Fun crafts for kids, like this Super Star Heart project, can be a great way to keep busy on a rainy day, when it is too hot or cold to enjoy the outdoors, or just about any time. This craft project can be made fun for a boy or a girl by changing paint colors, basic wooden shape, using pre-made lettering for younger kids and will require little assistance from adults for kids over 8.
When creating this kids craft, you will want to cover the work area with butcher paper or newspaper and have each child involved wear an old shirt reserved for painting projects. While the paint used is washable, it might not all come out of clothing, especially bright colors.
What You Will Need:o A wooden shape purchased from the craft store which has a hanger or hole for hanging on the back of the shape. For girls, a heart is popular. Boys may prefer a truck. Either gender will like a sunburst, a star, or a moon. Choose a simple shade that can be painted a single color while still giving the image meaning.
o Tempera paint in desired colors. For the Super Star Heart project, we used red and white. If you have a set of tempera colors, let the kids choose their own colors for background and lettering.
o Sponge paint brushes, one for each background color to be used.
o Artist brush or marker for lettering. Optionally, younger kids will have more fun if you purchase pre-made letters of wood or foam and place them in the correct order for them. If the letters are wood, allow the kids to paint them before placing them in the order to make the word or words they have chosen. If using pre-made letters, you will also need craft glue to apply letters to case.
o Cups of water to prevent paint from drying in sponges until clean up time.
Instructions:o Cover work surface well for easy clean up. Place paint jars, cups of water, and paint sponge brushes so that you have one for each color to be used.
o Place wooden shape on table covering and completely cover the entire front surface with paint. Cover the sides that will be exposed after hanging. Do not drop globs of paint onto shape or it may warp.
o Place painted wooden shapes aside to dry completely. Tempura paint dries rapidly if placed in a sunny or warm location.
o If wooden letters are to be used, paint these in a contrasting color and set aside to dry.
o After base shape has dried, allow kids to finish this fun craft by painting a word in a contrasting color with an artist brush or marker. For this project example, we used the words Super Star.
o If painted or foam pre-made letters were selected, arrange these and glue onto the base shape so the kids can finish their fun project.
o After this fun craft project for kids has completely dried, it is ready to be hung on a bedroom wall or door.
