What is LED TV

The competition between LCD and plasma TVs is ongoing, but a new contender has entered the ring. The LED TV has come into the frame and thanks to the advertisers is enjoying more than its share of time in the limelight. But is the hype surrounding this new technology deserved?

Whilst the improvements that have come LED TVs available to be judged with the viewers eyes, the criticism has been that the name could be considered slightly misleading. LED TVs are still basically LCD TVs with one major difference - the use of LEDs to provide the backlighting rather than the fluorescent lights that were previously used.

Fluorescent lights have two inherent problems, firstly their performance degrades over-time becoming dimmer and secondly they can fail completely (when they do fail they are difficult and sometime not cost effective to replace).

The use of LEDs has overcome the problems of fluorescent lights because LEDs are said to be more reliable, having a longer life and not suffering degradation in performance. Other benefits that the use of LEDs brings are that because of their size being less bulky, super-slim TVs can now be made. Also the light produced by LEDs is said to produce brighter and more intense pictures. Another feature is LED TVs consume less power and so are the eco-friendly option.
