Buying your baby's pram - A guide

Ranked #5,274 in Parenting & Kids, #175,298 overall

The greatest challenge you will encounter when preparing for the arrival of your baby is buying THE pram, because you cannot just buy any old thing. This is the vehicle for the most important person in your life. The most beautiful little baby that will ever see the light of day! So, to make life easier for you I wrote down some things to think about when making the crucial purchase!

Where do you live?

Maybe you live in the country, in the city or in the suburbs? Do you get around by car, by public transport or do you have everything within a walking range? These are things to consider since it will shape your choice of pram.

If you use your car a lot then the pram needs to be able to fold and unfold easily. The wheels need to be removable. Basically the pram should be made of three components: the carriage, the seat and the wheels. The fewer components the less hustle.

If you live in the city or the suburbs and use public transport then the pram shouldn't be too large to fit the bus or metro entrances. Neither too heavy in case you need to carry the pram up some flights of stairs.

If you are lucky to have shops and supermarkets within walking distance your pram should be able to carry a load of shopping bags and have accessories that go with it like a basket or a net.

What is your lifestyle?

Are you an active parent, doing sports like jogging or roller blading? Do you like to take long walks in the park or in the woods? Do your interests include going to museums or exhibitions? No, matter what activity you are into; there is certainly no reason to stop doing it just because you are a fresh mummy or daddy. The market is full of prams specially designed for active parents!

Is the pram easy to use?

As I have mentioned before, the pram should be easy to fold not only to fit your car but also when you are not using it and want to store it away. It should be light because you will certainly find yourself in situations where you will have to lift the pram. The upholstery of the basinette should be easy to take off and be washable in warm water. Check if the wheels are inflatable or not. If they are inflatable, make sure that the pump comes with the pram. Also make sure that the pram has a adequate breaking system!

Important notice!

Your baby will be lying down until the age of 6 months. The most practical thing to do is to buy a pram that you can change into a stroller. One very important thing is to verify if the stroller can be turned towards you as well as from you. The market with strollers that have this function is limited but it is worth while keeping your eye out for them. Scientist mean that babies are submitted to a great deal of stress when facing the "traffic". Imagine yourself sitting on street level and having a stream of people, animals and noise constantly coming towards you. This is too difficult for a baby to handle and instead of sorting all these sensations it is experiencing as an adult can do, it becomes stressed. Your baby needs to see only one person and that is you. When your baby is a bit older about 10-12 months you can turn the stroller away from you for a while because babies are naturally curious at this age and want to see what's out there.

Is the price reasonable?

The pram is a bit chunk of the baby stuff budget and not everybody have the finances to buy a new one. A good idea is to go visit e-bay to get great deals. Prams are usually just used for one year and then parents switch to strollers (if they don't get the combo pram/stroller). However, make sure that you see the pram before you buy it so you can check that it is fully functional and safe for your baby. In some cases the vendor might have the receipt and the warranty is still valid.

If you don't want to buy a second-hand pram then try to haggle. I know, it's not something you usually do, you might feel uncomfortable and you certainly don't want to give the impression that you cannot afford a pram for your baby. Forget it! You are a consumer and you have the right to get a good deal. Why pay more when you can pay less? Usually the seller has nothing against it. Don't forget that he wants to make a sale. Begin with the price you are ready to pay and give an offer below that and meet the seller in the middle. You will see that you'll leave the store with the pram at a reduced price and even some accessories thrown in!

What colour to chose?

Choosing a colour isn't easy but a good choice is always to go classical, either in blue or red tones. That doesn't mean you are boring just that you think ahead. When you no longer have the use for it, it will certainly be easier to sell a pram with a classical colour than with a fashionable bright orange or pecan green. Please try to avoid black. I know it goes with everything in your wardrobe, but it's a sad colour and a baby should be surrounded with gentle, comforting and happy colours!

If you want to make a statement do so with the way you dress and not with the pram!

What kind of accessories come with it?

Maximize! Accessorize!

A well equipped pram should have a shopping basket (to at least fit a diaper bag), parasol, rain cover, net carry bag to fix on the handle and a sleeping bag.

Safety and Comfort!

Safety for you and your baby is very important especially when taking a walk in the evening or when it's cloudy. Many strollers have reflectors or reflective fabric, this is an very important safety feature. If you buy a pram or a stroller that doesn't have one, wear light-colored or reflective clothing so you can be seen. Another solution is to attach children reflectors on the pram.

Don't forget that you should feel comfortable when pushing your pram, so check the height of the handle and if it is possible to set into different positions.

The end. It's just the beginning

When you finally find yourself at home with your baby and ready to go out for that first walk in the park there is noting more wonderful than to lay your baby down in the pram. Making sure that it is not too cold or too warm. That it is well protected from the sun rays and the breeze. Then to step outside, looking right and left and above and thanking God for this wonderful gift! Enjoy this precious time with your child. It passes so quickly too quickly.

    Hi,
Customer Service. Many people commented on the excellent customer service they received from Uppababy. There were many stories of people finding the company very helpful and easy to work with if problems arose with the stroller. This, in our opinion, is really important especially when considering the investment one makes in a stroller these days.
