natural-looking with Exposure Fusion to painterly or surreal with Tone Mapping!
Here I uploaded an example. It's not my best HDR so far on purpose. I challenge you, can you do better? Show it to us!

Water Droplets
A simple idea
One simple idea to get amazing shots is to add water in your pictures. Despite most of the good shots around are done using a specific setup with expensive lighting systems, you can achieve astonishing results with little effort. My pictures for example is nothing more than a macro shot of some droplets falling down the sink. Try and show us what you did!

How to Photograph water droplets
It couldn't be easier!
Water droplets pictures are very suggestive and you might think it hard to achieve good results. Lucky you, it couldn't be easier!
All you need is:
- a glass bowl;
- some water;
- a white sheet of paper as background
- a camera with macro function (every point and shoot camera has it these days!).
This is my setup. Remember, these are simple recommendations. To achieve different results, use a coloured sheet of paper as background or use coloured liquids to create unique shots!

Light Painting Gallery
Another punchy technique!
Light painting, also known as light drawing or light graffiti is a photographic technique in which exposures are made usually in a darkened room by moving a hand-held light source. The term light painting also encompasses images lit from outside the frame with hand-held light sources. The first known photographer to use this technique was Man Ray in his series "Space Writing" created in 1935.

Shocking shots
Pushing the boundaries, good or bad?

One trick often used by artists all over the world to leave a mark is to show things people don't want to see (but in the end they do). Probably the most famous example is Body Worlds (German title: Körperwelten), developed by the German anatomist Gunther von Hagens. I frankly don't dare to go that far, but my picture of a Ixodes spp. is a clear example of a shocking picture. What do you think?
