"Let's Throw a Baby Shower!"

Welcome to my lens on baby showers. Or at least my experience with the responsibility (with another new Grandma...) of having to throw a baby shower.

My niece gave birth to a healthy baby girl on September 12th. What was supposed to be just a quick visit to the labor and delivery ward, turned into an all-night exorcism! The poor girl was screaming until the epidural and her mother (my sister-in-law) was a frantic mess. They both needed me there and I was more than glad to help out. Which is how I was appointed "The Baby Shower Planner" and baby shower hostess.

There was a creative side of me that I never knew existed. My mother was the arts and crafts nut in my family. When I was younger, I didn't feel the need to express my creativity through crafts. Not even during the holidays. Football and basketball were more fun for me being the oldest and the only sister to three little brothers.

During birthdays and holidays, I left the creativity in the kitchen to my mother, which I regret now. I'm not completely lost though, Mom left a box of recipes and craft supplies to keep me busy with my child and now, my new granddaughter. Sit back and enjoy my take on parties. You may have almost as much fun as I did!

My Baby Sock Roses

These are the little rosettes up close. I made a big loop on one end of the wire in the shape of a lollipop so when I finished taping the flower onto the wire, I would smash the wire inside flat to hold the sock in place. Be sure to tape off the twisted part of the wire. You don't want the wire to snag the socks. I used the whole wire and didn't have to cut them. Just coil the remainder around your index finger and release to make a curly vine. I then used the leftover leaves from the pens and voila! Try them! They're fun to make!

Flower Pen

I used a bead reamer to drill the holes through the tops of the pens. Although, hard on the hands after a few, I found this to be the easiest. I thought the pens looked alot better with the flower inserted into the inside of the pen, rather than taped to the side of the pen. I never knew what a bead reamer was, or what it was used for. One of Mom's tools for beadwork. Live and learn, I guess...

My Flower Pens

I got a couple of batches of various flowers at a dollar store, followed the video and produced a beautiful arrangement from cheap ballpoint pens that no one would steal at work. They would all run off with the good pens. Squirt them with a shot of rose-scented perfume and you're good to go! Boy! Am I glad I saved the pens!

Baby Booty mint/nut cups...

This is my take on the adorable little booties. I got a bag of 52 plastic cups. The guest list was about 40 people but I made extra just in case. I was glad I got cups you can see through because I was able to make a template for cutting, folding and punching holes. As you can imagine... I went to town!

Lacing and tying the ribbon was a little tricky. Use the first one as a guide in determining the length needed. Cut the tips at a deep angle to thread through the punched holes. You need to weigh down the cup when doing this because they're so light, they won't hold still to tie a good knot. I managed to weigh them down with a heavy chip clip that had a magnet in the back. After lacing, clip the edge of the cup opposite the lacing or face of the cup and you should be able to tie it properly. Another good tip is to use a curling ribbon instead of a fabric ribbon. Fabric ribbon will fray easily at the tips and after tying the curling ribbon, you can adjust your loops and smash down the ribbon to keep in place. Something I had to learn the hard way. Curling ribbon is far more inexpensive as well. Instead of buying a small ribbon, I got smart and got a wide roll of ribbon for 77 cents and tore it into four strips. That's the small ribbon times four for the price of one!

Everyone loved them and I was the hit of the show. Coming from someone who isn't crafty, YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

My Diaper Cake

This was the finished product. It's a little overdone, but I'm a grandmother for the first time, so I'm allowed. This was also my first attempt. The whole thing is held together with elastic and ribbon. The instructional videos I watched used tape, glue, and hot glue guns to hold them together. I was afraid it would get messy and baby wouldn't be able to use the diapers, so I used elastic hair bands and ribbon.

To keep the rectangular form of the castle, I cut the sides off of water bottle cartons down to size and placed it inside the outer row of the diapers. I had to wrestle with trying to keep the rectangle on both layers. Elastic just wants to put everything in a circle. For the towers, I carefully inserted wooden dowels to hold them into place.

My niece loved it. So did the little boys at the shower because they got their little cars out and started playing around it! This took two packages of size 1 diapers and of course, was real fun to make. I had a blast.

The little purple and turquoise rosettes were the result of the first video. I wrapped them with tissue paper so as not to get the adhesive from the floral tape onto the socks. They turned out cute!

A Favorite Game of Mine

I think every hostess and/or grandmother should do this...

As I was casually perusing the internet for baby shower ideas, I stumbled upon one in particular. The search results showed many different names to call this "game", so I will settle on "Letters to Baby". Although, "Baby Snail Mail" sounds much more cuter. There's an idea !!!

Everyone is given a sheet of stationary paper and is given the opportunity to draw from "the hat". I used a fish bowl... Potatoes, PotOtoes... Depending upon the number of attendees, numbers are drawn from the hat so that number is the assigned "age" of the baby's birthday. The person is asked to write a letter to the baby when the baby turns "the age" the person has drawn.

Again, there were several different versions of what each person had to write. From real general information to specifics such as "Good Advice", What NOT to do...", "Things to think about", "Make Mama or Grandma Proud". The one I liked in particular was, "When I was YOUR age..."

The idea is to pass on helpful advice to the child in the future from an "experienced, wiser" person and is to be opened by the child every year on their birthday.

In preparation for this activity, I pulled out a photo box I wasn't using. Labeled it. I purchased some baby themed computer paper and some colored envelopes. With my word processor, I created a form. Complete with "Happy ____ Birthday! Today is January 1st of 20__ and we are celebrating your arrival into the world!" for the header.

"You are growing faster than Momma and Grandma would like. With each passing year, you are growing into a little person that's learning from everything around you. Here is some helpful advice you are going to need:" Followed by the footer that leaves a signature line, a line for the person's relationship to baby, and the date the letter was written.

I presented this "game" at the beginning of the shower to give the guests plenty of time to think about what they wanted to say. My niece loved it and her mom cried. Throughout the activities, I took pictures of the guests when they were "handling" Baby (holding, feeding, burping, changing, etc...). Toward the end of the shower, I made sure the letters were collected for Mom. Later, I made two copies of the photos and put one with the letters and sent the other with the Thank You notes. I hadn't thought about it at the time, but I should have bought some photo frame Thank You cards. I also should have written the photo subjects, the event and the date the photo was taken on the back of the photos as well 'cause years later, everyone has a problem identifying the baby, let alone whose baby it is.
Live and learn... I guess...

To sum it up, that "event" made the shower that much more special. I'm hoping this will become a "tradition" in your growing family as well. I had fun doing this for my niece and she was very grateful. It remains to be seen if little Samera Rose will heed those words of wisdom...

Pre-Halloween Treat Bags

The new father's side of the family brought some treat bags for the children that came to the baby shower. They called them "Pre-Halloween Treat Bags". I'm glad they included the kids in the shower. I was only thinking about the adults...

Balloon Art for your Baby Shower

This video isn't in English but don't let that bother you. Focus on the balloon art. I gave these balloons a try and after a few failed attempts, finally got the hang of it and used them at the baby shower. I didn't find the flowery looking ones in time, so I left those off. Instead, I used some long balloons and tied them around. I had to get the clear ones online. They didn't have any in the stores where I live. They were more entertaining to the children that showed up. I had fun making them.
