For those in the know What Katie Did originally started online selling vintage stockings and hosiery - with of course a specialism in fully fashioned and seamed stockings.

Since this time they have expanded into lingerie and are and now manufacture the biggest range of faux vintage lingerie, hosiery and corsets in the UK today. You can purchase online, by mail order, from their London boutique and from stockists worldwide.

The great thing about them is their designs are not simply inspired by the 40s and 50s but actually made using vintage patterns adapted for women of today. Thats right as far as possible they stick to using fabrics and manufacturing methods which were available at that time.

This is heaven to my eyes and ears! Their site is great and has a fantastic range of hosiery from fully fashioned in french (point) heel, cuban heel, havana heel and the more recent innovation of the Manhattan Heel.

They offer a range of sizes and colours and most importantly for me they offer full contrast fully fashioned stockings - which if I am honest not many places do these days.

In the faux vintage hosiery range they offer a range of seamed stockings and hold ups (thigh highs) and also offer a range of seamed tights (pantyhose) in fishnet and tulle (micronet).

So girls couple these with some faux vintage lingerie like a lovely six strap suspender belt and you will feel a million dollars and turn a lot of heads!

In the next week or so I will be making a trip over to London and will be taking a visit to their store so will provide a further update on this then - I am hoping to pick up some full contrast stockings!

Is it me or does it SEAM to be that seamed hosiery is back in fashion? or even just becoming accepted leg attire?

On tv and in the media more presenters and 'celebs' are seen wearing them - in the UK Sharon Marshall is a regular wearer of seamed stockings, Carol Vorderman has been known to wear them and has been pictured at events wearing them.

The latest series of Strictly Come Dancing on the BBC sees a lot of the celebs wearing seamed fishnets - Kelly Brook and Kate Garroway amongst them, and even Danni Minogue was seen to be wearing them on an episode of the X Factor.

Now OK the chances of all of these being stockings (other than Sharon Marshall) are remote - but thats not the point it is an encouraging development.

In recent months whilst on business around the UK I have had numerous sightings of seams - both fishnets and sheer and it is awesome.

As I have previously said there is nothing better than a nice shapely leg with a ruler straight seam running up the back of it! - that is not being sexist at all - to me they are the most powerful item of clothing a woman can wear - nothing states utter confidence like seams - simple as that.

So ladies please, please, please keep flying the flag for seams, at the risk of alienating myself it doe snot matter whether they are tights or stockings (preferably stockings though!!!)

The very beautiful Rowan Pelling has written a great article in the Telegraph in the last week.

For those who don't know - Rowan Pelling is a confirmed and proud wearer of stockings - most usually seams.

Since this article, she has also appeared on the UK chat show Richard & Judy, being interviewed for a feature on the demise of stockings and towards the end of the interview - proudly announced she was wearing red seamed stockings - when requested by Richard to turn round and show them - she did just that.

Unfortunately the camera never came close enough for us to see the seams!

Mytights are a UK based online retailer offering a great range of hosiery - but quite clearly in this case we are focussing on their great range of stockings and hold ups.

Mytights sell Fully fashioned stockings from GIO and Gerbe as well as more modern seamed stockings and hold ups from Pretty Polly, Jonathan Aston and Gerbe.

They have a great range and also some great prices - as well as offering non seamed stockings and hold ups and quite clearly as the name suggests tights and panythose.

Fully fashioned stockings are tailored to the shape of the leg, and are seamed up the back. The seam is an essential part of the stocking's construction, as it holds it together.

This is unlike modern so-called 'seamed' stockings, which are woven into a tube shape and which have a purely decorative 'seam'. Fully fashioned stockings are generally made from silky non-stretch, gossamer nylon fabric - so they cannot be one size.

In other words, take the seam out of a fully-fashioned stocking and it will be un-wearable but a modern stocking can still be worn.

There are a number of different 'heel' designs available:

Classic 'Point' Heel - The Aristoc Harmony Point was based on this and in more recent times Gio, Eleganti and Cervin have followed this heel design

Cuban Heel - Squared design to the heel - often fairly slim up the back of the leg

Havana Heel - Similar to the cuban heel but much broader and squater

Manhattan Heel - Newish heel design, Manhattan is similar to a Cuban heel but with slightly pointed head.

On top of this, modern day fully fashioned stockings are available in a number of colours and now with contrast seams and also contrast welts (where the heel design, seam and welt is black or a darker colour)

I have to say my favourite fully fashioned nylons have to be nude / champagne or bronze contrast welt with a cuban heel! - not that I am being picky of course!!!!

RHT stands for Reinforced Heel & Toe - I dont know the exact time they became popular but along with fullyfashioned stockings they epitomise the vintage fashion.

As with fully fashioned stockings they are generally made from 100% non stretch nylon without any lycra in the yarn and are available in a variety of yarns. The image shows an example of RHT stockings.

RHT stockings have made a comeback in recent years with many online retailers including Stockings HQ and Secrets In Lace selling brands from Cervin, GIO and Gerbe - as well as more recent incarnations from modern hosiery manufacturers.
