Full Time Living RV Life

Full time living rv style is a unique way of living. Life in a small aluminum box is different than living in a larger site built home. Even the smallest efficiency apartment is probably larger than the rv we live in now. Why do we do it when we had a nice comfortable home in the suburbs of Denver to spend our retirement days?

Is It Possible To Enjoy Full Time Living In A Small RV?

How to thrive in a small space...

Full time living rvs are found in all size ranges. Some people are very comfortable in a 16 or 20 foot travel trailer and other people just can't find enough room in the 45 foot motor coaches. It all depends on your personal outlook on what is necessary for your comfort and convience.

We live in a 27 foot fifth wheel trailer. It is small by most full time living rv standards but Shirley and I are doing just fine, thank you. She loves the compact kitchen and the ease of picking up the living area. I love the ease of transporting and parking the smaller size trailer.

One cardinal rule to living in a small trailer is that clutter is just not allowed. Everything must have a place and is usually put back after use.

Downsizing from a three bedroom house to the trailer was a difficult experience but we have survived the cut with a minimum of trauma, I believe. What most of the people who take up full time living in a rv find out is all the possessions that they thought they could not part with turn out to be mostly just stuff. However, no amount of advice from me or anybody else will make your downsizing problem any easier to do. As the shoe company says, "Just do it".

Full Time RV Living Advantages

In addition to allowing you to have fun, a recreational vehicle can help you with living arrangements. If you would like to sell your home and just travel around the country, a recreational vehicle can allow you to do so. Also, if you are planning on remodeling your home or building a new home, you may want to think about using your recreational vehicle, if you buy one, to give you a temporary living space. In this aspect, owning a recreational vehicle can save you money. If you didn't have a home to live in, even for a short period of time, there is a good chance that you and your family would need to stay at and pay for a hotel. A recreational vehicle can save you from having to do so.

In short, owning a recreational vehicle gives you freedom. When you own a recreational vehicle, you can literally do just about whatever you want, like go traveling or go camping, often at the drop of a hat. If you regularly keep your recreational vehicle, should you buy one, stocked with supplies, like clothes, bedding, and some nonperishable foods, you can, literally, take off and go, whenever you have free time. This is something that no other automobile really allows you to do.

If you would like to buy a recreational vehicle, you will need to find a place to make your purchase from. For a large selection of new and used recreational vehicles, you may want to think about stopping by some of your local recreational vehicle dealerships.

Industrial strength velcro is a lifesaver...

Tying to hang cherished pictures on the walls of an rv is a difficult problem when you consider that the wall will be shaking and vibrating as it travels across the country.

One of the special items that Shirley wanted to mount on the wall in the "dining" area was a couple of Mother's day plates. These plates are dated and have adorable Disney characters on them and were a gift from children. The usual method of using a plate hanger just didn't work. I found this out the hard way after the first "shake down" road trip. One of the plates had crashed to the floor and broken beyond repair. This was not a good thing.

I purchased a 5 foot roll of 2 inch wide industrial velcro at the local big box store. This is the adhesive backed version with very aggressive hook and loop construction. I placed a strip of the velcro on the back of the plates and pressed the adhesive side to the wall. It works great with no more broken plates after several thousand miles of towing.

We went on to use the velcro to mount virtually every thing we have on the walls. All the framed photos, a couple of clocks, a very nice stained glass trout picture, and other cherished mementos.

The velcro mounting has not failed to hold anything we want to put up. Yet, the item can be removed and the adhesive does not seem to seriously damage the surface of the wall.

Full Time RV Living And Little Closets

We made space out of the corner...

One of the biggest problems in living in a small rv full time is the lack of closet space.

We don't actually have to have a lot of clothes. When you think about it, we don't need to get dressed up and go out and brave the elements to mush to a job. In fact, one of my main goals in living in an rv is to always strive to live where I can wear a tee shirt and shorts. So far, this has worked out quite well as we follow the warmth south in the fall and don't come back north until late spring.

Even with this abreviated wardrobe, we still had a severe shortage of available closet space in this little rv we have chosen for our full time home. In fact, there is only a half length closet and a "hall" closet by the door. This is one of the drawbacks in choosing an rv for full time living that was really only meant for use on vacations and weekends.

After a bit of thought, Shirley came up with a brilliant idea. She purchased some hanging cloth shelves from the local big box mart. These I suspended from a couple of metal towel racks mounted to the ceiling of the bedroom. Each corner now has a set of shelves for the shirts and pants that we use daily. On one side we added a smaller unit for shoes.

These units will hold a lot of tee shirts and pants if the clothing is folded or rolled tightly. Very little of the clothes are ejected while traveling and they are readily at hand for daily use.
