The Funniest Calvin-and-Hobbes Ever
Explore Calvin and Hobbes at their best - rare cartoons, funny pictures, videos, and decide for yourself what the funniest Calvin and Hobbes cartoon is and see what others think.
Calvin and Hobbes is my all-time favorite cartoon characters. Why? Because the series is imaginative, irreverent, and thought provoking. Calvin sees and does things we wished we would have had the courage to say or do. His imagination is legendary.
Seeing monsters under the bed or at every turn, then turning into a super hero to save the world, Calvin elicits everything from disbelief to chuckles and belly laughs to side-holding laughter.
Hobbes is always there to help keep him grounded. Along the way, great life lessons are learned by both although as Calvin would say when life lessons are all that happened that day, "What a boring day."
I'll include links to places to get more information on Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes. You'll also find places to buy cool Calvin And Hobbes books and other "stuff" for yourself or others.
Let's face it, choosing the funniest Calvin and Hobbes single cartoon would be impossible, but I hope to show you some of the best and where to get more so you can decide exactly what the funniest is to you.

From dailyinventionon Flickr Calvin In His Red Wagon
A Wonderful Theme In Watterson's Strip
Who can forget the trips Calvin and Hobbes made in the little red wagon. Makes one wonder just how many wagons a real kid would have gone through using it Calvin's way.
Just Who Is Calvin?
6 year old going on 40
Calvin is a 6-year old, who is intelligent, curious, creative and has a huge imagination. He sees monsters under the bed, turns into a super hero and talks philosophical about subjects that belies his age, with a vocabulary that most adults aspire to.Along with his alter-ego, Hobbes, a stuffed tiger, Calvin gets into more trouble than a room full of 6-year olds could. Whether he's at school tormenting Miss Wormwood, his teacher, or being tormented himself by Moe, his nemesis, he is always entertaining.
He is often selfish, as six-year-olds are wont to be, chews massive amounts of gum and wants all the new "hip" things. He is also impulsive, both in what he says and what he does. Watterson describes Calvin as easy to create because "there's not much of a filter between his brain and his mouth."
What I love about Calvin the most is his lack of restraint -- doing things that get him into trouble then watching him weasel his way out -- or trying to. In short, Calvin lives "in the moment".
Hobbes - A Boys Best Friend
A tiger is Calvin's buddy
Hobbes, who Calvin anthropomorphasizes but to everyone else is just a stuffed tiger is also his alter-ego, He's Calvin's mature conscience, keeping him in check -- as much as anyone can. He often puts into words the life's lessons Calvin learns from his misadventures.Watterson named Hobbes after Thomas Hobbes, a 17th-century philosopher, who has a dim view of human nature and this attitude is reflected in the comic strip over and over. I think that's why I like Hobbes so much. Although I never heard him say it, I'm sure he'd agree: it's times to thin the herd!
I love the panels of Hobbes lying in wait for Calvin and his pronouncements about tigers and his whole attitude and ideas. He may be a stuffed animals to other adults, but to me he is just what Calvin sees, a real live tiger.
Calvin's Mom And Dad
Calvin's parents are very patient
Calvin's Mom and Dad also known as Mom and Dad first appeared in November, 1985. Watterson never gave us their last name. We know that Dad was a patent attorney and his Mom, well, stayed at home. Of course she had her hands full with Calvin.
I love the way Watterson portrayed these 2 characters. How they stayed sane is beyond me. I keep seeing Calvin in the tub with toys half way up the ceiling and water spraying all over the floor as he raised an umbrella and his Mom saying, "I set the limit on the umbrella."
And the line, I believe I mentioned before, where Calvin walks up to his Father and says, "Dad, remember our car?" Although the comic strip is static, I still think I could see the horror in his Dad's eyes and I'm sure they bugged out. LOL

