What is Functional Training?

Functional training is one of the hottest buzz words in the fitness industry today; however, there is still many misconceptions as to what functional training really is. Functional training can be described as an exercise or series of exercises involving proprioceptive movements that incorporate some level of instability. Most functional training exercises involve little to no machine assistance therefore strength is exerted under unstable conditions and body weight is managed in all planes of movement. Functional training exercises often involve acceleration and deceleration through multiple planes of movement incorporating multiple joints and muscle groups.

The functional training equipment varies depending on the gym you go to however there is some pieces of equipment that are considered standard for functional training workouts. Suspension training such as the FTX or the STX , stability balls/ medicine balls, dumbbells/ kettle-bells, and resistance bands are just a few of the many pieces of functional training equipment that trainers are using today.

Many people are under the impression that functional training is only for athletes; however, this is a very big public misconception due to lack of education on the topic. Functional training is great for everyday people as well as high level athletes because many of the movements are very similar to everyday life activities. Regular people and fitness enthusiasts should not shy away from functional training just because they are not a high level athlete. Functional training can help with posture, balance, stamina, develop lean muscle mass, boost your metabolism, prevent injury and countless other benefits that everyone can use not just professional athletes.

Functional Training Exercise of the Week #1

Stability Ball Leg Curls

The hamstrings are one of the most under trained muscle groups for sure. The stability ball leg curls is one of the easiest ways to blast your hamstring while simultaneously engaging your Low Back your Glutes and your Quads. This exercise also engages your core and requires extreme stabilization. These types of proprioceptive, multi-muscle group movements that engage your stabilizer muscles should be the foundation of your functional training workouts.

Beginner Tips:
1) Try having someone hold the ball for you, or wedging the ball up against something, at first in order to learn the move with less core stabilization involved.

2) Never Let your hips sink. When you extend your legs try to keep your body in a straight line.

3) To make this more advanced try super setting this with another total body movement.

Medicine Ball Seal Sit Ups

This is a great movement for shredding your core and you can do it even if you don't have a medicine ball. You can really use anything here to add resistance dumbbells work great as well. Remember its important not to use your arms to create momentum really isolate your core.

    Very informative lens (and lenses). Funny, I'm now in my late forties, have a family, and no longer go to a gym or work out as I did in my younger days. Still, we have a horse property in the mountains west of Boulder, CO and with cutting and splitting wood, hauling hay bales, mucking stalls, etc., I seem to be getting a good amount of Functional Training through these chores. Seems like with every passing decade we are less reliant on the various fitness machines (what ever happened to the Nautilus craze) and are returning to the basics. We're not to the point where we're adopting the methods of the Roman Gladiators, but who knows, maybe some day. Thanks again for a great lens.

    Thanks for the comment Jack. Sounds like you're definitely getting a good workout in. I am glad that this functional training concept has been catching on because I hate all the trendy machines people work on at the gym. Were trying to bring back gladiator training with a modern twist.
