Fun Games For The Whole Family

This lens is about fun family games. First up a family favorite of ours, Apples to Apples.

Apples to Apples is a fun party game which involves humor and strategy. It's a game which involves the ability to make comparisons and analogies. Listed as being for ages 12 and over, I personally feel the game is better for older teens and adults.

Again, the game states that it is for 4 or more players, and we have found, the more players, the more fun! All players get red cards, which are then compared to the green card the judge turns over. The players put the card they think either best matches the green card, or is the opposite ( or maybe just the funniest) and the "judge" decides which person's card is the best match for whatever reason.

Apples To Apples can make for a good deal of funny conversion and is educational to boot!

Checkers

American checkers is a game played on an 8 X 8 square board. Pieces used to play on the board are usually red and white, round plastic pieces which can be moved forward , backward and diagonally. Pieces can be moved one space, or more than one space when one player is "jumping" another players piece and then taking it as their own.

When one player makes it all the way to the furthest row on the opposite side of the board, they ask their opponent to "king me."
A player wins when all of the opponents pieces are captured, or when the opponent has no plays left.

Connect 4 is a fun 2 player strategy game where players take turns dropping colored discs into a grid. The object of the game is to connect 4 discs in a row either vertically, horizontally or diagonally before your opponent does so.

Uno

Uno is a card game usually special color coded cards. Each player is dealt 7 cards and 1 card is turned up from the rest of the deck in the center of the game. Each player in turn then plays a card of either the color or number which is on the deck card. If a player does not have the right color or a matching number, they must then draw a card.

Some cards in the deck are "pass" or draw 2 or "wild". The player who has these cards must do as the cards say. As play continues, a player who is down to their last card must say "uno" warning others that they may go out the next round. A player wins when all of their cards are gone.

ParcheesiĀ® Game by Milton Bradley

Amazon Price: $18.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

Parcheesi is an American game based on the Indian game Pachisi, a Cross and Circle game. The game is played with dice and the object is to move your pawn pieces into an opponents home space before any one else does. To start the game and come out of your own home, the player must roll a five. Once out a player can move 14 on a roll of doubles, but will have a pawn sent back home to start again should they roll 3 doubles in a row ( the pawn closest to an opponents home must be sent home). A player wins the game when all of its pawns are in its opponents home, as task which requires an exact throw of the dice in order to get the exact number needed to move into the home.

Which of these games is your favorite?

Sorry is a board game similar to Parcheesi where the players move along a board but towards their own home space. The pawns are moved in this game using instructions on cards. Players can be sent back to home ( hence using the word Sorry) when another player lands on their occupied space or with a Sorry card.