Great Calvin And Hobbes Stuff On eBay
Boys Rule. Girls Drool. (Especially Susie Derkins.)
Susie is Calvin's Reason For Hating Girls
Susie is one of my favorite characters. She was often the target of Calvin's water baloons but usually she never got wet. Calvin either broke the balloon or somehow his traps would backfire.
And, I loved it that Watterson shows Hobbes as smitten with Susie. I find that very endearing.
Miss Wormwood
Calvin's Teacher
Miss Wormwood, Calvin's teacher, has seen it all, and is ready to retire. I think she is tired of teaching, tired of kids and especially tired of trouble makers like Calvin. In fact, Calvin makes her wish she had gone into another profession or at least retired before he became her student.
Calvin's imagination, lack of interest, and lack of control all seem to take her to the brink. With Calvin antics, one wonders if the brink she's on is the brink of a nervous breakdown.
Through the cartoon series, you find out that she is a heavy smoker and drinker and takes lots of medication. One has to assume that Calvin is one of the biggest reason for these behaviors.
Having been to the principal's office more than once myself, I find that I side with Calvin. In my humble opinion, teachers and schools should allow more individual thought and be more engaging. I think that would keep Calvin more in line or at least "in the present" while in school. It would have helped me. LOL
Moe - Calvin's nemesis
Calvin's School Bully
Moe is every young boy's nightmare - the school bully. He is always pushing Calvin and Calvin really wants to change that. Watterson makes this character fun by describing him as the only 6-year old boy who shaves. He's not very smart, although Calvin calls him "street-wise", meaning "he knows where he lives."

Calvin's Transmogrifier
The Machine That Could Do Anything!

The Transmogrifier
In anyone else's eye, it's just be an ordinary cardboard box. But, to Calvin, it is a transmogrifier --a machine that can change something into something else. On the side, it's a "duplicator". Upright with the right setting, it is a "time machine".In the cartoon strip, the transmogrifier transforms Calvin into a tiger, dinosaur, elephant, monster or whatever he wants -- only his imagination limits him -- which, of course, means there are no limitations.
There's a knob drawn on the side of the box which Calvin turns to the setting he wants, adding new settings by scribbling them around the dial. There's also a button that he pushes to make the transmogrifier work. And, it works -- with a loud "ZAP" sound.
The transmogrifier theme was so popular that it leaked into popular culture. There was the Apple Macintosh paint program that had an operation that would randomly mix pixels, which was named transmogrify. And, in the Star Trek: 25th Anniversary video, a transmogrifier is found on the 2nd level.
The transmogrifier stands out in my mind because I always wished there was a way to teleport or go back in time. It ranks at the top of my favorite Calvin inventions.
G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS)
Calvin's Anti-Girl Club

Calvin hates girls, but in particular, he hates Susie Derkins. So he created G.R.O.S.S. a secret club that excludes all girls, especially Susie. (But that's redundant, isn't it?) Speaking of redundant, Calvin also considered the name: Get Rid Of Slimy girlS somewhat redundant since all girls are slimy in his opinion.
In the beginning, the club meetings were held in the family car or a cardboard box. Later, Calvin moves it to his treehouse.
Calvin and Hobbes are the only members so they claim several titles. The ones I like the most are, Calvin: Dictator-For-Life, and Hobbes: President and First Tiger. They have many "discussions" over the club charter and a secret code to get into the meetings.
Vote on the funniest cartoons in the G.R.O.S.S. series. If yours isn't listed, add it but don't forget to vote for it.
1
Hobbes won't drop down the rope to the treehouse until Calvin says the password. And the password is very long and is about the virtues of tigers.

Calvin Setting His Own Philosophy
Creating His Own Drummer
My favorite Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strips were the ones where he waxed philosophic. For example:Panel 1: Calvin - Some people are pragmatists, taking things as they come and making the bet of the choices available.
Panel 2: Calvin - Some people are idealists, standing for principle and refusing to compromise.
Panel 3: Calvin - And some people just act on any whim that enters their head.
Panel 4: Hobbes - I wonder which YOU are.
Calvin - I pragmatically turn my whims into principles.

My Favorite Dad Cartoon
Calvin was a rebel even at home. If you had a kid like Calvin, you'd have gray hair very early in life! Here's my favorite:Calvin: Here's the latest poll on your performance as Dad. Your approval rating is pretty low I'm afraid.
Dad: That's because there's not necessarily any connection between what's good and what's popular. I do what's right, not what gets approval.
Calvin: You'll never keep the job with THAT attitude.
Dad: If someone else offers to do it, let me know.
