Is "Funnest" Really A Word?

Ranked #675 in Culture & Society, #17,267 overall

If This Ain't The Funnest Thing I've Written....

....well, then I'm a dork.

But I just can't wrap my head around it. Funnest? No English teacher I ever had approved of that one. (Or its cousin, funner, for that matter.) The red pen woulda come out fightin' mad.

Am I wrong, though? Some folks vehemently disagree with me, so I've decided to present this topic for some friendly dueling.

Yeah, you wanna fight about it? Bring it on, oh most funnest ones!

Now, About Funnest: Wiktionary Says....

And I quote....

Is Funnest Really a Word?

"Funnest is a regular superlative of the adjective fun. However, the use of fun as an adjective is itself still often seen as informal or casual and to be avoided in formal writing, and this would apply equally to the superlative form.

Merriam-Webster, however, gives fun as an adjective without comment, and states that funner and funnest are 'sometimes' used. Because of the remaining stigma, most fun may be preferred in formal writing."

Thank you, SherryHolderHunt, for bringing this Wiktionary entry to my attention.

And, ugh, ack! Blehk! Even Merriam-Webster Dictionary says:

Main Entry: fun
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): sometimes fun·ner; sometimes fun·nest
Date: circa 1846

Noooooo! Not them too!

BUT Dictionary.com Says.....

Is Funnest Really a Word?

"No results found for funnest:
Did you mean fun nest (in dictionary) or Fingest (in reference)?"

Ha!

And check out World Wide Words:

"What we're seeing here is language evolution in action. So the straightforward answer to your question is: yes, you can use these forms, and people are doing so increasingly often.

But if your question was really asking whether it is acceptable to use them in all circumstances, then I have to say firmly that, no, it isn't, not yet anyway. They are definitely informal and they should still be avoided when speaking or writing standard or formal English."

You did note the "should still be avoided" part, right? Okay, good.

No, it ain't! Not never! (That is, no.)

mogulmedia says:

No, simples!

ES says:

no, I don't believe you should use this word as an adjective, it is a noun, this also goes along with people using double superlatives. (most brightest, most cutest, etc.) it's either cutest, or most cute, not both, just don't do it, it makes you sound like an idiot.

paydayadvanceuk says:

I'm not a grammarian, but I think it's not a word? I think?

rtabel says:

r u kidding?

gregoryolney says:

No - and "fun" is not an adjective but a noun !

AddaptAbilities says:

I hate the word "funnest", and think it shouldn't be used simply because it's annoying. On the other hand, I'm much more of a descriptivist than a prescriptivist where language is concerned, so I have to admit it's a "real" word in that it's widely understood. But THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT OK!

KokoTravel says:

Seems that English as a first language needs to re-enter the classrooms!

yourgoldenfuture says:

no it isn´t...sounds funny though

Mary114 says:

It not so, funniest ?orrectly

Marti says:

funnest is NOT a word but:
funniest, ARE

MisterJeremy says:

Depends on the situation. Formal speaking or writing--no. Casual conversation--why not?

GospelSmith says:

Maybe later, as the American public continues to dumb down the English Language. "Fun" is not yet an adective in standard English.

redflea13 says:

No but it is fun to use just to be funny.

Lenswork says:

Just because some words become acceptable in some circles ? even some official places such as dictionaries (the Oxford ain't perfect [yes, I know I used ain't, get over it] :-) ? doesn't make it correct are acceptable by the larger audience. When it comes to writing, acceptable often means lazy... too lazy to know, to lazy to care, to lazy to know the rules and when you can break them.

resabi says:

Whether or not it's technically acceptable to use "funner" or "funnest," my opinion of a person who uses it tends to decrease. When I hear it used, my reaction is annoyance and disdain.

Peregrina says:

It might technically be becoming a word, but it grates on my ear like fingernails on a blackboard.

BillyBobJoe says:

No. Just no..if you're talking to your friends, do you say, "That was the funnest ride ever?" Of course not, you'd look like an imbecile.

Jack2205 says:

Funnest is a childish word. It's not proper English.

Prashant says:

NONONO!!!! this is not a word lolz! this is an alien thing!

Jen says:

Bottom line, I would use the word "funnest" as a sort of "slang" word in my everyday language with friends, but knowing that it is not technically grammatically correct and that I should never use it in a term paper, thesis, or job interview because it makes me sound less educated.

Yup! Mostist definitely 'tis a woid!

SECRET says:

Yes! If "ain't" is a word that is most commonly used by sophisticated people (that's what it says in the dictionary!) then surely "funnest" is a word. At first I thought it wasn't, but then I remembered me looking up "ain't" when my friend said it, so yeah, funnest is a word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debra says:

YES! And my eight year old son agrees! He is the one ho posed the question, hence your site in my search results. He finished a game on our new Kinect and said that Kinect Adventures is the "funnest Kinect game we have." Sounded good to me.

luvmyludwig says:

it's a word because I say so...southern english is still english! :)

Trent says:

Yes. Legitimate word. At least that how I personally interpret the fact that official sources have deemed it a word. Oxford dictionary and Merriam-Webster are far more authoritative than Dictionary.com which is owned by Lexico Publishing Group, and is not an authority on the English language.

(though, now even Dictionary.com includes it in their database.)

colin says:

ye i use it all the time!!

sujaysen says:

As per the dictionary it is legitimate word.

MarkFashionista says:

I just don't understand what is all the fuss about it. Who cares, it is fun to say it!

Cumberland says:

Just because a word isn't in the dictionary is no reason to disqualify it from participating in our language. I make up lots of words and many of them are better than those accepted by the "Linguist Elite". So there!

JeremiahStanghini says:

It's a word. Period.

awesomeamber says:

of course it is!!!!!!

Evan says:

I just read that "Bromance" and "Hater" are now officially accepted words in the Oxford Dictionary. In lieu of that, funnest seems reasonalbe.

RebeccaE says:

gee, okay, well I say it is because why not? It seems cool enough

The_Health_Lady says:

Sure funnest is a word -if you can't have fun with words what's the sense in sending the funnest emails to your friends?

JaguarJulie says:

Yes funnest is a word and getting to know you has been the FUNNEST thingie.

$n@y says:

I think if you were writing a formal paper, than you should never use the word funnest, but if you were saying.... something like "that was the funnest concert ever" i think that would make more sense than saying, "that was the most fun concert"

treehugger2012 says:

People have benn sayin it for eva my grammar is definetly bad but funnest is a word. it's in the dictonary isn it

Pukeko says:

It's the funnest word I know!

Marelisa says:

What a coincidence visiting your lensmaster page and seeing this lens! A couple of days ago I was talking to my sister and I used the word "funner". She immediately asked me if that was a proper word and so I checked online when I got home. I found that through usage the word "funner" has been accepted into the English language.

Eclectic_Muse says:

Well, it is around here. Sure we all learn the proper terms, but it's human nature to change things up a bit. So, I exercise my right to tell you: This is the Funnest lens ever!

CleanerLife says:

Sure is! What I always hated about English class was how it tends to get in the way of reading! I love to read, but hate to learn about usage! I'm not saying it's useless, but I grew up speaking the language, by the time I reached High School, I didn't care about usage anymore - they should have forced me to learn some other languages instead!
