Fawlty Towers

This to me has to be an all time favorite when it comes to British comedy. Unfortunately there only ever made 12 episodes of them.

Picture on the right comes from CC flickr

This most hilarious comedy was created by funny man John Cleese and Cooney Booth. It is about a husband and wife running a hotel. Basil Fawlty ( John Cleese) is the rudest and obnoxious hotel owner there is. Not only argues with wife Sybil ( Prunellia Scales ) but also with Manuel the spanish waiter who struggles with basic english( Andrew Sachs) and Polly the house maid( Connie Booth ).

If you watch closely you will notice that the sign at start of the show is misspelled every time in a different way.

Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection Remastereda>

Fawlty Towers was created in 1975 and a second series was produced in 1979 which became the last series. It has become a classic and it is loved by many.

Mr Bean

This is running a close 2nd to me.

Mr. Bean first appeared on TV on the 1st of January 1990. Like Faulty Towers not many episodes were produced in fact only 14 were made. These were shown between 1990 and the end of 1995.

Shortly after that one more episode was made ("Hair by Mr. Bean of London"), as a video exclusive released on 15 November 1995.

Rowan Atkinson developed the MR Bean character in his university time and became a widely love series watched by millions of people.

The Characters:

Mr. Bean, played by Rowan Atkinson, is a kid in a grown up body and with not too much trouble gets into plenty of it. The thing that is most fascinating is the fact that there is rarely a word spoken and yet the expressions on Mr. Beans face and the situations he finds himself in are hilarious.

Teddy played by a teddy bear and is Mr. Beans best friend. He treats the teddy like it was alive and this makes for some funny moments during the show.

Mr. Bean's car a British Leyland Mini 1000, is used in a number of episodes to display Mr. Beans ingenuity in what can be done with a small car.

Irma Gobb is Mr. Beans girlfriend and treats her more like a friend then a girlfriend. It is quite funny to see Mr. Bean getting a little jealous in one episode.

2002 saw the first of 26 half-hour episodes of an animated series of Mr. Bean hour episodes. It was very much in line with the original Mr. Bean, but added a couple more characters to it.

Mrs. Wicket is Mr. Beans landlady and she hasn't got much time for anything or anybody except for her one eyed cat.

Scrapper the one eye cat hates Mr. Bean and try's to get home into trouble whenever it can. Come to think of it Scrapper hates all humans except Mrs. Wicket. She has the tin opener.

Three wheeler is there to be run of the road when ever possible.

Mr. Bean has his own facebook site with over 15 Million fans and over 15000 likes for that page.

There is also a Mr. Bean Website you can visit. The link is provided as:

Gimme Gimme Gimme

Possibly not so well known British comedy, but it was hilarious to watch. There were only 3 series made( 1999- 2001) and 2 specials of which one was the Millennium special: 1999 and the other Comic Relief special: 2001

This comedy evolves around 2 flat mates Linda and Tom. Both enjoy the company of men, which makes them a very funny odd couple.

Linda La Hughes played by Kathy Burke is a boorish, unattractive middle aged lady thinking that she is a stunner.

Tom Farrell played by James Dreyfus is a 30-year-old openly gay, wannabe (but bad) actor who has only had small roles on TV and on stage.

Must confess I'm not a big follower of British comedies other than the Office, but the few times I've seen Absolutely Fabulous I was definitely chuckling outloud.
