What Are Lace Front Wigs?

Lace front wigs are wigs that are applied to the head and look natural in every way you would look at them. They are more secure than regular wigs and can cover up either a non-existent hair line or bald head without drawing attention.

It used to be a secret of celebrities but is available for the average person.

They are made out of human hair and are usually from a single donor so you don't have mixed hair types on one wig. Lace front wigs have a distinct advantage over other wigs in that you can still have your hair underneath the wig itself if you flatten your hair as much as possible, and this is usually achieved by close braiding.

They are designed to be worn for weeks at a time, and you can do virtually anything you would normally do to your own hair such as wash and sleep in it. You could even give it a perm. It's essentially a second set of hair for you and as long as you care for it properly, you will have it for a very long time.

The wigs are designed to be attached by either specialized tape or glue. There are different strengths of bonds depending on how long you wish to keep your hair on, and the durability can range from a single day to months.

Most people conservatively estimate that the wig will last anywhere from 3 months to a year, but in reality your wig will last you as long as you care for it properly. Of course, it will degrade, but you could see years of use.

Caring For a Lace Front Human Hair Wig

Caring for your wig is a lot of common sense mixed with apparent instructions from the wig supplier. Since you're caring for real hair, you should consider using the same treatment you would expect for your hair.

You wouldn't let your hair go without getting washed every once in a while - most people usually wash their hair every day. Handling the hair gently is also essential in the care of your wig.

Being very careful with your wig will mean you have it for many months to come. Unlike the hair that grows from your scalp, you'll have to take extra care of its scalp (the lace mesh that your hair is woven into) because that is what holds your hair together.

Once that mesh is damaged or destroyed, it's only a matter of time before you'll need to get a new one. Also, you have to use the right products for your lace front wig. You can't expect to go get some substandard adhesive and expect your hair to be okay.

Also, doing off-the-wall things to your hair is probably out of the question, such as friction teasing and bleaching. Both of these can damage not only your hair but also the lace front wig. Essentially, you'll want to shampoo and condition your hair regularly and take all of the knots out.

Don't just yank on the hair, you'll have to be gentle - maybe even extra gentle - so you do not risk damaging the wig. Every supplier of lace front wigs will have detailed instructions on how to care for the wig, but if you think about the care of your own hair then you'll have most of the job already figured out.

How to Put On a Lace Front Wig the Right Way

Putting on a lace front wig can be tricky but it is a great way to have fabulous hair in a short time. For a little bit of effort you could have months of wear out of one adhesive session. Applying the wig carefully will allow you the extra confidence you deserve.

First, and foremost, you should clean the area that is going to hold the mesh. While you're cleaning this area, you might as well clean your face. Probably getting a good scrub that will remove blackheads and clear your pores is a must.

Having a fresh, clean surface will let the wig stay glued or taped on for longer than you might expect. Second, you have to decide what you're going to do with your natural hair. If you have none, then this is pretty much easy.

If you do have hair, then you need to flatten it as much as possible. You could, for example, get a really close braid that will keep your hair in place or you could just shave it all off. Next, decide on whether you're going to use a cap or not.

A skull cap is usually provided so you can protect your hair from any glue or tape that might have to be used, but if you prefer your hair to be the base then that is your choice. Most prefer to use the cap.

Finally, apply the adhesive to the mesh and attach to your scalp, closely following a natural hair line. Be careful as you apply the wig because once you have applied it, you will be required to use special remover to fix it if you need, and then you should probably wait at least 24 hours to let your skin rest.

After you apply, you must let it dry thoroughly before doing anything that requires sweat or getting your head wet. After this initial 24 hour period passes, then you can pretty much do anything with your wig that you would do with your natural hair.
